86 books310 followersMarija Jurić Zagorka was a Croatian journalist, novelist and dramatist, the first female journalist and second in the list of most popular Croatian writers of all time (by the 2005 poll compiled by Vjesnik, a Zagreb daily newspaper). Many of her works have been adapted to film.
She was born in the village of Negovec near Vrbovec, to a well-standing family, which allowed her a good education, but in spite of her talent and many gifts, her parents decided to end her education early and, soon after leaving school, married her off to a man whom she barely knew, a Hungarian railway clerk 18 years her senior. The marriage ended abruptly with her escape from the house, first to Sremska Mitrovica and then to Zagreb, due to her husband's and mother-in-law's abuse.
It was in Zagreb that she began her career as a journalist, which was a highly unusual career for a woman in those days, and because of that, she was frowned upon, humiliated and prejudiced against her entire life. She was forced to write anonymously, under pseudonyms that hid her gender, and hide herself at work so nobody would notice there was a woman writing for (and later running) a newspaper. This didn't stop her from being politically involved, fighting against the Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia, and fighting for the rights of women, which caused her considerable problems in life, both professionally and privately.
Urged by Bishop Strossmayer, Zagorka began writing historic novels, usually set in 16th, 17th and 18th century Croatia. She instantly became popular amongst the people, who endearingly called her "The Fairy of Zagorje" (upon publishing Grička vještica) and "Queen of Croatians" (upon publishing Gordana: Kraljica Hrvata). The critics and her colleagues, however, constantly put her down, ridiculed her work, slurred her as a person and as a writer, and deliberately ignored her in literary magazines and almanacs. Still, she kept on writing and published her works as a part of her newspaper so they would be affordable to the general public, adapted her own and the works of August Šenoa for theater, ran two magazines "Ženski list" (1925- 1938) and "Hrvatica" (1938-1940) addressed to the female public, and with her young female colleagues formed the Society of Croatian Female Writers.
Upon the formation of Independent State of Croatia, the magazine "Hrvatica" was forcibly canceled and her entire estate is taken from her, leaving her without means to support herself. Desperate, Zagorka attempted suicide, but luckily survived. Living in Zagreb, she saw the end of WWII thanks to the financial help and care of her loyal public. Despite her age and weak health, she continued fighting for the rights of women, even though it earned her the ridicule and animosity of her male colleagues, who repeatedly called her "a madwoman" and "mannish old hag", until the day of her death.
None of her novels have been translated into English, but two are available in German: Grička vještica and Malleus maleficarum. 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress. The exact number of the novels she has written is unknown, but it is presumed that she wrote around 35, some of which are lost forever.

Kapetan Siniša mi postaje nepodnošljiv. U ovoj knjizi ga najmanje ima, ali mi ju je svojim ponašanjem upropastio. U ljubavi je zaboravio na povjerenje. Usijana glava... A i onaj Meško mi diže tlak. Nije mu dosta što si je zbog ljubomore skoro ubio ženu, sad pak s krivim pretpostavkama kvari drugima sreću. Ne znam kak ću izdržat još dvije knjige uz ovoliko muške gluposti.

U odnosu na prethodni naslov u serijalu, ova knjiga je ostavila puno bolji dojam, zbog većeg opsega i zamršenog zapleta, koji je počeo sa ''Suparnicom Marije Terezije''. Također, bilo mi je drago ponovno vidjeti Juricu Meška i Stanku (protagoniste prve knjige u serijalu), a ima i referenci koje ponovno vraćaju sve na početak serijala, zbog čega treba pažljivo pratiti radnju (priznajem da sam dosta likova već zaboravio i dosta prethodnih događaja se spomene niotkuda, iako je to više zbog mog namjernog neinformiranja o čemu se sve radi, kako si ne bih pokvario iznenađenje). Kao i prije, knjiga obiluje raznovrsnim sadržajima, bilo da su u sklopu povjesnih događaja, inspiriranih ili baziranih, ili su produkt umjetničke slobode, na što nemam primjedbu, s obzirom da poanta beletristike jest da čitatelji imaju emotivne reakcije na doživljeno. Time više za hrvatske romane, koji su napisani u relativno kratkom razdoblju (150 godina), a još važnije za serijale.
In comparison to a previous title in the series, this book has left a much better impression, due to it's larger expansion and complicated plot, which started with ''The rival of Maria Theresa''. Also, I was glad to see Jurica Meshko and Stanka (the protagonists of the first book in the series), and it has several references which return everything to the beginning of the series, which requires to keep a close attention to the plot (I admit that I forgot many of the characters and a lot of previous event pop out of nowhere, although it's due to my deliberate not informing myself about what's happening, as to not ruin a surprise). As before, the book is full of various contents, either as a part of historical events, inspired or based, or as a product of artistic freedom, for which I don't have complaints, since that the point of fiction is for readers to have emotional connection with experiences. Much more for Croatian novels, which are written in relatively short period of time (around 150 years), and even more important for book series.

Nera u ova dva dela Suparnice Marije Terezije odlazi u službuz kraljice da glumi u predstavi ne bi li kraljica ponizila Vilmu koja je ljubavnica njenoga muža. Ceo dvor biva oduševljen Nerom, njenom lepotom i pameću i oko toga, naravno počinju spletke .
Car josip primećuje da jezuiti manipulišu dvorom i pokušava naći dokaz majci iza ledja jer je carica verna jezuitima.
Nera se sve manje vidja sa Sinišom jer je u službi carici a Josip se zaljubljuje u nju. Da li je za ljubav bitno koliko boli i čini distanca ?

Tako što im ulije u dušu svoju zlobu i nuka vredjati nevinu, poštenu ženu koja zlobnoj suparnici smeta u lepoti.''

Svakako bolja od prvoga dijela, ali nije mi niti blizu prve tri. Imam osjećaj da su Nera i Siniša tu ubačeni samo zato jer su čitatelji tako željeli, dok su u biti glavni likovi Marija Terezija i Josip. A Marija Terezija je prikazana kao jedan od tipova ljudi koji mi inače u životu idu izuzetno na živce tako da sam se većinom dok sam čitala živcirala. Ipak, vjerojatno je tako i trebalo. Očito je time autorica i željela prikazati svoju averziju prema tuđinskoj vlasti.
Nadam se da će sljedeći dio biti zanimljiviji, za sada obećava.

Now this one is better for me than the 3rd and 4th book, it doesn't lack action and while still waiting for some romance to kick in, I'm happy to see the Zagorka's famous style of making the pages filled with plots and all kinds of intrigues. I'm thrilled to see Anselmo back (he's an interesting character to me + he reminds me of the 1st book which is my favourite so far). Even the part in Parma I enjoyed. All in all, my favourite book after the 1st one.

Kada je Nera ubola Josipa sa zlatnom iglom bila sam ponosna, bila sam kao "bravo carice tako treba" jako badass i sviđa mi se.

Niz zapleta i raspleta i neverovatnih spletki. Cak je malo preterano koliko se za Neru sve okrece na zlo koje, bar za sada, pobedjuje. Zagorka ne prestaje da me iznenadjuje i u 5. knjizi. Marija Terezija je ta koju bi trebalo proglasiti vesticom i spaliti na lomaci. :)
