Notorious Bachelors #3

Pecados Escondidos

Rate this book

4.5 stars.

I created two new shelves after reading this regency romance: The Pathetic OW and the Pump & Dump OW. The OW in this novel was actually a former OW, because the H had ended their affair YEARS ago. However, I gotta say that this hero must have had some Love Potion Number 9 in his penis because he has this bitch Antonia ( OW ) mooning over his dick and obsessing over him even though he hasn't touched her in years. She has a regular sex buddy but still claims to be desperately in love with the H. She was in a serious depression on the day of his wedding to the heroine and had to drink herself to sleep on his wedding night because she couldn't bear to think of him making love to his beautiful young bride. Damn but she was filled with some angsty jealousy over the hero. She was mostly pathetic because the H was not tempted by her dubious charms at all. He acknowledged her attractiveness but she not longer excited him at all. Hell, he had found an English husband for her to marry - a guy 3 times older ! If the H had loved her, would he have wanted her to marry another man? The H is not even jealous or bothered by Antonia's other men. This bitch should have seen the writing on the wall from then but nope. She still persisted in hoping he would return to her arms and declare true love. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 In another author's imagination, maybe this OW would have been heroine. Who knows? The ingredients were there: they had met years before in Spain when he saved her and she rewarded him by giving him loads of sex. Unfortunately for Antonia, the role of heroine will not be hers even if she acts as if she thinks she should be the heroine. I know some readers might actually like Antonia and feel sorry for her but I just couldn't tolerate her. I know she suffered a lot and lost her entire family in Spain but she just expected too much from Michael. She also had no boundaries when it came to interfering in the lives of the H and heroine. She became so obsessed with wanting to find out everything about the heroine that she conned the H into letting her act like a part time bodyguard/protector for Julianne. The one redeeming thing she did do, at the end, however, is to play an instrumental role in saving Julianne's life from another crazy stalking bitch. I give her some kudos for that but I still hated her because she felt that Michael belonged to her.

Now to our beautiful heroine Julianne. She was betrothed to the hero's older brother but he died and so the H inherited not only the title of Marquess and became heir to the Dukedom, but also got to marry the heroine. Now the second reason I think this H has got Love Potion #9 in his penis is because the heroine hadn't really felt much for him until the HOT wedding night. She didn't really know him much since he'd been away on the Continent fighting Napoleon's rat bastard soldiers, so her feelings were kinda neutral until he got down and dirty on the wedding night. That was sexy ! It was the most beautiful wedding night scene, written from the POV of both characters. After the sexy wedding night, the heroine became addicted to the H.

The H reminded me a bit of Tor from The Chief by Monica McCarty - not in physical appearance but in attitude to marriage. He treated Julianne the same way Tor had done to Christina: as a sexual bedmate. However, in both novels the heroes were unable to maintain that wall they had built around their hearts. The fall of an alpha male is always a great thing to see. Michael tried so hard to resist Julianne but keeps wanting to spend more and time with her - time that doesn't only include sex. He also provides a bodyguard for her because someone is trying to kill him and he's afraid that they may target her too.

There's also a spy story involved because of the H's other job and a secret child that his dead brother had fathered with some dirty whore who treated the little girl like crap. It was sad to see the scenes where the heroine would visit the poor child and the nasty evil whore mother would be primarily concerned with getting money from Julianne. That woman didn't even give the child any attention or affection. She deserved to be gutted like fish for treating an innocent little girl like that. The heroine was the one who knew about the kid's existence and she was the one who bravely saved the little tyke from her cruel monster of a mother. Julianne was a veritable saint. I'm jealous. She's another too sweet for words type of heroine. It's Julianne who convinces Michael that they should adopt the little girl and raise her in their family rather than leave her to be brought up by paid strangers.

