Georgios Vizyenos is one of Greece’s best-loved writers. "Moskov Selim" is set in Thrace, a corner of Europe where Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria meet. Selim is a Muslim name, yet "Moskov" implies that he is a Russian. Vizyenos’ fascinating and moving story is set during a time of constant wars between Russians and Turks whose outcome would decide the future of south-east Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria were becoming independent of the Ottoman empire, while Greece was to gain huge territories at the empire’s expense. Although Istanbul would remain in Turkey, it would no longer be the seat of the Ottoman Sultan, who, as caliph, was the leader of the world’s Muslims. Vizyenos’ story evokes a time when Greeks and Turks could share each other’s joys and pains despite the hostile relations between their governments. Listening to the protagonist’s life story, the narrator of "Moskov Selim" discovers that this Turk is a kindred spirit, despite the gulf of nationality and religion that separates them. About the author

Georgios Vizyinos (Greek: Γεώργιος Βιζυηνός) was a Greek prose writer and poet, one of the most significant figures of Greek literature. He was born Georgios Syrmas in Vizyi, Eastern Thrace, on March 8, 1849. He was sent at a young age by his parents to Constantinople to become a clothesmaker but instead chose to study first religion and later literature.

In 1873, he published his first collection of poems "Ποιητικά πρωτόλεια". The following year, Vizyinos published his epic poem "Codrus". His third collection was originally entitled "Ares-Mares-Koukounares" but later re-titled "Breezes of the Bosphorus". All three works received awards for poetry.

In 1883, Vizyinos started writing in prose. In a span of merely fifteen months (1883 - 1884) he wrote and published five short novels in the magazine Hestia, thus opening the way for a new literary form and at the same time demonstrating unique thematic, narrative and structural inventiveness. The short stories "Who was my Brother’s Murderer?", "The only Voyage of his Life", "The Consequences of an Old Story" and "Moskov-Selim" deal with the controversial subject of relations and the terms of coexistence among Greeks, Slavs and Turks in the Balkans, as well as the dialogue between the Greeks of Greece and the Greeks of the Ottoman Empire and the Diaspora, and also between Europe and modern and ancient Hellenism. The symbolic function of language and the self-referring function of literature are reflected mainly in the short stories "Between Piraeus and Naples" and "The only Voyage of his Life".
Vizyinos was forced to work as a high school teacher following the death of his chief mentor, Georgios Zarifis in 1884.

In 1892, he was stricken with mental illness and was admitted to Dromokaitios asylum, near Athens. He died there four years later on April 15, 1896.

Ένα από τα αριστουργήματα της ελληνικής πεζογραφίας! Το αγαπημένο σίγουρα από Βιζυηνό, γραμμένο με το απαράμιλλο ύφος του. Στο διήγημα αυτό διεισδύει στην ανθρώπινη ψυχή με τρόπο συγκλονιστικό , τρυφερό και ανεπανάληπτο... Ό,τι και να πει κανείς γι αυτό το διήγημα δεν είναι αρκετό! :')

Το διήγημα πραγματεύεται τις αντιξοότητες της ζωής ενός Τούρκου, του Σελήμ που αδικήθηκε και ταλαιπωρήθηκε ιδιαίτερα. Γιος πλούσιου μπέη της Πόλης και στερνοπαίδι ζει περίεργα παιδικά χρόνια αφού η μάνα του έχοντας καημό που δεν απέκτησε ποτέ κόρη τον έντυνε με γυναικεία ρούχα, τον έβαφε και τον μεγάλωνε ως κορίτσι μέσα στο χαρέμι! Εκείνος αποζητούσε πάντα τον πατέρας του ο οποίος αφενός τους είχε παρατήσει για μια Τουρκάλα αφετέρου έδειχνε αδυναμία στον πρωτότοκο του γιο. Όταν αυτός ο μεγαλύτερος γιος εμφανισιακά ιδιος ο πατέρας αλλά μέσα του πολύ φοβισμένος κληρώθηκε να υπηρετήσει ως στρατιώτης, λιποτάκτησε. Ο Σελήμ ζήτησε εθελοντικά να αντικαταστήσει τον αδερφό του και φεύγει για το μέτωπο. Παρά τη γενναιότητα του όχι μόνο τον αδικούν στο στρατό όταν επιστρέφει μαθαίνει άσχημα νέα: τον αδερφό του τον σκότωσαν μια που ο πατέρας του τον είχε καταγγέλλει ως λιποτάκτη, η μητέρα του έχει πεθάνει, ο πατέρας του κατάντησε μέθυσος και χάνει όλη την περιουσία τους που την σπατάλησε η νέα σύζυγος. Κατηγορεί το Σελήμ ο οποίος πάει φυλακή και ξαναπάει στρατιώτης. Ακολουθεί ένας γάμος όμως το καθήκον πάλι τον καλεί. Βρίσκεται αιχμάλωτος συνειδητοποιώντας ότι ο Ρώσος δεν είναι ο εχθρός που νόμιζε. Επιστρέφοντας μαθαίνει πως η γυναίκα και τα παιδιά του πέθαναν...Χαμένος και αδικημένος αφηγείται την ιστορία του σε ένα Έλληνα...

Είναι ένα διήγημα ξεχωριστό. Με κούρασαν λίγο οι πολλές τούρκικες λέξεις. Το βρήκα βαθιά ψυχαναλυτικό, ενώ παράλληλα δίνει σημαντικές ιστορικές και εθνολογικές πληροφορίες για την τουρκική αλλά και τη ρωσική νοοτροπία. Αποπνέει έντονα την ματαιότητα των πολεμικών εχθροπραξιών και ίσως και την ματαιότητα της ίδιας της ζωής όταν δεν υπάρχουν ελεύθερες, ισότιμες σχέσεις σε κάθε επίπεδο.

