I was given a e-copy in exchange for my honest review.

My 5 year old son and I really enjoyed this ghoulish read. It has great illustrations, rhyming schemes, and a creative storyline. I am a lover of monsters and the paranormal. It has seemed to rub off on my son. I do try to limit what he watches, but there are times when I catch him sneaking in to have a peek at my monster fest on tv. The book helps him understand that just because they are "monsters" doesn't mean that they have to be scarey, or that they don't have feeling. (Sort of a hidden message for kids that just because someone looks different, doesn't mean we should treat them differently) He loved the unique zombie ways of doing things. We shared many laughs, especially over the zombie ice skating. He said it looked like me when we went on our first trip to the ice rink. He also loved that the word snot was used in the book....got to love little boys. I see use enjoying this book for many more reads.

This is the third book by this author that my son has loved. I would recommend her books to all little ones. This author has continued to keep him interested and entertained with her creative writing styles and tales. The illustrators that do her books do amazing jobs as well. I look forward to enjoying more reading time with my son and her books.

I got this for free as a kindle edition (I got the notification from BookBub, if anyone is interested). I don't love zombies, but my 5 year old has been showing a greater interest in Halloween this year and so I wanted to read him some topical books.

It's about a live boy who likes to go out and play with the zombie kids, because, you know, they're not soooo bad! The rhymes are pretty good, although, I found myself anticipating something else and thus tripping through the lines, although that may have been because the light was low! :-) Anyway, I think the rhyme scheme and meter are well done. The illustrations are vibrant and not too gory. Unfortunately, I think most of it went over my son's head, he doesn't understand at all what zombies are, and I'm not sure I really want to explain it to him yet!

Using the GoodReads recommendations for the star ratings I'm giving this 3 stars because it's good, but not great and certainly not amazing! Perhaps it's closer to 3.5 stars though. The second and third reading made me think that perhaps it is quite good. The rhymes are good, the rhythm is true and never clunky. It's only slightly over-long in my opinion.

This book completely grabbed my attention - you don't usually find books about zombie children - and I found the cover intriguing. I am so glad that I picked it up when I found it for free on Amazon. It is HILARIOUS! And the artwork is spot on. The story of a boy who goes out to hang out with the zombie children in the evenings - what they do and the lesson this boy learns from them. There is a second book and I plan on reading that one soon.

The kids LOVED it. They laughed. They whooped. They pretended they were zombies. They asked me to read it a couple of more times. They looked at the artwork. They tried to make their own zombie kids books. This one of the books I don't mind that they keep asking me for. It might only be 20 pages, but I would pay the $2.99 for it.

I'm not a huge fan of books that feature zombies. Zombies creep me out. But, since this is a kids book, I can tolerate the zombie element. This is a nice rhyming story for kids that are just learning to read. I felt the language was a little stiff (purposely, since zombies are pretty stiff, too?)

Zombie Fun

My 10 year old grandson thinks this book was the perfect length. He enjoyed the illustrations. He liked that it was halloweenish but not actually about Halloween. He would recommend this book to anyone his age or a bit younger.

Here's what my 5 year old son and I have to say about this book. Visit us at http://motherdaughterbookreviews.com for more reviews.

SON SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

I liked how you learned that zombies are actually nice. The pictures of the zombies were not scary. They were funny.

There were lots of good parts. It was funny how one of the zombies had no head and he chopped off his own foot. I liked the part where the dog runs off with one of the zombie bones. It was funny when, if you are sitting behind a zombie in the movie theatre and you can't see, they can take their head off and put it on their knees. The zombies were eating eyeballs instead of popcorn in the movie theatre. I liked that zombies are actually really good bowlers because if they're not going to get all the bowling pins down, then they can roll their head a different way to get all of the pins down.

When the zombies were going camping, one of the zombies feet caught on fire - that was funny. It was funny how they are good golfers because they always keep their eye on the ball cause one of their eyes is the ball. I learned that if the zombies get hungry then you should just be like a statue and they will eventually stomp away.

