"Super Memory: Ageless Memory in 12 Practical lessons" is a book by Shakuntala Devi who is popular for her extra-ordinary mathematical and mnemonic skills. Knowing Shakuntala Devi's achievements and work, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the whole book is redundant and unhelpful (unless you are newbie to the world of mnemonics). I don't question the techniques, tricks and tips presented in the book. They most definitely work well if applied with care. However I am disappointed that better mnemonic methods were not discussed. There are far better and more efficient methods to explore and regrettably those are not discussed in the book. I had to skim through most of the book since the ideas were mundane and redundant.

Hopeless !!!

You pickup a book, just because you admire the author for something and then it turns into a disaster.
The book says nothing new and I doubt , author said something , which she applied. Rather it is a collection of various Whitepapers and excerpts , taken from Various books and indianised to suit the audience.

I think The author should write more on the subject , she is expert. And Maths is her domain and she has been Best in it.

I would rather recommend "Buzan's" books on the subject.

Totally Disappointed.

This book, Super Memory: It Can Be Yours, shows how readers can enhance their powers of retention. It contains puzzles, fun activities and other exercises for a good mental workout, to enhance memory. Super Memory: It Can Be Yours is divided into twelve chapters. It takes a light, interesting and highly effective. The first chapter begins by showing how a person, through their daily routines and other factors, acquire limits in their mental faculties. It then shows how to clear the mind of all the clutter so that it becomes free, open and creative. The author then shows various techniques like using memory aids to remember names, faces, and task lists.

She gives an exercise in memorizing the longest number in the world, interesting card tricks that help readers practice retention of details. Super Memory: It Can Be Yours uses visualization techniques, association methods, clues in facial expressions, gestures, voice signals etc. to teach the readers how to improve their memory. Other chapters in the book include Instant Recall through Classification, Think Like Crazy, Remember like a Wizard, and Memory Tricks and Treats.

After reading this book, the author assures readers that they will never again have to make excuses for forgetting faces or names, misplacing things, being unable to recall vital pieces of information and so on. The book is written in a language that is simple and easy to comprehend.

This book is from 2006, but is still valid. It was written by Shakuntala Devi likely when she was in her late seventies and speaks about all the methods she used to teach her students at the memory seminars. I have not read the entire book as there are sections which are not immediately interesting, but both the introduction and especially chapter 1 are what makes this book a 4*.

IMO, chapter 1 is a summary of all the modern techniques used to make sure that your brain and memory work into old age. Shakuntala Devi describes in simple and logical language the need for good nutrition, exercise, meditation, relaxation and describes the four steps for learning pretty much anything. In one chapter you get most of what you will get after reading several neuroscience books, books on brain aging, meditation and healthy dieting. I believe there is still much value in reading more in-depth books because they will provide updated information, but this one sets a good framework of reference: Memory.

I would like to offer my heartful greetings to Mrs. Shakuntala Devi who has been with us through her books. This book is very funny and practical approach towards life's mundane problems that we encounter daily. Indeed, we feel not good, when we forget what was the item that we had been told to buy whether it is commodities, vegetables, fruits and so on. On top of this, smartphone is not the all time solution of it. THINK, if you have a memory that can memorise a 100 items list without using smartphone, if you can remember the name of any person at the first meeting without saving it in the smartphone, if you can give a speech without imitating someone's thoughts or words from google and speak confidently.....
All of this is possible and you have an inborn gadget for it - The Mind !
This book guides you and unlocks the door of How things have to be happened.
Read it, Feel it, Enjoy it and Share it.

Picked it up from the library with hopes to boost my memory. While the language is vibrant and fluent, I am not certain about the techniques. Having said that, haven't tried any as yet except for what I already know and practise. It's certainly motivational, but how effective is yet to be gauged. A lot of it was redundant, and had me skimming over pages.

She tried something, but that something didn't catch my interest. Frankly speaking, I was not dazzled by any of the tips provided in this book. #Skip #Skim

Good book that helps you to boost up your mind and memory.

I agree with the initial chapters, that say you have to be happy and enthusiastic and sane to keep your memory working and some tips to do so, as per your food habits vitamins. Also if you read carefully you will come to know the mistakes you are doing while you memorize things as compared to the author or people with good memory that logical linking and organizing.
Whether it is to memorize something from the book, a speech, a grocery list, phone numbers and to-do list. The author has everything and also says memory has nothing to do with age you can boost it whenever you want but keep using it and be happy....
