Reread: 12/31/23 The story starts off with an upsetting scene of Lady Amalie De Vera being beaten and brutally raped. Luckily, a soldier hides her in the tunnels of her brother's castle. Her cowardly brother was allegedly in a sexual relationship with Richard II and had to flee to escape Henry Bolingbroke, leaving his vulnerable sister to his enemies' mercy.
On the day Weston arrives, he sees a beautiful woman plunge into a frozen pond. He is shocked and heartbroken that this beautiful angel is trying to kill herself. He rescues Amalie twice from herself. Weston will not let her wonder from his side. He is scared she will try it again. Slowly, he begins to fall in love with Amalie.
One day, Amalie leaves and takes sanctuary in a nearby convent. Weston visits every day for 3 months but is turned away every time. On his last visits, he sneaks into the garden and finds Amalie. He proposes to her, but Weston doesn't know her shameful secret. She is carrying her rapiest's child, but Weston doesn't care, he loves her anyway 😍
4 blissful years later, the couple are happy with their 2 children. Weston is a wonderful father who spoils his children, especially his eldest daughter 🥰. Soon, word comes that Weston's grandfather has died, and he has inherited the baronetcy. Now, Weston must face his own demons and a mother he hates.
The 2nd half of the book is froth with danger, secrets, sorrow, vengeance, a brutal showdown with the villain, and a beloved character's death. 😢
I really loved this book the 1st time I read it. On my 2nd read, the story didn't hold my interest as much. Still, the MC were great, and I loved the children! The kids were portrayed very realistically ( an extra star for that!). I could relate to their parents' frustration with raising toddlers. (Boy, could I!).
I do think their romance was a bit too quick. Still, the couple were delightful! The secondary characters were well done as well. I don't think KLV has ever written a bad book🤔..... Oh, wait! There is one: The Dark Lord. Yea, I still can't root for a romance with a H who commits mass genocide. That's just not for me. Needless to say, I don't recommend that book!
All in all, this was an excellent story, and I would definitely recommend it!
Read: 7/17/20 Good. Though the heroine suffers, she is able to recover thanks to the hero. He was wonderful. It's one of my favorite of her books.
Please do not take my 2 stars as a negative response to the book. A 2 stars rating is neutral in my book. I cannot say that I liked it (3 stars), nor can I say that I disliked it (1 star). So I am in between, 2 stars.
Kathryn Le Veque is a prominent figure in the medieval HR sub-genre. Being a medieval history nut, I should by default love her books. But I often find her books bland. Her heroes are usually Lancelot wannabes. We all love a honorable man, but in Kathryn Le Veque's book, being honorable seems to equate being a sap.
That being said, I found the characters in this book inconsistent. Weston was supposed to dislike unchaste women to the point that people were surprised when he did not condemn Amalie for being raped. But he never really struggled with what happened to Amalie. We are told that he was outraged, but it lasted only for the length of the sentence. Amalie was equally odd. I wasn't quite sure who she was. In the first half she was the rape victim, the second half a much adored wife who threw hissy fits.
The dialogues in this book were repetitive. I wonder, was it necessary to have Weston's mother tell her reason of marrying Weston's "grandfather" twice, once to Amalie and once to Weston? She used almost the exact words too. I wonder, did Kathryn Le Veque needed to fulfill her word count? And yes, you read that right: Weston's mother married his grandfather. As for why and what really happened, I suppose one should read the book to find out.
The first half of the book was alright. As sappy as the story is, at least Weston and Amalie had a story. They got married around mid book and all of a sudden, fast forward a few years they were married with 2 spoiled brats. I am not certain why Kathryn Le Veque wrote it that way. The story completely lost its focus after she steered the story toward "why does Weston hate his mother?" and "the rapist returns to Amalie's life." The 2 kids did nothing for the stories. They were even annoying at times.
Not a winner, but then, I should have known. I never much cared for Arthurian tales.
Long and emotional but so worth it! UPDATE: I have now read four books by this author and I love her. I'm trying to pace myself so I don't read her books to fast because I want to savor them. I can't urge you enough to try her books. I hope this author has many more books to come!
I cant believe I was able to read this book for free. I will gladly pay to read her other books! There are parts that will make you cringe and defiantly a few spots you might cry in. But most all good books have that. The story takes place over a span of four years or so, and I don't usually enjoy stories like that. But in this story I did simply because you got to grow with the characters and watch them build their lovely family. SPOILER: I didn't enjoy the two deaths that happened towards the end of the book. I felt there was no need for it, and it took away from a lovely ending. There was enough harshness in the book without having to add to it. Other than that it, its almost a perfect story, and I can't wait to read another. Im so excited I found this author, you have to check her out!