There was nothing I didn't like about this book.

My bottom line:

I loved this book so much I want to read it every day. I would recommend it to everybody.

MOM SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

We love everything Halloween in this house and we are pretty excited to be featuring Halloween books all month long. In our household, the kids are fascinated by zombies year round. In fact, in our neighborhood, there is a weekly zombie cafe hosted by one of the local restaurants so we see zombies in full costume walking on the sidewalk every weekend. As a result, my kids are convinced that zombies are real. Luckily, this book confirms what we've been saying all along...zombies really are very nice! ;-)

When we first agreed to read and review Zombie-Kids, I was a bit worried about whether the images in the book would be too frightening for my kids. It turns out that they are hilarious. The images are so great and more along the lines of the video game Plants vs. Zombies. The illustrations are completely silly and not remotely scary. In fact, they are outstanding.

We all really enjoyed the story itself, told through a series of rhyming verses. There are so many funny parts that had us laughing out loud - many of which are mentioned above by my son. There is one part of the book that I would like to share because each of the four times that I've read this book to my kids, I actually stop and say it's my favorite part. This is the page about bowling:

Here's some advice that each zombie supposes:

Don't poke your fingers inside of their noses,

Hold the head by each ear, as you carefully linger,

So you're not to get zombie-snot on each finger.

Of course the accompanying image is of a headless zombie demonstrating (using his own head) of the consequences of using the nostrils as the bowling ball holes. :D

I do have one comment to make. I've stated above that the book is 20 pages long. Importantly, the word density is quite high. For example, on the bowling page, there are 8 rhyming lines. This is double what is typical for picture books. Also, each of the 20 pages has an illustration and accompanying text. It did not feel like a short book (i.e., you get your money's worth!).

My bottom line:

This is currently the most requested book in our house - and we have a house full of books! I think that really does say it all, doesn't it? I even read it to another boy my son's age and he LOVED it too. I would recommend this wonderful Halloween-themed picture book to families with children ages 4 and up. It is a lot of fun!

This book if full of fun and creepy zombies! I read this book to my 3 year old daughter and here is what she said, "Even though the zombies are icky, they are actually nice!" In my house we love monsters. I think that it's good to read stories about monsters because then your children learn to love them rather than be scared of monsters lurking under their beds! I absolutely loved this book. I loved the rhyming verses, rhyming books are always more fun to read. I adored the illustrations in this book. They are wonderful! We thought this book was funny, especially the part about going bowling with a zombie head and being careful not to stick your fingers in the zombie's nose and getting zombie-snot on your fingers.

I'm really loving this author so far, this is the second book I've read by Julia Dweck. We will continue reading her books in this house, I only wish the books were available in print. I would buy a copy of each! This book if perfect for Halloween! If your household loves monsters like we do, I think that you and your kids will love this book! Definitely check it out!

Before reading this myself I allowed my 8-yr old and 5-yr old to read it themselves. They came back excited and talking about dogs burying spines and Zombie Butchers. In our family, that sounds like a pretty good story. So, with good expectations, we sat down to read it again together.
And, I was not let down in the least. The text is simple enough that the 5-yr old could read much of it, but humorous enough that the older boy stayed interested as his brother read along. As soon as we finished, they both started discussing their favorite parts, with Zombie bowling taking home the big prize.
Knowing that it can be difficult to find books to interest boys in reading, I can't recommend this enough. It has all the things most boys like, and even a little phlegm. The illustrations present the characters in an unassuming way that even an easily scared child should find safe and approachable. And, the story presents them in a sweet and friendly way. If Zombies are like these, who wouldn't want their own zombie friend.

A great read. I look forward to reading the follow-up.

Zombie-Kids is a hair-raising rhyme that give readers a glimpse into the startling and comical life of zombie kids.
After all, "Zombies are people that have feelings too. They liked to be loved just like me and like you."