This was a great story and I would have given it 5 stars if Lawrence had dumped Antonia's ass and found a nicer woman. Lawrence was a really wonderful man. He could have been a hero in a future novel. I almost wished the author had given him his own novel with another woman. That pathetic bitch Antonia didn't deserve such a loyal man since she used him for sex while openly stating how much she loved the hero. She had incorrectly believed that the H, Michael, was the type of man who would be unable to ever love a woman. When she realized he'd fallen in love with his wife Julianne, she finally packed her bags and set sail for foreign shores. Good riddance to the bitch. I would have hated to have her stay in England and keep mooning after Michael's Love Potion filled penis. 😆🤣

When I think of secrets, espionage and romance, I am immediately excited by the prospect of being transported into an adventure that captivates my mind and heart. Unfortunately, I was not whisked away in His Sinful Secret by Emma Wildes, the last book in the trilogy of the Notorious Bachelors.

Since birth, Jualianne Sutton has been destined to marry Harry Hepburn, the Marquess of Longhaven. The marriage, an arrangement between both families, came to an abrupt altering after Harry's sudden and unexpected death. Assuming his late brother's position as heir, Michael Hepburn steps into not only the title and responsibilities of the Marquess but also, at his parents insistence, the bridegroom to Jualianne. Facing a union out of duty and obligation, Michael coolly accepts the marriage to console his grieving parents with the mindset of "I'll survive. I've certainly been through worse." Jualianne barely knew Michael when he left to fight in the Napoleonic war almost five years ago. Now, a 19 year old young woman, Jualianne still views him as a stranger, but accepts her role as the Marquess' wife. Polite yet distant, charming but enigmatic, Michael is the epitome of complexity. Though Jualianne may not be marrying this mysterious man for love, after marriage she hopes they will be able to learn who the other person is and at least share their lives in mutual companionship. Developing trust proves difficult when both Michael and Jualianne are hiding secrets from each other that could not only threaten their marriage but also their very lives.

I enjoyed the sensual and alluring style of Emma Wildes in the previous Notorious Bachelors books: My Lord Scandal and Our Wicked Mistake. However, this last installment lacked the charm and captivation that pulled me into the other books and that I have come to expect in her stories. Michael was considerate and accommodating to Jualianne, but his aloof demeanor and general detachment from her throughout much of the daily interaction made it difficult to see much chemistry between the two. Jualianne, both beautiful and intelligent, presented herself as reserved but inquisitive, with her main goal being to establish communication with her husband outside of the bedroom. Overall, their relationship appeared dry and disconnected, missing the romantic spark and emotional connection that I like between developing couples. In contrast, the secondary characters, Antonia and Lawrence, provided the charisma and attraction that was lost between the main couple. Ultimately, Antonia and Lawrence held my attention more through the majority of the story. The mystery that developed throughout the series is quickly solved with a disappointing and anticlimactic end. However, there was a nice twist which could warrant a fourth book if Ms. Wildes chooses to extend the trilogy. His Sinful Secret, while a bit bland, still concluded an overall well-written and well-developed series. Ms. Wildes is an author I would not hesitate to read more work from in the future.

Favorite Quote:

"Michael was brilliant as a cut diamond, but also every bit as hard. The facets too were many."

"forever"!

Favorite Quote: “It was irritating to think that everyone was concerned on how she pleased him, but no one seemed to worry over whether or not he pleased her.”

Julianne Sutton has been committed to marry the Marquess of Longhaven since birth. But when the current Marquess, Harry, dies, it’s his brother Michael who is to be her bridegroom. Julianne soon realizes that it’s not only her wedding plans that have changed.
Michael Longhaven has spent years battling intrigue and deception in the game of espionage. But nothing prepares him for a beguiling and innocent wife who challenges him in the most important game of all- love.

In the 3rd book of Emma Wildes Notorious Bachelor’s series we get to know Michael Longhaven; the last bachelor in a group of men who’s friendships solidified in war and lasted beyond. Well written with an suspenseful and romantic storyline ; Ms Wildes takes us in to the shadowy world of spies, espionage, and revenge. Charismatic characters fill the storyline with personality and wit as Michael and Julianne find their way through marriage, love, and trust. I have enjoyed this series immensely. The first one, My Lord Scoundrel captured my heart with it’s sweetly romantic tale. The second one, My Wicked Mistake, was a little bland but made up for it with a secondary romance that had me laughing the whole book. This one, My Secret Sin, follows along the same lines as Ms. Wildes first one and captured me from the very start.