Interesting, no real conflict between the hero and heroine, but lots of external conflicts. This book has plenty of action and lots of emotion. It does skip over years at times to move the story forward. Happy reading!
Couldn’t finish. Tried numerous times but just couldn’t get into it. Started out ok in what seemed to be an interesting premise, but the writing just wasn’t ..
3,5 rounded to 4 In this medieval romance Lady Amalie was abandoned by her brother at the family’s castle and ends up being raped by the officer who takes possession of the property. Violated and pregnant, Amalie looses faith in life and tries desperately to kill herself. In the meantime, the officer who raped her is removed and Sir. Weston comes in his place, an honorable and quite strict man. He saves her twice from suicide and ends up having to review his tight concepts on virginity and love. The story is well written and I like the way it flows. My only BUT is that the HEA happens at the 50% mark and after that only peripheric questions are addressed at the remaining pages. My first book from this author and I guess I will read more from her when I am again in the mood to read Medieval.
Perception is the key. Perception is the key to everything; not only the crux of this story but also life in general. The acuity in which people see social intercourse; men the actions and opinions of men and children’s in the proceedings of an adult world, haven’t changed much since the Middle Ages. What seems to be isn’t necessarily the way it is when all the facts are known and years of misconceptions can devastate lives, loves and families. Amalie Leighton Rossington de Vere is left behind to face the consequences when her brother, Robert, flees his holdings from his enemies. Sir John Sorrell, a knight sent to occupy Hedingham Castle, abuses and rapes Amalie. Her nightmare at his hands is short but both physically and mentally devastating. Sir John is soon replaced by another knight, Sir Weston de Royans, who takes the Lady Amalie under his protection. His hands are more than full in protecting the lady; from herself as she was determined to end her life and escape the shame her brother’s enemies had wrought upon her. Sir Weston’s tenacity and perseverance in convincing the Lady Amalie that the shame and blame rested not with her but with the dishonourable man that violated her. Soon a love developed between the two where trust, understanding and compromise are keys to their relationship. Soon the roles reverse and, the now Lady Amalie de Royans, change the perceptions Weston had held for most of his life and revenge is a questionable premise for a happy future. Their two spoiled children, Colton and Aubria, caused me to issue oaths under my breath with their antics and behaviour. Historical novels occasionally depict a certain event or replicate a particular time but, ever so often, a story incorporates all the essential elements as this one does. Feel the damp uncomfortably cold and wet English weather, see the picturesque forested hills and dales, smell the aromas (both good and bad) from a primitive time, witness the color and pageantry of the tournament and experience the danger and uncertainty in a time when fortunes were made and lives lost on the whim of a lord or monarch. This is history in all its ugliness and beauty this is a reading experience you won’t want to miss. I think this tale will appeal as much to the masses; as it does to me.
I am a Kathryn Le Veque fan. I've enjoyed several of her books. This one was not my favorite. At times I felt the era read more regency than medieval. The wedding they attended was one of these times. To me, if its all about social status, rumors, and fashion.... it's regency. The characters although well-developed took extreme turns in their behavior. There were quite a few grammar errors but not enough to take away from the story. The two main characters and their children frustrated me w/their behavior at times. All said, I still gave the book 4 stars because I've read the author's other work so maybe this was just a fluke.
Predictable. 14th century England in the time of chivalrous knights, and not so chivalrous knights. Amalie suffers a violent rape and beating at the hands of a knight who was garrison commander of her brother's castle. As a result, she becomes pregnant.
Along comes Weston, the next garrison commander. He falls in love with her and ultimately wins fair lady. The story progresses with their fairy tale life until the knight, Sorrell, who brutalized Amalie, comes back into their lives. What plays out is anticipated.
Not a challenging read, entertaining, but predictable.
Another Le Veque hit for me, I've found surprisingly few misses with this wonderful author! This is a very intense and emotional story which clearly spells out how little control women, even high born women, would have over keeping themselves safe during the middle ages. It's also a story of the transformative and healing power of love. As ever in a Le Veque book the main characters are surrounded by wonderful secondary characters, and the children are exceptionally well drawn!
I read to just over half and called it. I really don't like to NOT finish a book, but there are too many good books in the queue to remain reading one that hasn't grabbed me halfway through.
The characters are likable enough, and the story isn't horrible; but the writing lacks style and the story (the first half anyway) is repetitive and, well, like reading about paint drying.
Depending on your definition of "clean", I would almost consider this a clean romance. There are two very brief, not all that descriptive love scenes that are over in a matter of paragraphs. Otherwise this is just a simple story of two people meeting, falling in love and building a life together.
Another great book written by Kathryn Le Veque!! Amalie and Weston had secrets that they kept to themselves, but they worked through them and their love for each other was an everlasting love.
