Children of the Fifth Sun by Gareth Worthington is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This book reminds me of a wonderful mix of Michael Crichton, Dan Brown, and Douglas Preston. It has the science, mythology, the globe trotting, the suspense, the global intrigue, and the human emotional factors. This book is so wonderful! I was mad, glowing, sobbing, angry, scared, and resigned, and elated.
Evolution took life from the sea to land but some animals went back to the sea, like the whales. Man had several species at the same time. What if one of those went back to the sea? What if one of those species remains had been found in the ice and had been cloned? What chaos would it bring if the world found out? Should the government tell the world? Who should have it? What would it be like? What should it be used for? I want to add more but don't want to give spoilers.
This book is one I could not stop, This story weaved so many small stories together to make one big great story! I loved it! A seven course meal for my brain with a giant dessert with a cheery on top! I was so satisfied when I finished this story! When I finished reading, I wanted more but felt very full and content. I haven't felt that in a long time! Thanks.

First time novelist Gareth Worthington delivers an exciting sci-fi adventure that also blends elements of spirituality, theology and myth.

Photographer Graham takes an unusual underwater assignment for a surreptitious government agency and all hell breaks loose as the team embarks on an international thriller.

Worthington’s characterization is better than average as he fills his suspenseful narrative with a host of colorful players. The author also mixes in components of conspiracy so fans of modern fiction reminiscent of Dan Brown may like this as well.

A page turner, this is a fast moving and entertaining novel that promises much for this new writer.

*** BTW, check out Worthington’s website where he describes himself as “Scientist. Writer. Muay Thai Fighter.” I should post this on my website: “Folklorist. Book Reviewer. Amateur Golfer.”

*** A free copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review

WOW. Blew me away.

Children of the Fifth Sun was not what I was expecting. It was SO much more.

Evolution. Where do we come from?

A deadly virus.

Intelligent non human life form.

Kelly is a handful, with his flippant comments and sarcasm, but he had become Freya’s handful and someone I would want at my side in times of trouble. At least you know where he stands and that you can always count on him

Amazing. I could not predict the ending, but I loved it.

So….strap yourself in, because this will be an action packed wild ride that takes you round the world in a nail biting, white knuckled, engrossing story.

Stunning. Suspenseful. Intelligent Science Fiction.
I am new to this genre, but having heard the exciting buzz within the literary world, I couldn't resist finding out what all the hype was about!

Pulling no punches, the brilliant mind and craftsmanship of Worthington transported me to a whole other world, turning pages well into the night. Transfixed by the journey through stunning human mythology, and complex characters which became eerily familiar, the storytelling nails science fiction at it's most crucial crossover into suspenseful thriller.

As with all talented authors, I read the final paragraph reluctantly, and was left wanting more.

Intrigue with a fast-paced, dynamic plot keeps you glued to every word in this unique storyline. It is not your typical plot about an ancient race and the fight to control their secrets. Instead, it is a well-thought out novel with charm, wit, and a strong leading character in Kelly Graham. He's the anchor in this fast-paced tale, drawing the reader in and offering a relatable and multi-dimensional character. The non-stop action and wild ride this story delivers is nothing short of breathtaking! A brilliant read!

Amazing read. Enjoyed it very much. Loved the characters. Loved the book.
Loved K'in the gentle alien, or was it an alien? with Kelly and Freya.
It was so different from all the other sci-fi books I have read.
Sci-fi in it's best.

Well what can I say this is a whole lot of story in not a lot of book, this debut novella is jam packed full of action, intrigue, conspiracy, a pinch of potential romance in the offing, and if that isn’t enough a man sized salamander (not as weird as it sounds). The breakneck pacing keeps you hooked and whisks you through the story, neatly weaving together the different threads to a satisfying if somewhat open conclusion, there is second book coming I believe. So why not 5 stars, well it’s pretty simple although the story is thoroughly absorbing the fast pace didn’t leave a lot of time to get to know the main character / characters, this was accentuated by it being a novella but (there is always a but) there is some good character development which I assume will be continued in subsequent books.