Julianne Sutton, our heroine, is a delightful character. Seemingly fragile and a trifle dull in the beginning; you learn learn that appearances can be deceiving and she is extremely intelligent, observant, and courageous. How can she not be? She marries a man that she knows nothing about and rather then beat her fists against fate-she does what she can to make her marriage work.

Michael Longhaven, our hero, is contained. That is the best word to use. Settled so long in the spy game; distrust and deceit are but second nature to him. He keeps his emotions well buried and only allows you to see what he wants you to see. When his older brother Harry dies, he is summoned back to England and assumes his brothers betrothed as his own at his parents insistence.
They are both rather alike in personality though I’m sure they would deny it. Neither given to overly emotional dramatics (thank goodness) or displays. Yet, when they do speak of their feelings, it comes across more poignant because of how they are.

Ms. Wildes slowly builds their relationship one step at a time. After all, they don’t know each other at all and trust is a hard emotion to command. The sexual play comes fast (after all they ARE married) but she doesn’t have our heroine swooning out of bed though she does do some serious swooning in bed. *fanning myself* Michael tries very hard to keep his wife and life separate and while Julianne doesn’t raise a fuss about it, you can see how certain things Michael does hurts her. This shows in certain scenes where you are given each of their reactionary POVs. It’s amazing how a simple sentence or event can be construed differently. I enjoyed the fact the Julianne doesn’t hide her intelligence and questions Michael about his actions and motives. She calls him out; but in a gentle manner and not through nefarious or jealousy invoking schemes. Though I did wish to see some reactions of anger or jealousy between them. They were a bit too calm at times and each of them have secrets that should have been disclosed in the beginning. It’s only through a series of events that Ms. Wildes has our couple face their trial of fire and emerge unscathed with their love and hearts intact.

Of course, there is always a secondary romance in Ms. Wildes stories and this one does not disappoint. Our couple here has some explosive secrets and issues of their own that could possibly affect our hero and heroine and their story intertwines and blends well into the main storyline. This couple is such a polar opposite of our main couple that the differences are exciting and humorous to watch and compare. The ending is rather climatic and provoking affair that wraps everything up quite nicely and answers a lot of questions. I will admit that to those who have read the series; one particular development will have you, like me, hoping that Ms. Wildes write a fourth book so we can find out what the results of that admission is.

I picked this up from my local half-price bookstore because I thought the cover was gorgeous and it was only a dollar. I can only say that I liked this book because the romance just didn't really do it for me. I think this is because the romance started out historically correct, rather than pandering to my modern romantic sensibilities. I can't help it. I want the romance (intellectual and emotional) to come before all the smexiness.

Julianne and Michael are brought together by an arranged marriage, and they start their familial duty of producing an heir for the duchy as soon as possible. Through their entanglements in bed and the pillow talk after, they realize that it just might be possible to have that long-sought-but-rarely-found sort of marriage within the aristocracy: a happy one.

What I found interesting was that both characters came from happy marriages, yet they didn't expect to have such luck themselves. I also kept looking for the reason why the book was titled "His Sinful Secret," and while the answer wasn't what I expected, I wish there had been a little more punch to it.

The stories of three English soldiers/friends who've been changed by their experiences during the long war with Napoleon Bonaparte. One was a British spy working undercover in Spain. His capture and torture by the French nearly cost him his life. If not for his last-ditch rescue by his two friends, he would not have survived.

War changes the people involved in it. These books show how each friend must adapt back into society. But for one of them, his self-doubts and mistrust may prevent him from re-learning how to love.

Michael Hepburn does too much thinking in this book. Or, rather, there is too much text devoted to Michael's interminable musings in this book. Not as bad as a Staphanie Laurens book, where I just want to slap the characters because they never stop the unending dissection of what they think they want and what they think they must do, but definitely enough to make me annoyed by this book.

In the final book of the trilogy, Michael is the last of the three friends to remain unmarried, though that doesn't last long. In the previous books, he is described as enigmatic, controlled, and intense. In this one, we learn a little more about what has made him the man he is now. Michael worked for years as a spy for Wellington in the war against Napoleon. He was called home when his older brother died and took up his duties as the Marquess of Longhaven, including marrying his brother's fiancée. He also continued his work for the Crown, working to tie up loose ends from the war.

