In Tracey Corderoy's and Sophie Allsopp's sweet and whimsical story, Luna and her polar bear friend, Bear, discover a beautiful yellow flower growing out of the snow. Luna quickly dubs the flower her "sunshine flower" and vows to keep in forever. When the flower fades, Luna becomes depressed and Bear vows to find her another flower. With Bear gone on his quest, Luna realizes what really matters to her. And it isn't a flower.

The illustrations are just beautiful.

This is such a beautiful book and I thought the story was so sweet. I loved the emphasis on the importance of friendship and relationships over material things. As someone with an anthropology background, I also loved the fact that the human character wasn't your standard Anglo child. It was such a great setting to have the story take place in a snowy, northern spot with an Inuit-like child. It added a special dimension to the book. While this isn't a holiday book, it would be a perfect winter read for any family. And it emphasizes important values that we can all appreciate.

I am currently giving away a copy of this book on my blog. Entries close on Friday, December 21:

Lovely illustrations. And the friendship between Luna and Bear is strong.

Only ...

people aren't friends with polar bears. And bees and butterflies and slugs and flowers do not live amongst the snow.

I know it was fiction so I'm probably being nitpicky.

Arctic story of a girl and best friend (polar bear). He finds a pretty flower one day and gives it to Luna. The flower dies and the girl becomes very sad. Bear decides to go in search of another yellow flower and stays away for a long time. The girl really misses her bear. Great ending. Nice story to read aloud. Pretty illustrations. Highly recommended for elementary.

This book has sweet and cute illustrations and the little girl, who is the main character is very cute as well! This story could show the reader a culture they probably don't know much about. It would be great to use in the classroom and to teach new cultures. The polar bear adds a funny part into the story and kids really enjoy that.

This is a great book to spark some imagination in young children. This book has simple yet bright illustrations. This book also has to do with friendship which is a big part of a child's life. A Flower In the Snow is a good book to read with children in grades pre-k or kindergarten. There are also a few new vocabulary words the children can be introduced too (igloo).

A Flower in the Snow is a wonderful book about friendship! This book is perfect for a read aloud or retelling in K+ classrooms. This heartwarming tale about two friends shares the true meaning of friendship. It can be used with a lesson on how to grow a flower as well. The illustrations are large and very engaging. This book is charming and sure to delight!

Luna is a little girl who lives in a cold and snowy place. Her best friend is a large white bear (polar bear?), who loves to make her smile. When the bear discovers a yellow flower growing in the snow, he picks it for Luna. Luna’s happiness lasts until the flower wilts, whereupon the bear sets out on a quest to find her another. He travels all over without success. But, when he finally returns, both Luna and the bear have learned that their friendship is most valuable thing that they have. In addition, Luna has spent their time apart growing and nurturing a garden, which soon sprouts a whole field of flowers.

Suspend your disbelief for this one and enjoy the illustrations because this would NEVER HAPPEN in real life! Little girls do not snuggle up to polar bears, nor do they live in igloos by themselves. Fields of flowers do not bloom in the snow (ok, maybe you’d get some early crocuses), and butterflies and bees do not thrive in wintery climates. Other than that… The friendship between Luna and the bear is sweet, and the depictions of the bear – especially – are absolutely adorable, but the individual parts of this story seem hung together without any attention to detail/accuracy. For instance, although it’s never explicitly stated, Luna appears to be Inuit, and while many kids might not have any idea what that means, it’s strange to have the author then liken their compatibility to “peanut butter and jelly” – would Luna even know what that was? Is there a more culturally appropriate comparison? And as I read this I imagined how bitterly cold it must be outside in the snow, but Luna never puts on a hat or a scarf. Details like these would make even a fictitious/fantasy world more believable. Having a more logical consistency – even in a fantastical story for kids – makes the story you’re telling that much better.

As an elementary school teacher, I’m constantly on the lookout for new picture books to be added to a classroom library that will not only entertain the students but provide a valuable source of life lessons (and beautiful artwork!). A FLOWER IN THE SNOW by Tracey Corderoy & Sophie Allsopp is one of those books.

Amidst beautiful, soft artwork Luna and Bear show the reader what it means to be a friend. When Bear finds a flower growing in the snow, he presents it to his best friend Luna. After it has wilted, Luna is deeply sad and nothing will cheer her up. Deciding that only another flower will do, Bear sets off to find one for his dear friend. He is gone for quite a while, and it is only once he has left that Luna begins to realize that it is not what Bear does or gives her, but Bear himself that is the real treasure of their friendship.