In summary this is a solid 4 star novella but probably could have been a 5 star novel! Would I recommend it? Absolutely, there is some major potential in this new pull no punches author, Huahuqui would certainly make an awesome movie and is well worth the time spent reading it!

One of the toughest obstacles when it comes to writing is whether or not you have the ability to portray your story in a way where the reader can see what you as the writer is visualizing. I know personally how difficult that is because of my own background with writing and its technicalities. There wasn't a moment while reading Huahuqui where I felt lost or struggled to understand what was going on because of the excellent details. As crazy as it sounds, I felt as if I was there along for the ride... I initially thought that this book wouldn't be too difficult to read and after completing it, I was right. However, this isn't what I consider as a “mindless” read. Each page was bestowed with copious amounts of research and unlike most of the things that I've read, it really got me into thinking. I believe the main question that any reader would come across while reading this would be about human existence and whether or not you agree with the author. With that said, I thought Huahuqui was beautifully written. The main character Kelly left a permanent smirk on my face with his impressive wit which was seen sporadically throughout. Even though there were hints of humor, I consider Huahuqui as a nail biter which in my opinion is the best kind of book. It's intense and action packed and it gets a well deserved 5 stars (which is something I don't often give). Bravo Dr. Worthington for having such a wonderful imagination and for sharing your story with the world. ***Also, there are two more installments in the series (truthfully I'm not ready to part from Kelly just yet!)

Two of my favorite quotes-

“Sometimes, you have to lose something to find something.”

“The human race is arrogant. We believe that we are the superior organism on this planet. We believe this so much that we are arrogant enough to state God, if he exists, made us in his own image, because of course what other image would he have?”

There are many different belief systems on Earth. However, they each have a common thread of belief, that thousands of years ago a great flood devastated Earth. From this natural disaster, a race of beings dwelled in the oceans and emerged to share its knowledge and culture with humanity. They hope to help save humans from our own selfish need. What are these mysterious creatures? Would they be able to help us?

Kelly Graham is an overly confident egotistical freelance photographer. He specializes in underwater and free diving photography. While on assignment in the Amazon with his best friend, Chris D'Souza, Kelly crosses path with a beautiful woman named Freya Nilsson. She works for a secret deep cover part of the government and enlists Kelly and Chris to help her retrieve an item on the bottom of the sea floor. Kelly agrees to help the seemingly simple request only to be thrown into an international conspiracy.

The novel was an action-packed read. I thought the storyline of ancient species helping humanity to be interesting. I enjoyed reading parts of the story with the K'in and his adventures. Does anyone else think that his photo on the cover looks like a Pokemon? On a side note, I felt like the book was a bit longer than it needed to be. I felt the last 175 pages or so should have been left for another book. Overall, it was a good read for people who like sci-fi and action books.

Hold your breath people, the dive down the ocean floor is about a thousand feet deep and there’s no backing out.

When self-loving, self-admiring, self-absorbed photographer Kelly Graham was (dragged) hired to retrieve something down the deep underwater. he was in for the big shock of his life. There’s something weird and inexplicable happening about that project and before Kelly and his friends Chris and Victoria knew it, they were far too involved in an alien subterfuge drawing blind fleeting gaze, succesfully scraping ones’ belief about human evolution.

This book is brilliant, jam-packed with elements of mystery, anthropology (studying ancient race and evolution as such), conspiracy, politics, and intrigue. I myself got involved with my own emotions and doubted everything I was taught about regarding human race. Gareth Worthington’s writing is efficient, brilliant and deep, plus very much engaging and mystifying at the same time. He built a world that not only served the story with purpose but also gave his characters varied in-depth specifications that convinced us readers enough that we think we are seeing what we’re supposed to see. Children of the Fifth Sun is a must read, highly recommended sci-fi thriller. Brace yourselves when you read this, and remember, when you’re a thousand feet deep down this beautiful story, take only pictures, leave only bubbles.