Julianne is beautiful, young, and innocent. She seems to be a bit of a pushover at the very beginning, giving in to the change of fiancé with no argument, allowing others to take control of the wedding planning, and so on. But it quickly becomes evident that she is smart, observant, and brave, along with having a kind heart.

I enjoyed watching the development of Michael and Julianne's relationship. It builds slowly as they don't know each other much at all before the wedding. Michael is determined to keep his life separate from Julianne. That doesn't work out too well from the start, as two days before the wedding he was attacked. The injury Michael received was not something that could be hidden on his wedding night, though he did his best to distract her from it. I ached a little for Julianne those first few days after the wedding, as it was clear to her that Michael avoided her during the days. I loved seeing her gently call him out on his actions. She is far more perceptive than Michael expected, and there are some scenes where he must think fast to keep his secrets. Julianne wants more from her marriage than just a physical relationship, and her intuition and attention open Michael's eyes to a whole new concept of marriage. I enjoyed how Michael's increasing fascination with his wife warred with his desire to protect his secrets.

At the same time, Michael is still involved in his work for the Crown. He has experienced several attacks and suspects that the culprit is the French spy who was his nemesis during the war. Assisting him are two fellow spies, Lawrence and Antonia. Things are somewhat awkward with Antonia, as she was Michael's lover several years earlier. He is over it, but she is not. All of them are intent on finding out who is behind the attacks on Michael. It was interesting to see who was following who and why. Michael was also worried about Julianne's safety. Julianne turned out to be hiding a secret of her own and was quite adept at evading observation when she wanted to. As Michael closed in on the person trying to kill him, he discovered an unexpected connection to Julianne. The final confrontation was intense but left one question unanswered.

There was a secondary romance between Lawrence and Antonia. Lawrence's feelings for Antonia were evident from the beginning. I felt bad for him because of her continuing infatuation with Michael. There were times when I didn't like her very much and thought that she was using Lawrence. As the book went on, I was impressed with Lawrence's control as he waited for her to work through her feelings.

The epilogue was well done, with a conversation between Michael and his boss. I did not expect the information that Michael confronted Charles with, and hadn't seen it coming at all. There was also a meeting between Michael and Lawrence. I had to laugh at the advice Michael had for him about dealing with Antonia.

I'm logging all the books I read in the manic episode(s) I had in the final weeks leading up to the bar so there will be no information pertaining to the content of these books. Frankly, I don't even remember what happened in them. They'll all get three stars and you'll pretend that you didn't see this.

Gostei imenso deste livro!

The Spy, His Wife, The Widow, Her lover...

I am finding that I really, really like Emma Wildes' voice. She has taken a trope that I despise with the fury of 1,000 fists -- the spying Duke/Earl/Marquess -- and made it not only palatable but very interesting.

Michael Hepburn, the new Marques of Longhaven is a spy for the Crown. He was merely a younger son until his older brother died suddenly. To help his parents through their grief he agreed to marry the young woman his brother was promised to from almost the cradle.

Julianne Sutton is the beautiful daughter of the Hepburns' best friends. She had been used to the idea of marrying the laughing affable Harry. But the quieter, more enigmatic Michael is a different prospect altogether. But marry they do and immediately Julianne is confronted with her husband's mysterious silences and even more mysterious various knife and bullet wounds he sports when he comes home.

Michael is still on the trail of an elusive French spy name Roget and thinks he can hide that side of his life from his wife. But Julianne is not the naive, sheltered woman Michael thinks she is. She is observant and intuits much more than Michael realizes much to his chagrin. She also has her own secrets which makes Michael underestimate her a bit.

Helping Michael is the sultry widow Lady Antonia Taylor. An ex-lover who believes she is still in love with Michael and who, for her own reasons wants Roget dead. She will do anything she can to bring about his demise even if it means protecting Julianne, a woman she is supremely jealous of.

And Finally there is Lawrence. He is also a super-sexy, super spy who works with Michael and Antonia and who himself is in love with Antonia. He is working -- somewhat impatiently -- to make Antonia get over her feelings for Michael.