At night when the rest of us are fast asleep the zombies come out to roam, including the kids. One little boy likes to sneak out after dark in order to play with his zombie friends. They play tag and baseball and even do a little shopping all under the cover of darkness to ensure they don't give humans a fright. "When the sun rises, the zombies are gripped by a sudden desire to head to their crypt." So if your out after dark be certain to look for them, you might just make a new friend.

Readers will have a haunting good time reading Zombie-Kids which will tickle their funny bone and have them howling for more. The illustrations are sure to bring a cackle or two as the zombies shake their bones with old Frankenstein and play a round of eyeball golf.

I highly recommend picking up Zombie-Kids.

"Zombie-Kids" by Julia Dweck is a laugh-a-minute parody of zombies, which goes a long way toward removing the 'horror' from zombies, presenting them as being quite fun. The text is one long poem, which is humorous and meshes quite well with the very engaging illustrations.

I think a lot of adults will like this book, too, but it really is intended for kids. If you have (or know of) a child who is frightened by the idea of zombies, or perhaps has nightmares of a zombie hoard chasing him into a dead end alley, this book will completely change his perception of zombies. From this book, kids will learn to look upon zombies as being just normal people like them, rather than some hideous creature bent on eating their brains.

I think this book would be very well received by virtually all kids, and some of them may carry it around the house with them all day, to stay close to their new zombie friends in the book! This is a great gift idea for ages 3 and up. Go check it out!

My daughter is screwed during the zombie apocalypse - instead of running FROM the zombies, she'll be running TO the zombies. "They just want to be our friends."

This is such a fun book.

I must admit I have a slight obsession with zombies....slight ;) Well that obsession had been passed onto my 3 year old daughter. Zombies (or Yombies as my little calls them) are a frightening subject but the author handles it perfectly by making them silly and funny.

I know some kids books can be a pain to read aloud - not this one. I enjoy reading this aloud - it flows perfectly and the rhyming is great. Definitely our favorite kindle kids books! Highly recommended - just be aware that it is recommended for ages 6+

Simon the pig received an invitation to attend a Halloween party and Jim Mouse’s house. Jim wants no scary costumes or mean tricks. Simon does this to him every year because he loves all things scary. Simon decides to get a scary vampire costume anyway. Then he makes some scary cupcakes and heads off to Jim’s house. He scares little children along the way and thinks it is funny. When he arrives he goes into Jim’s house and can’t find him. This year Jim has a surprise for Simon. Can you guess what it is?

A great book for the Halloween season, or any other time of year. Aside from being about zombies, it also teaches tolerance and acceptance of those different from you, as in this verse:

Zombies are people
that have feelings too
They like to be loved
just like me and like you.

As with Dweck's other books, the rhymes are very easy to read, and lots of fun. She works with fabulous illustrators, and this time is no exception. I plan to share this book with my grandson in the near future, and I'm sure he will enjoy it as much as I have.

My boys are 7, 7, & 8. As I was reading, I wondered if this book may have been written for a little younger audience, BUT the boys absolutely adored it. The rhymes are well written, the illustrations are top-notch, and overall thoroughly entertaining. We highly recommend this book, and any of Julia Dweck's many novels!

This is a cool story about Zombies that I'm sure will grab the interest of the target audience. It's written in a rhyming style which is a fun read.
The illustrations are awesome and look wonderful on an iPad. The story was great fun, except for one page (Loc 44) which I found a tad creepy. Other readers may find that page more amusing than I did. Overall, I'd recommend this book.

The illustrations are ghoulish and dark but the rhyming story provided an entertaining and light look. The zombies here are fun and kid friendly. This is my favorite Dweck book I've picked up to date.

My Five year old is crazy over these books. He finds them engaging, entertaining and really funny. He loves anything gruesome, and this is a fantastic compromise for both him and I. We sit together and re-read lots, he never gets bored. Quite honestly, I enjoy them too ha ha.