"El té que hiervo dentro no es para ti. Lo hiervo así por consuelo, cuando me pongo a reflexionar. Me gusta cuando me siento solo a escuchar como buebujea el agua."

Si por algo me ha sorprendido esta lectura es porque me he dado cuenta de que Viziinós, siendo escritor griego, tiene una capacidad de comprehender y sentirse identificado con el enemigo, con el turco. Es una lectura muy interesante y bastante bonita de un soldado turco que añora a la Rusia en la que fue prisionero, algo similar a la imagineria del Cáucaso que los rusos habían construido como un paraíso perdido y salvaje. Me resulta interesante esta mirada hacia el otro que se entreteje continuamente entre el sujeto nuclear del relato (el protagonista o el propio Selim) con el sujeto subalterno (el turco, el ruso) y cómo esto no sólo afecta a las personas, sino también a los espacios en los que convive.

Relato muy recomendado para ver esta dinámica tan poco común de la literatura neogriega del romanticismo

Η ψυχογραφική διάσταση του έργου του Βιζυηνού είναι αυτή που κάνει τα διηγήματά του να ξεχωρίζουν. Ακόμα και για τα δικά του δεδομένα, όμως, εδώ καταφέρνει να φτάσει σε ένα πολύ υψηλό βαθμό διείσδυσης στα άδυτα της ψυχής του ήρωα. Ο "τρελλός άνθρωπος" -σύμφωνα με τα λεγόμενα του συνοδοιπόρου του Βιζυηνού- προσεγγίζεται με έναν τρόπο που τον καθιστά προσιτό στον αναγνώστη, που κατανοεί τον πόνο του και το δράμα του. Αδικημένος από την οικογένεια και την πατρίδα του, διχασμένος ανάμεσα στην Τουρκία και τη Ρωσία, το μυαλό και την καρδιά, την επιθυμία και το καθήκον, ο Μοσκώβ Σελήμ αποτελεί μία τραγική φιγούρα, η οποία μέσα από το έργο του Βιζυηνού αποκτά οικουμενικό χαρακτήρα και αγγίζει τον οποιοδήποτε ανεξαρτήτως εθνικότητας, καταγωγής κλπ. Η μόνη παρατήρηση που θα μπορούσα να κάνω είναι ότι σε κάποια σημεία θα μπορούσε να χρησιμοποιήσει πιο λιτά εκφραστικά μέσα, ώστε να επικεντρωθεί ακόμα περισσότερο στο ανθρώπινο δράμα. Συνολικά, 4.5/5.

Πραγματικά ένα από τα αριστουργήματα της ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας, το οποίο μάλιστα μπορεί εύκολα να βρεθεί και δωρεάν στο διαδίκτυο. Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αναγκάστηκα να διαβάσω λόγω σχολικής εργασίας, στην οποία είχα περιορισμένο χρόνο και έτσι η αρχικά περίπλοκη γλώσσα που επικρατεί στο βιβλίο, διότι είναι γραμμένο σε παλαιότερη μορφή της γλώσσας, μου φάνηκε εκνευριστική. Παρόλα αυτά καθώς συνέχισα να διαβάζω το εντυπωσιακό βιβλίο αυτό και ειδικά όταν έφτασα στην ιστορία του Σελήμ, έγινε κατευθείαν ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου βιβλία. Η συγκινητική ιστορία του Σελήμ, το ενδιαφέρον του αφηγητή και η αγάπη για την πατρίδα του ακόμα και ύστερα από τόσες αντιξοότητες που του προκάλεσε είναι τρομερή. Ενώ όταν φτάνει η στιγμή του θανάτου του προκαλείται στον αναγνώστη μαζί με την συγκίνηση και ένα αίσθημα ολοκλήρωσης. Πραγματικά το βιβλίο αυτό έχει την αίσθηση κάποιας ιστορίας που σου έλεγε ο παππούς σου ένα βράδυ στο μισοσκόταδο. Πραγματικά και χωρίς καμία αμφιβολία αριστουργηματικό έργο

Jeg nød at læse Moskov Selim. Det er en god historie, velkomponeret og velfortalt. Den rummer både en elementært underholdende fortælling og fine reflektioner over personlig og national identitet fortalt på et interessant historisk bagtæppe.

Ανάμεσα στα πιο ωραία διηγήματα του Βιζυηνού αν λάβει κανείς υπόψιν του ότι όταν γράφτηκε ο συγγραφέας ήταν κλεισμένος στο ψυχιατρείο. Ωστόσο είναι συγκλονιστικό, σε κρατά σε συνεχή αγωνία για το τι θα γίνει και πιστεύω αξίζει να διαβαστεί.

A compelling short story from one of Greece's greatest classic authors. The narrative follows the tragic life of Selim, the third son of a cruel Turkish noble. This tale of loss and false hopes is criminally underrated. I only found out about it on my second year in Lyceum since it was part of the curriculum for Greek lit. The story's choice of main character in itself is ground-breaking, since Greek lit of the time was geared towards the glorification of ethnocentric nationalism and the portrayal of Turks as one dimensional intruders. The author gives an excellent psychological profile to the character and the description of his hardships are not overtly dramatic but feel genuinely tragic. *Minor Spoiler:

There is no redemption at the end and no divine justice. Tragically as he lived, tragically he dies and all people that did him wrong face no repercussions. I guess this was the most hardline realist approach the author could take. Many of the author's works are semi autobiographical and in this text he implies that he actually met Selim, which make the story even more harrowing.
