Reading, writing, and white-water rafting are the three things Anitra Lynn enjoys the most. She is the author of erotic romances from contemporary to science fiction and everything in between. Even though her tales range from sensual to sizzling, with settings from the high rises of New York to the distant shores of an alien world, one thing all her stories share is compelling characters involved in unforgettable romances.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this new series, but these cowboy coyotes pleasantly surprised me. It was a nice twist that they weren't really aware they were shifters until they met their mate. After longing for that special someone but thinking he was destined to be alone, Marshal's attraction and connection to Elliot was on a primal level and his animal instincts were brought to the surface. And since Elliot teased Marshal from the very beginning with naughty suggestions while they were riding his horse back to the ranch, it was only a matter of time before Marshal gave in and claimed him like they both wanted. I'd say their animal counterparts were happy as well. Elliot's amnesia, the homophobic asshole sheriff (and yes I laughed when he peed himself from fear), and the other employees of Marshal's ranch added nicely to the storyline and I can't wait to see what's in store for them next.
Even though I knew there were shifters in the book, I found myself a bit confused (in a where will the plot reveal itself sort of way). Seems this book had a slower reveal. Was Marshal a shifter, I wondered in the beginning. After all, he was talking about mates and claiming and there was knotting. But the story gave no indication of any shifter business until it was half over. I thought it was a bit weird that, though that they were clueless, they didn't wonder at the terms and actions going on with things (I mean, knotting - that would make me ask questions!). And Cassidy didn't blink at the use of "mate," which is a bit unusual a term for humans to use. I just thought it was weird, lol.
Until Marshal let the "mate" phrase slip a few times near the middle of the book there really was no indication it was a shifter story, hence my confusion/wondering about things. I guess a lot of it would be instinctual -- their actions, but still. We discover Elliot is a shifter -- a coyote (and that's not a spoiler given the title and series!). He was confused about things, but hey he had amnesia. Marshal didn't see phased, which was sort of weird. Kingsley was an asshole, but that's a given. He is the villain. Kingsley being a major asshole triggered Marshal to shift into a coyote. Again, it was pretty weird how blasé people were about it. It was basically: So you change into a coyote? Shug, I guess I do. 0.o
And then Jakes was all, "Someday my mate will come." Which seems weird. Does he know he's a coyote? Doesn't he think it's weird to think of mates and shifting into animals? This isn't what most people would be saying or behaving like given the situation! Lol.
Okay and the part about Elliot being the son of the president of the United States - WTH? Talk about unexpected!
But this book left a lot of questions unanswered. I hope the other books shed some light on the rules for shifters in the book-verse. Otherwise things will be pretty vague...I want answers damn it!
I only just barely finished this book. It started out okay. However there was so much confusing and conflicting information about shifters. I understand that I was reading a paranormal romance, and so as I always do, I give a bit of leeway. I get that stories will be far-fetched, and normally that is a good thing for me. But this book just felt all over the place.
And don't get me started on the main bad guy in this. Wasn't it enough that the Sherrif was a huge homophobic asshole? Why did he also have to be disgusting? Why did he have to hork mucous all the time and wipe snot all over his shirt. Jesus, I felt naseated reading scenes with Judd Kingsley.
The ending? Where
The only reason that this didn't get one star was the sex in shifted form. I liked that because it made sense to me. I have always thought it was weird in other paranormal romances where both characters are shifters and yet they aren't attracted to each other in shifted form. Especially when they are the same species. So the sex in shifted form helped me believe the story a bit more. Just barely though.
A fun series. Very unique characters and stories. The author takes great advantage of the fact that these are fiction and comes up with some entertaining theories on shifters and mating.
I've read all 13 that are currently out and they've gone through all kinds of things including amnesia, shadows, knots to dark/light compounds and even male pregnancy with all kinds of hot, sexy men. So much going on and I only touched on the tip of the topics - all mixed in with hot sex - what's not to enjoy!!
Wow!!! Como jugó con mi mente este libro! No me esperaba para nada ese final, totalmente fuera de lo normal que he leído sobre éste género. Me encantó!
Opening scene odd. He hugged him out of the blue after telling him he wasn't going to jump him. The visions are strange, too. He says that they're going to happen no matter what he does but then in the same paragraph says that maybe it's wishful thinking.
The mixing up words thing is cute.
He announced he was gay to a rancher he'd never met in Utah? Idiot.
Gives a whole new meaning to instalove.
Be forewarned: If, like me, you have a visceral reaction to descriptions of mucous from the nose, you may want to steer clear of this book or keep a barf bag handy.
This is so weird. Everyone's mannerisms and reactions to things are strange. Out of the blue, with little provocation and nothing really happening yet, one guy as an aside considers something paranormal could be going on.
Finally a ranch with a believable number of workers.
Finally someone who knows canines aren't completely colorblind!
Well I didn't see that coming. How did nobody recognize him?
Well that was just odd. Different from the usual shifter fade so that was nice ...but odd.
To be honest, this book confused the hell out of me. I liked how it started and I really liked Elliot. But, then, I got a whole lot of confused. I don't want to give anything away, but I kept saying to myself WTF?! I thought the rest of the wranglers at the ranch were too unphased ny everything going on. Even the word usage didn't make them turn their heads. Who uses the term 'mate' as a human, besides Aussies as a term for 'friend'? Yeah, I didn't think so. So, it was little things like that that made me scratch my head.
Like many others who read this book I found it intruiging yet strange. Its well written and consistent with this authors style and skill. However, the concept and rules take some getting used to. But the sex scenes are awesome. Warning unlike many other shifter books they DO come together as animals once.
So this story is more of a 3~3.49 star story, BUT it has the cutest twist in it. I did not see that one coming. I was wondering if he was gonna get out because of a technicality or something- nope! Haha, I loved the twist! Thus, I bumped it to 3.5~4 stars.
I went in thinking I wasn't going to like this story as much (not sure why, just had a feeling), but I did like it, a lot actually.
I've read quite a few shifter stories and I'm glad I picked up this one. The characters were likeable (except for the sheriff) and I really liked the twist on the shifter theme. Overall a very enjoyable, easy read and I look forward to reading more from this author.