These are the easiest 5 stars I have ever gave a book. Wow what a ride. Gosh this was such an amazing read and I loved every bit of it. I never knew I will actually cry on a sci fi book, but that ending was just so unexpected and got all the emotions out of me. I felt so many things while reading this incredible book and I also learned so many things about...hell everything. I feel like fucking genious now. I know this is just a fiction but it was so well written and researched that you would totally think it might be real. The author for sure did a very good job with it. Brilliant.
I loved Kelly and Freya characters. Kelly was my absolute favorite. He was funny, sarcastic, cocky, clever and he had such a good heart. Impossible not fall for him.
And Freya was such a strong woman and I admire her for absolutely everything she did.
This book it's a sci fi, but also so much more and I could totally recommend it for people who have never read this genre. Just go with it. Trust me. It can affect you in so many ways.
For me too this is not usually the genre I go for but here and there I like to read it and I am always blown away by those authors who can come up with those amazing stories. Well done to this author. He managed to keep my interest on the book the whole time and I wasn't bored at all. I really would love to see it as a movie. Who knows... maybe one day.
Over all it was a great read and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

3.5 stars. I've seen a bunch of reviews that refer to a short novella, but my review is for the 400+ page novel not just one portion of the story. This is the first book by Gareth Worthington I have read, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a interestingly different concept of the 2012 "end of the world" scenario. This is a standalone with no cliffhanger ending. There is graphic violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all info here. The author did a good job of explaining what is going on and describing the settings of the story. The characters, even though I couldn't stand some of them, were well written and multidimensional. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and chose to leave a review for other readers.

I took off with it , and the lore just blew me away at how it seamlessly blended with the story. Definitely a reread over & over again. Looking forward to the next one.

I enjoyed this novel more than most because of the characters and what the author has written to craft them with full-blown personalities. The most winsome of all is the gentle creature who has a kind heart and is like a large puppy. The humans are all of varying degrees of, well, just humanness. In spite of that, I cared about some and wished some would just go away. Of course, that diversity and the way characters play off each other is what makes a story work. Later, enter the heavy, and I mean really heavy. Another creature with opposite leanings to the first one we know is so torn within his temperament that he is indeed fearsome. Yet, in the end, like all heavies should, he has some redeeming qualities. It's a fantastical tale and all seemed quite likely given the fact that it is science fiction.

I must admit that after reading book 1, Huahuqui, by Gareth, I was totally looking forward to reading book 2 in the series. Huaquero did not let me down. Kelly and Freya now find themselves traversing across Egypt, India and finally Russia in search of what they hope will bring the end to world disaster. What I like about Gareth's writing is that in so few words, he gives you the breadth of a character. In this book, we learn more about what makes the central characters, and even some of the secondary characters work. That’s a challenging feet for sci-fiction as this style of writing is more reminiscent, to me, of good fiction. But one does have to have some knowledge of Humanities to read Huaquero in order to keep up with the intense influx of the history of mankind and its fascination with “ancient aliens.” Overall, I was thoroughly entertained with this book as I was with Huahuqui. I do wish it had ended with the letter because it was so poignant and wrapped up things nicely, however. But as with all series, the writer must lead us into the next adventure. And this third one is probably going to be the most frightening, yet adventurous one of all. Huaquero (Huahuqui #2) by Gareth Worthington

I received this book as part of Goodreads First Reads programme.

I was a little wary when I first received this book through the post; how could i get stuck into a story that was only 146 pages long? Even whilst reading the first half of the book, my fears were that I wouldn't be able to develop a bond with the characters but I hold my hands up; I was wrong! Somehow, Gareth Worthington has managed to weave just the right amount of character development into an action packed storyline that leaves me wanting to get my hands on the sequel.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kelly Graham's witty and laid back attitude, especially with his best friend Chris D'Souza. The relationship between them was one I would have enjoyed to continue reading about, so I felt quite disappointed when it came to quite an abrupt halt. On the other hand, I guess this is what the aim of the game is, as it helped me to understand Kelly's anger and frustration later in the story.

