Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin (Russian: Гавриил Романович Державин) was one of the seminal figures in Russian literature. He developed russian poetic language, first discovered by Lomonosov and Sumarokov and was precursor to Pushkin's poetry and language reform. Derzhavin was also a statesman and patriot. Many of his odes are dedicated to empress Ekaterina II, statesmen, Russia and the idea of State in general. He also wrote philosophical and lyrical poems and memoirs.