All four characters get a pov which I think works very well because they each come from events from their own perspective. I liked that each characters' thoughts and feelings felt true to them even when they weren't in fact completely true. For instance, Antonia is a very unreliable narrator when it comes to her perception of Julianne. And I think Michael is rather naive himself when it comes to his understanding of how Antonia feels about him. But I also liked that the author made all four characters very sympathetic and I liked all four.

I thought the storytelling was good and I didn't feel that I could guess every line or every plot movement. It felt like a book I have not read a ton of times before.

This is the third book in a trilogy. I did not read the other two because the blurb on this one intrigued me more than those did. But I did not feel lost and plan to back track to read the others.

My 5-kiss review from www.TwoLipsReviews.com:

Fans of the Notorious Bachelors series will fall in love with the familiar yet enigmatic Michael Hepburn, whom we met in the previous books. Michael marries Julianne Sutton, the woman his late brother was supposed to have married. Their families arranged the marriage years ago, and Michael is willing to fulfill his familial duty despite the fact that he barely knows the girl. His brother was in love with her and he's feeling guilty and worries that she's being shortchanged because as a spy for the Crown he's completely different than his carefree, lighthearted brother was.

Michael was a prisoner of war, and it changed him. And to complicate matters even more, he has a painful new knife wound he needs to either hide or explain on his wedding night. Michael has a lot of secrets (not to mention enemies) so he shuts himself off from her the morning after their wedding night, and she's left feeling hurt and confused.
By contrast, Michael is drawn to Julianne’s uncomplicated innocence. She’s like a ray of sunshine in his otherwise dark and dreary life. It’s an absolute delight to see her break through his seemingly cold and untouchable exterior. But Julianne is not without her own secrets, and they’re secrets that will put her in harm’s way.

His Sinful Secret also has a secondary romance. Antonia was a Spanish noble Michael met during the war. She loves Michael and Lawrence loves her, so there’s a love triangle going on. I never warmed up to Antonia, but I was, however, pleased to see that the author didn’t use some of the trite “jealous ex-lover” nonsense that I’ve read in other books.
Once again I’m very impressed with this third installment in this passionate series from Emma Wildes. It was so gratifying to see Michael's gradual change as he falls in love with his wife and vice versa. You don’t necessarily have to read the books in this series in order, but I’d recommend it anyway because you won’t want to miss a single page.

1/3 peppers heat rating, for explicit m/f sex

Ms. Wildes has done a wonderful job of bringing us a story of three best friends, Lord Alexander St. James in “My Lord Scandal”, Luke Daudet, Viscount Altea in “Our Wicked Mistake” and Michael Hepburn, Marquess of Longhaven in “His Sinful Secret”. All three have survived the Napoleonic/Peninsular War and are now trying to get back to the life they were meant to lead. There is plenty of romance, intrigue and mystery in all three stories.

In “His Sinful Secret” we find our last Notorious Bachelor Michael Hepburn, at a point of his brother’s unexpected death. With him inheriting the title of Marquess of Longhaven, he now must fulfill the betrothal contract that was long-standing between his brother and Julianne Sutton. The author has outdone herself in creating such a wonderful relationship between these two people. It was such a pleasure to encounter this young woman, Julianne who was so smart and way too perceptive for our Hero. Michael was astonished and pleasantly surprised with her. They both have great expectations of this marriage and. Michael means to keep separate his physical relationship from his deep feelings for her. This was one of the sweetest romance novels I’ve read in a long while. There’s plenty of spy intrigue, lots of twists and turns and finally we get to find out who the notorious adversary spy is!

I have waited to buy all three books before I read them, and truly was glad that I did. Each story is unique, but unified by these men and their women. All three deliver on suspense, romance, intrigue and wit. We get to know these men and we love watching them fall prey to love and at the end, marriage. It took me awhile to pick out my favorite one, and I thought Michael’s story, for me, was the best written and best developed as well as the most interesting of the three.

I highly recommend all three and have only one complaint: that all those secondary characters had a book of their own, that’s how good they were.