I must say I adored V - what an intriguing creature - where can I get one? ;o)

All in all, Huahuqui was a fascinating read. Gareth Worthington provided more than enough detail in this story for me to get my teeth into, and I look forward to reading the sequel

After reading Huahuqui, the first in this trilogy, I had been eagerly awaiting the sequel; let me tell you I was not disappointed!!

I wasn't sure where the author could take the story after the explosive first novel, and I was worried that it may be one of those let me see if I can drag this out, make a bit more money, but have a half arsed storyline kind of sequels (The Lost TV series comes to mind(sorry I know I should probably compare to a book series but I can't help but compare to TV/film because they would make an awesome movie)) however this is in no-way a lame sequel!
The author clearly learned a great deal from writing his first novel and the fire has most definitely been lit in his belly as the action has ramped up ten-fold, it literally does not stop, has you on the edge of your seat in every chapter. I love those moments in a book when you have to read with one eye slightly closed as you are not sure if it's going to go the way you want it to!! The characters are rich; with so much depth- you can't help but attach yourself to them, there are a few shockers in this book too, I won't spoil the plot but needless to say I was in tears at some points.
I love it, can't wait for the final book to be released. Congratulations to the author- awesome job, worth the 5 stars!l

Just as you thought you could catch your breath after finishing the first book Huahuqui, the sequel, arrives and throws you right back into the action. I was really looking forward to this book and I was certainly not disappointed. The pacing is just as fast as the first book, this author once again showing his flair for mixing fact and fiction seamlessly. But, where this book surpasses the first is in the depth of the characters. We really get to see more of their personalities what makes them tick and some of the events that made them who they are. Even more impressive is the way Worthington has weaved this information into the story without detracting from the pace. I had mixed feelings about the ending (keep a tissue handy), you’ll know what I mean when you get there, but it absolutely fit the characters and I love an author who stays true to their characters.

I thought this was going to be the end of the story but fear not I have it on good authority (Gareth himself) that book three is on its way and after reading the epilogue it sounds like a must read, dark and intriguing. I would highly recommend both books, especially if you’re looking for short punchy holiday reads, make sure you put on the sun cream before you start, because you won’t be able to put them down!

A thriller that spans Geographies and a kaleidoscope of multiple disciplines ranging from mythology, to religion to science fiction to cutting edge genetics, Children of the Fifth Sun is a racy novel that whizzes through the wilderness of Vladivostok to the hot desert of Nevada.
Kelly Graham, a famed deep diving specialist and his closest friend Chris find themselves surreptitiously hauled away by a team of three. General Benjamin, Agent Freya Nilsson and Tremaine have a task for Kelly - the retrieval of an object from the deep sea which might have the potential to save the Planet from vice and vicissitudes. This exercise involves an incursion into the domain of China. This act sets off a bizarre chain of events involving a deadly hemorrhagic virus, a benevolent half-man half-aquatic creature called Ki'in, and a dangerous Triad gang leader with equally dangerous obsessions.

Will Kelly and Freya succeed in making the world a better place?

Insane! What Gareth did here was incredible! This author took a global look at America, China, and Russia, and added a species from another era into the mix, to create a well-researched novel of suspense, intrigue, with dashing individuals.

The characters travel the world on a unique mission while trying to stay out of the line of fire as rogue government agencies from several different countries try to stop them. It's a wild ride from California to Peru, from Egypt to Siberia.

The amount of research put into this novel is on par with a Michael Crichton novel. The main character, Kelly Graham, reminded me of Dirk Pitt from Clive Cussler's novels.

Overall, an incredible read and a book I'm recommending.

A tour de force bringing together myth, science, religion and civilization

Once you read the author’s biography you see him throughout the book. You need a background like his to conceive of a story like this. It is at once very dark and very hopeful. So many legends come together to create magic.

