I've had this on my book shelf since 2011 when I was given it as a gift. I decided to read it as it fitted a reading challenge for the Aussie Readers group.
Like all Underbelly books, I liked that it had different stories in each chapter and was not just about Carl Williams and the Gangland War.


I liked the chapter about the undercover detective that infiltrated the Italian mafia in Griffith. It went into detail about how he created his new identity and befriended a waitress to get closer to his targets.

It was very interesting to read about this process.


The chapter about he Kingslake/ Kilmore fires (Black Saturday in Victoria Australia) was heartbreaking but informative.


Overall I enjoyed reading this book.

This was so much more than a gangland book. I bought it because it had the story of Carl Williams death but it offers the reader so many other stories, including what happened on Black Saturday in Victoria, it was the first time I really read a decent report of it and it was an eye opener.

As a writing team these guys can't be beat - but for what started as a gangland book it went way beyond my expectations awesome read all around loved it