A FLOWER IN THE SNOW by Tracey Corderoy & Sophie Allsopp is a wonderfully told and beautifully illustrated story of what it means to be friends. I fully believe that not only will young children love listening to the story of Bear and Luna, but that parents, older siblings, caregivers and teachers will enjoy reading it to them.

Luna and Bear are best friends, and they do everything together. One day, Luna finds a flower growing in the snow (the story is set in the arctic, or thereabouts). It puts a smile on her face and a spring in her step until one day it fades, as flowers do, and with it fades Luna's smile. Bear goes on a mission to find another snow flower for Luna, searching through deserts, tropical islands, forests, etc. but to no avail. In the end he decides that all he really wants is to see Luna again, and that's enough to put a smile on both of their faces. (Plus, turns out Luna planted the seed from the flower, and now she has a whole bunch of them.)

Was the story in A Flower in the Snow completely predictable? Yes! Did it border on precious and twee? A little! But these are adult concerns, I'm aware, and would certainly not hinder a child's enjoyment of the story. Besides, the illustrations are lovely and the polar bear is really cute. I think that kids will really enjoy it. I did, though it's not necessarily something I (as an adult) would gravitate towards or hang on to.

SUMMARY: Luna loves living in the snow. But she loves her polar bear friend, Bear, even more. One day, Bear discovers a beautiful golden flower growing in the snow and gives it to Luna. But when the flower dies, and Luna is sad, Bear goes on a search around the world for another to bring to Luna. When he returns home, he realizes that Luna is his greatest treasure and the he is hers. And that they are happiest when together.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrator does a wonderful job of making a predominantly white setting look interesting and fun. There are plenty of adorable and funny details along the way that add interest.

THE GOOD: This is a lovely story of friendship between a girl and her polar bear. When the going gets tough, they both do something in a big way for the other to prove their love and friendship, but they also realize that being together is by far the most meaningful thing they could do.
THE NOT AS GOOD: The writing does tend to run on without pausing at times, causing the sentences to be too complex. For instance:
"Luna lived in an igloo...
...and Bear lived in a snow cave in her little garden where, one bright day, something most unusual popped up."

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 4-8

"A Flower in the Snow" is one of the best books for children I have seen in the past year. Not only are the illustrations fully colored and full page, but the pictures match the story perfectly. In this story, the illustrator has done a phenomenal job of showing the emotion of the characters through the expressions on their faces. This is a book that I definitely wish to add to the collection of books I have for my children. There is a good message in this book about the bond of friendship that I think parents will appreciate. The little girl is adorable and someone I think kids could identify with. I also liked that this book shows a child that anyone can persevere. Even the flower was able to grow in the snow, which may open up discussion topics with your child. Overall, this book is well deserving of five stars. Perfect book for a child.

The Deal: Luna and her best friend in the world Bear (who, yes, happens to be a polar bear) enjoy spending their days together playing in the snow. One day they discover a beautiful golden flower that brings even more happiness to their lives... until the flower dies and makes Luna sad.

In order to see her smile again, Bear goes on a quest to find another flower for his best friend.

My Thoughts: A Flower in the Snow is a very short but sweet picture book aimed toward the younger kids.

It's a lovely story about friendship and companionship, and the illustrations were adorable. I loved that Bear was Luna's best friend.

If you want to share with your young ones a story that's seasonal but not religiously oriented, then A Flower in the Snow is a very good option.

There were a couple of pictures in this story that were just the sweetest. I really liked the friendship between the little girl and the bear. And while it was odd that they seemed to be the only ones living up in the cold artic, it still suited the book well. I did feel bad for the bear who had to go off and search for the flower. But I wasn't expecting the surprise that awaited him when he came back. It was interesting to see how the little girl had been resourceful during her time of grief and I liked the whimsical ending. I'd recommend.

A Flower in the Snow is a sweet story about the friendship between a little girl and a polar bear. The friends play together and discover a beautiful flower.Bear picks the flower for his friend but it inevitably fades and the little girl is inconsolable. Bear decides to look for another and in doing so leaves his friend alone. Both suffer through the separation and although bear returns without a flower, together they find a better way to enrich their lives. A little saccharine, but nicely told and beautifully illustrated. Definitely a story of hope, and a useful conversation starter about growing plants and seasonal changes.

This book has great illustrations. It has a great vocabulary word to introduce to pre-k students and that word is igloo which is a house made of ice. This book uses imagination throughout it because a little girl and polar bear are best friends. When the little girl is sad that the flower she picked died, the polar bear started traveling to try to find her a new flower to make her happy again, but with the polar bear gone, the little girl is sad and just wants her friend back. Then, she uses the seeds from her picked flower the died to plant a garden with polar bear. I loved this book. It is truly about friendship.