“Kelly Graham is a narcissistic self-assured freelance photographer specializing in underwater assignments. While on a project in the Amazon with his best friend, Chris D'Souza, a mysterious and beautiful government official, Freya Nilsson, enters Kelly’s life and turns it upside down. Her simple request to retrieve a strange object from deep underwater puts him in the middle of an international conspiracy. A conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history.”

I just love imperfect characters, I believe I have mentioned that in other reviews and it’s just so true! “Children of the Fifth Sun” by Gareth Worthington certainly has those in abundance and they really make this story come alive.

Kelly Graham is one of those flawed characters. He’s a sarcastic self-centered, self-absorbed, risk taker who seems to have a bit of a death wish. At least that is what he appears to be on the outside but he’s so much more underneath his steely cold exterior and that is precisely what makes me like him so much. I ate up his journey of self-reflection and self-questioning like a decadent dessert as I experienced the evolution of this character thanks to his unexpected encounter with K’in.

K’in is a revelation to humanity; a link to humanity’s past, present and...future. Now, I’m not going to give much away about this character because I feel you really need to read the story to allow K’in to get under your skin and experience how this character warms you. Suffice it to say....you will love K’in as much as I did.

And of course, I musn’t forget Freya Nilsson. Freya is the female version of Kelly. The sparks definitely fly between Freya and Kelly as they navigate an emotional push-me-pull-you while they traverse the globe on an extraordinary adventure. Will these two ever get out of their own way and manage to come together or won’t they? Weeeellll, I’m not saying! That is something you will have to find out for yourself but I will admit that I was certainly ready to reach through the pages to smack their heads together and say “knock it off you two and get it together!” But...I really enjoyed Freya; she’s a kick ass character who epitomizes the phrase “Girl Power”!

So, as I said there are some really interesting characters to sink your teeth into. But it takes more than interesting characters to make a well-crafted story doesn’t it? The pace of the story and the authors’ writing style add so much to it as well and this story has that in spades.

I found the tempo of this story kept me feverishly turning the pages, anxious to see what would happen next. So I did something I rarely force myself to do when reading...I slowed down. Not because I was afraid I might miss something; I simply wanted to make the story last longer. You know it’s a good book when you don’t want the story to end....not yet, just....not... quite... yet.

Mr. Worthington’s scenes were brilliantly descriptive, allowing me to really immerse myself into the story and he managed to drag emotions out of me and yeah...I was blubbering fool at one point. (Note to reader...it’s really hard to read with tears in your eyes, soooo keep some tissue handy....just in case.)

What more could I ask for in a book? This story is action packed, beautifully written and easy to get into. But the bonus for me was this, by the end I felt as though the author had related a profound story that I think we can all relate to....as we each search to find our own connections and meaning in a world where humanity often seems to be growing more distant and cold.

So, would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Without hesitation....absofreakinloutely!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I always have been fascinated by the Mayan culture and that their calendar ended in 2012. Most people thought it would be the end of the world. This story dives into these apocalyptic endings and gives a broad spectrum of what could have happen.

I was taken aback by all the cursing in the book. Sometimes I found it funny but for most of the time, it was just a bit too much. Not that I have an aversion against this kind of language.

Even though we follow the lives of other characters in the book, the main story revolves around Kelly and Freya.

Kelly is taken against his will by a secret government team that wants him to retrieve an object from the ocean floor. The reason is because diving equipment seems break down when it comes near the object. The moment that he picks up the object from the ocean floor, everything goes to hell. He finds himself at the mercy of this secret government and what he is about to witness even surpases his wildest dreams.

Even though the author portrays Kelly as a no brainer personality with a nick for profanity language, it seems this is all a façade to keep people away from him. Because he thinks he is bad luck as people around him seems to be all dying.

I also love the character and history of Freya, outer shell hard and military but underneath is a rough diamond that seems to fall for this foolish Kelly.

I love the little hints and gems about the history of Egypt, Mayan and so in the story and the endeavor around the world to save the world from chaos.

There were actually very good plot twists, I recommend this book for ancient mysteries that they unravel and the action.

