September Story

Rate this book
Jo Adams can’t speak of her late father, whom she watched die when she was a child. When her mother, novelist Hannah Adams, introduces Jo to English movie star Jeremy Stewart, instant attraction leads to a one night stand, but Jo flees, afraid of commitment.

Through letters the couple reconnects, as Jo describes her grandparents’ unsuccessful struggle to preserve their mixed marriage. Unable to commit to Jeremy, Jo resumes a loveless affair, while Jeremy’s performance in There Is Something Here is touted for a Golden Globe. Yet in an act worthy of an Oscar, his true feelings remain hidden, his heart still pierced by the memory of his own loss.

As truths surface, layers of history intertwine in lives tainted from racism and intolerance. A man similar to Hannah’s father, Jeremy is fighting for his sanity, not only the woman he loves.

September Story by Anna Scott Graham is a wonderful read. This story is about human behavior at its best and worst.

The first paragraph opens with Jo, at the age of 10, in the vehicle her father was driving. There was a bad accident and Jo is not able to move or reach out to her father, her father slowly dies from the severe injuries he suffered.

Jeremy and Jo meet on the production set. Jeremy is the leading role in the filming of her mother's screenplay. They are instantly attracted to one another. Jo spends the night with Jeremy and runs away the next morning, unable to handle her emotions. She runs to the safety of her grandmother's house.

From there the story takes many twists and turns as all the main characters suffer through their own losses, pain and suffering.

I wasn't sure where the author was taking the story as Jo and Jeremy start a relationship but their individual pain and loss keep them apart. As they are both unable to talk about the tragedies that exist in their past.

I was happy that there was indeed a happy ending to this story.

Gorgeous book, with many complications laced with racism and death, but an emotional love story that I was willing to have a happy ending which I was thrilled with.