Sir Weston de Royans has chivalry coursing through his veins. Extremely handsome with deep blue eyes, he is pious, strict with an ironclad code of beliefs, this powerful huge knight does not believe in weakness, but this is all about to change when he takes over as Commander of the Garrison at Hedingham Castle. The extremely beautiful Lady Amara de Vere has been repeatedly raped and almost beaten to death, and attempts to kill herself because of a secret she is harbouring, but she is saved by Sir Weston. When Weston looks into her beautiful green eyes, he feels a compassion like never before, he sees this little woman's pain, anguish and shame, and as he spends more time with her, he realises she has bravery, strength, intelligence, and compassion and his strict code of ethics melts away. And so begins an enormously gentle and loving romance that will melt your heart. But Weston has secrets and emotional turmoils of his own and as he inherits his dead grandfather's titles, his whole world explodes as danger, plots and family secrets crack open decades of deceit. Kathryn Le Veque holds your attention from the beginning to the very last page of this beautifully written book. She will have you smiling and then crying all in the same chapter, and the characters are wonderfully likeable, especially the conversations between Weston and his lovely brother Sutton. This story unfolds with pain, humour, emotion, passion and a family bond that cannot be broken even in tragedy. I absolutely loved these characters and the story line. Fabulous!
I recently read To The Lady Born. It was part of a boxed set by the author that is no longer available. I loved this book and the story it had to tell. The two main characters were wonderful. Sir Weston de Royans is a knight who has always been devoted to piety, chivalry, and honesty throughout his life. He meets Amalie Leighton Rossington de Vere when assigned as garrison commander of her brother's castle which was captured. The story focuses on the relationship that develops between them and how each of them deals with what happens to people when it is not necessarily their fault. Love blossoms between them but it is an emotional journey for both. This is a full-length novel and one that I greatly enjoyed reading. Very worthy of 4.5 stars.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.
A vicious attack and rape by a drunken Commander of the Keep, leaves a lady in a very battered and bruised situation. Thanks to a gallant young knight, who sends an alert to their Leige, and shows her away until help arrives. However, further dire circumstances occurred from that rape, and the once chaste and virginal young woman, now cannot face the world, with such shame. Then the brutish Commander is recalled, being replaced by another, a very different man, indeed! Okay.. that's enough, you need to read for yourself what happens next. It is a grand tale of love and redemption, for our lady and our new gallant Commander.
Weston and Amalie. What a love story. Amalie was brutally beaten and raped by the Garrison Commander at her home when her brother ran off and left her with the enemy. She was rescued and hidden by a young soldier and her servants until the evil man was replaced with a new commander. Weston, the new commander was immediately drawn to her when he saved her from an attempted suicide. He did all he could to keep her safe and fell in love with her. He did not know she was with child as a result of the rape. When he found out it did not matter. Their story is action packed, with evil personified, rumors, family drama, and a love that just keeps growing. Loved the characters and the story.
You will be drawn in from the very start of this book. Your emotions will be rocked as you witness tragedy, humor, disloyalty vs loyalty.
Family secrets lay deep and slowly rise to the surface. You'll experience deep hatred and then vengeance releases the hatred and restores peace of mind, body and soul.
The storylines are surprising as you travel through the twists and turns in this journey that Kathryn Le Veque takes us on.
Sit back and enjoy as you won't be able to put this book down!
Making A Wrong💔 Into A Right💘 ADULT Medieval🏰💪🗡🐎 Warfare and Romance💕 Didn't much care for the screaming child permeating the last part of the book. So annoying and repetitious.
The novel deals with the rape and beating of a noble woman , and her attempts at suicide🗡because of it. The book also has elements of adultery but for good reason. Could be trigger points for some readers.
Kathryn LeVeque can spin a tale so real you feel like you’re part of the story! You almost hate for it to end since you’ve become so enamored of the characters! Don’t ever miss a Kathryn LeVeque book if you can help it. She has made many of her books into audiobooks with the very best narrators. You’ll become lost in the sexual/romantic tension and banter! 🥰
The premise for the story was interesting: a woman being a "Trollop" and beyond redemption or a good marriage by being raped. However, the characters of Weston and Amalie were too sweet, pure and perfect. Not my favorite Le Veque novel.
What a wonderful book! The characters felt real. The story was written perfectly. The religious beliefs were written appropriately in the story and enhanced the storyline. It is a fine writing on life of a married couple. Not a fantasy.
The first time I read this one was in 2012. And it is as good as all the others I have read. Kathryn is by far the best author I know. I cannot say enough wonderful things about her books!
Right from first page this book had me hooked. The poor woman that had to live thru the worst thing of her life till her knight in shining armor shows up and saves her feom herself and others.
The book was really good. It captures the imagination with rich context details of Amalie and Weston. Despite some horrible things that happen in the book, I was still able to laugh a number of times.
