A cantankerous grandfather who doesn't want her help, but needs it because of a stroke. A grandmother who is the sweetest thing ever, but suffers from Alzheimer's. And family members out to protect "their share" of the estate.
As the children seek to solve the "problem," Grandpa, a master cello maker who can no longer do his craft, reluctantly shares with Amy the story of his great adventure - how he met and won the heart of his wife in Vietnam.
Amy has more immediate concerns. Is her boyfriend dating someone else when she's not around? How can she fend off the Montana boy who has taken an interest in her? And then there's that Harvard thing.
Amy doesn't need any of this. Not now. Her life is planned. It's a perfect plan.

Amy Prescott climbs out of her bedroom window in the middle of the night itching to get to a concert. She's going with her football hunk boyfriend, Joel. She loves him but he has yet to say those three magical words to her.
As she's about to make her final escape, she's caught by her father. But before any reprimand can be fully made, out steps Marilyn, her mother. Grandad Robbie has had a stroke. With such devastating news, the concert is forgotten (almost begrudgingly by Amy) and they make their way to Montana.
On their arrival they meet Aunt Susan, her mom's sister. Always competitive especially as she wants her daughter to do better than Amy. There's Uncle Charley, - a failure when it comes to marriage and then Bob. He's the ever helpful next door neighbor whose a cellist like Amy. The last time they met, over five years ago, she didn't think much of him and she still doesn't. But he's always around helping her grandparents especially as her grandma is suffering from Alzheimer's.
All seemingly with their own agenda Marilyn, Susan and Charley discuss what to do. With their Dad needing to rehabilitate after his stroke, he can no longer look after their Mom. But Robbie makes it very clear to them - he has always looked after his wife and he will continue to do so. Leaving them to argue, Amy is more concerned with why Joel won't say 'I love you' when she laid bare her heart and said it to him - somehow 'that's nice' isn't quite the same thing. Through the familial arguments and Amy's torment over whether Joel loves her she learns of how her grandparents met and how their love has endured the test of time. Being in Montana brings into question a few things.
It would be easy to assume that a YA short story would labor teenage angst But it is so far removed from it. Morey has painted a funny and poignant story with a graceful merging of a modern love story and one from the past. Amy is a beautiful and intelligent teenager on the cusp of attending Harvard but the ranches of Montana have more to offer than she believed. Bob, a likable teenager is hardworking and loyal. Both qualities that reflect her grandfather. Although her parents, aunt and uncle are in the background, the author weaves their discontentment throughout adding a big dose of reality to the overall picture They no longer see the love their parents share - just the cost of the medical bills. Does Amy follow her parents dream and head off to Harvard or will she remain to look after much adored grandparents?
What a great story. Hooked from the beginning, I was surprised at where this tale went. The author has created a believable family and his expressions and language used are spot on. There were some perfectly timed funny moments and this glimpse into the Burns/Prescott family left me crying at the end. Morey has managed to weave the past and the present together sending a key lesson - true love lasts a lifetime. A highly recommended read for young adults and adults alike.

Clint Morey's When I Fall in Love is a captivating young adult novel. It has a healthy mixture of romance, comedy, and tenderness. Amy, the main character, is the perfect high school student on her way to earning a spot at Harvard. Her parents have meticulously planned out Amy's life to ensure she is accepted, from Cello lessons, to Physics tutoring, and even which sports Amy will play and dominate. However, everything is put on hold when Amy's grandfather has a stroke.
Amy dreads flying to Montana, where she hasn't visited in five years. Once she gets there things are not as they once where. Her grandmother has Alzheimer's and her grandfather is too weak to take care of her after his stroke. After witnessing the devotion and love between her grandparents, Amy decides she will rally behind her grandfather in his attempts to keep his family together. As Amy's bond strengthens with her grandfather, he tells her the story of how he and Lynn met and fell in love, many years before.
I really like how Morey presented Alzheimer's and how it can differently affect family members. When I Fall in Love views the disease from many aspects. Grandpa Robert lives for the moments when Lynn, his wife, makes a brief appearance from her own little world. He has kept things the same in the house to help her feel more comfortable, and is always there for her. Amy's mother, aunt, and uncle decide that things can not remain as they currently are. Instead of being mature about matters, the siblings act more like children. After their father has a stroke they immediately want to put their mother in a nursing home and have the estate signed over to them. They act very selfish and it seems at times that they are looking out for only themselves and their inheritance. Amy has not been around her grandmother since Alzheimer's took over her life. She takes it upon her self to be there for her grandmother and grandfather. She wants them to remain together and will sacrifice whatever is needed to see that happen.
Clint Morey's When I Fall in Love is a very quick read at only 149 pages. Once I started the humor and witty dialogue pulled me in. The scenes with Amy and her boy troubles are very funny, as well as the flashbacks of Robert and Lynn in Vietnam. I definitely recommend Clint Morey's When I Fall in Love to fans of Young Adult literature. You will find yourself laughing and tearing up at this poignant novel.

This isn't quite what I excepted when I applied to read this book and review it. It was actually quite a bit better then I was thinking it was going to be. When I Fall in Love starts out with 17 year Amy sneaking out of the house to go with her boyfriend to a concert. Typical teenage behavior, her whole world gets flipped upside down when her parents receive a call that her Grandpa has had a stroke, and they must get to Montana right away. Her world then gets thrown for a loop, and she learns more about her Grandpa & Grandma's love then she ever imagined.
A sweet touching read! That also makes you giggle, which is always a nice blend.

I ultimately downloaded this book because I fell in love with the cover picture. I think it's wonderful and now having read the book, I think it's very apt.
Amy has many things on her plate: keeping out of trouble, getting her boyfriend to tell her he loves her and being accepted at Harvard. Then her grandfather has a stroke and her life is turned upside down.
This is a really sweet book about love, family and friendship. Through the interweaving stories told by her grandfather, Amy learns more about her family, as well as more about herself.

I loved reading this book. It was beautifully told and just the sort of book that I like. The surprise at the end was really fun, and the story brought wonderful feelings to my heart. I wish though that the book had been longer. I would have loved to read many more stories within the book. I didn't want it to end.

Well that was a silly pre-teen book. But made me laugh in spots.