I received a free copy of this book through BookSirens in exchange for an honest, voluntary review. Also, I see some other references to novellas and/or multiple parts of the story. To clarify the edition, I read a review edition of the book that was 415 pages (according to BookSirens).

I am really conflicted with how to rate and describe this book. It is like a condensed version of the show Ancient Aliens with a mix of concepts from the movies 2012 and The Shape of Water (among other concepts/theories). When we are first introduced to K'in and what he is, my first thoughts went to the creature in The Shape of Water.

The execution was a little disappointing. I really love the topics the book delves into, but it was not the page turner I was hoping for. It reminds me a bit of a writing assignment I had to do in high school. We were given a list of phrases and nouns and had to use as many as we could in a story. It was like all of the ancient alien theories were on a list and had to be used in someway in the story. The redeeming quality of this book is that it is action packed; in fact, you are into the action in the first chapter or two. I found that the book picked up further down the line as well.

Because of the direction the book goes, this book could have ended around chapter 28 or 29 and everything after that could have been a whole separate book. The segue from chapter 29 to 30 (one year later) seemed a little awkward to me especially since the connections to the all of the theories presented are never fully explained or connected. It seemed like one theory would be talked about for a couple of pages then suddenly a new theory is being talked about for a couple pages with a somewhat connection to the first theory then another theory is dropped that may or may not have anything to do with the first two. The story essentially takes you from theories like Earth Crust Displacement to DNA splicing and back again. While writing this review, I really struggled with trying to explain what I mean in words. Maybe I watch Ancient Aliens too much.

So, back to the rating. I am really conflicted. I found parts of the book to slow down a bit, but I did enjoy the book overall. I almost never give half stars, but this time I would give this book 3.5 stars rounded up to a 4 as I am definitely interested in reading the sequel, Children of the Fifth Sun: Echelon.

Awesome Epic ride!! A fast paced, action packed thriller interweaved cleverly with popular scientific theories.
(No spoilers in this review)
The story follows the accidental adventures of Kelly Graham, a self-assured man with a broken past that leads him to risk his life at every opportunity. Kelly is a Molotov cocktail of a man who runs head first toward danger throughout the book, keeping the action coming think and fast.
With current and ancient superpower, all crossing each other paths trying to solve an amazing puzzle of an advanced, powerful and ancient creature. The conspiracy theories, twist and turns come thick and fast with an amazing world tour of locations. The book is cleverly writing to keep many players and themes running alongside each other.
I am happy with the authors use of movie screenplay style for this book. Sometimes I feel we may be lacking some depth and details, but this writing style keeps the book ticking over without getting bogged down in details. The ending leaves me with some many questions, wanting more which is both frustrating and exciting. We will see a follow up only the author will know, but I would be happy to buy it. Although this book can remain a standalone, I feel more adventures and answers are still to come.
The main baddie who slowly worms his way out of the woodwork behind all the cloak and daggers is very scary and horrific person, I loved him. No softie to be messed with. The author doesn’t shy away from collateral damage keeping you guessing at who or what might be next.

It's not often that I come across a main character in a book who has particular traits that gets on my bits. Kelly Graham is that character. A selfish, egotistic man. However, he is good at what he does. Ain't that usually the way?

Once I ignored what niggled me and actually got into the story, I was hooked. It's different from the usual stuff and it's obviously been very well researched. I maintain that Kelly's character became more 'human' after bonding with a certain animal. Having said that, I fell in love with the same animal very easily, and I'm sure other readers will too.

Kelly does 'evolve' into a more rounded, likeable character, and even Freya sees his good traits that were VERY well hidden previously. I defy anyone not to have tears in their eyes at certain parts of the book, particularly the end. However much I did not want this story to end, I was gutted when it did. I sincerely hope that Dr Worthington has more stories to tell us.

Excellent concept, great story, well written, and both heartwarming and heartbreaking. (You'll see what I mean.) Once you pick this up, you'll struggle to put it down. I loved, loved, loved this so much. A whirlwind of adventure, authenticity, action, and imagination. Did I mention that I loved it?
