New version as of September 2013! Sycamore Heights, where everyone keeps a deadly secret. On the surface Katrina Harvey is like any other 17-year-old about to start their senior year but not everything is quite as it seems. After being violently attacked she loses her memory and now has no idea who is friend, foe, or - most importantly - that she happens to be a 235-year-old vampire. Now Katrina is being stalked by someone, or something, who doesn't want her to remember her past and will do anything to keep it that way. Sixteen-year-old Suzanne Harvey was left distraught when her older sister, Katrina, disappeared two centuries ago. Suzanne was turned into a werewolf soon afterwards and ever since that day she has been focused on finding her sister, with a twist of fate leading her to Sycamore Heights, the same town that Katrina now lives. Now, as Suzanne gets closer to revealing secrets from the past, someone from the present doesn't like what she could unearth, even if that means they drive her to the brink of insanity to keep the secrets forgotten. Masquerade, book two of the In The Shadows series is coming soon!
I hate to admit that I picked this one up as a kindle freebie back in 2012 and it’s been sitting on my kindle since then. Katrina is attacked leaving her with no memories of her past and without an identity. Deciding it’s time to figure out her past she agrees to hypnosis therapy which reveals that fragments of her past which she starts to remember. Someone doesn’t want her to remember her past and is sending her notes and items to keep her in the dark. While Katrina doesn’t remember her past it’s going to catch up with her one way or another.
While Katrina may not know her past her sister and friends have been searching for her for a long time. Having found her with her memories missing they are forced to wait but deep down it’s killing her sister Suzanne just watching her sister not know who she is. However Katrina isn’t the only one with someone stalking her. Will the sisters be united? Will the ones hunting them get them? What’s really going on with Marcus?
I liked the characters we have multiple points of view Katrina, Emily and Suzanne. Each girl has a little different of a background with their own tragic story and how they came to be. I like the girls and found that I was able to connect with them more than the guys. I don’t think I can pick my favorite just yet because each one has a quality or personality I liked.
I wasn’t sure about this one the cover is what hooked me in. I think the author has created an interesting paranormal concept that is set in the late 90’s which I loved. I like the way that she mixed the humans in with the vampires and werewolves they worked together instead of fighting each other. The world building wasn’t bad I could have used more but it was still a good amount and the storyline flows along smoothly. All in all it is a really captivating story I just really wish it was long because I enjoyed it very much. I have high hopes for more in the future because I would love to spend more time in Katrina’s world. Overall great first installment.
I enjoyed reading this story, but keep in mind that it is the first in a series so it does end with questions and a cliffhanger or two.
Book One focuses mostly on character development with primary emphasis on the main character, Katrina, who suffers from amnesia. Although she has no idea who she was before, her past is gradually revealed through dreams and flashbacks (but I won't say any more about those, too many spoilers). Hostile supernatural enemies, unknown past, a lost sister that haunts her dreams, what more could you want?
If you like reading about young people, vampires, werewolves and mystery, you'll probably enjoy this book.
Again, this is the first in a series and is not a standalone book, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it.
This was such a good story! The sequel has not come out yet and I am devastated! I need more! Things seemed like they were just about to clear up and man am I addicted now! I have barely hanging onto the edge of my chair here!
There were scenes that didn't seem to make any sense. I didn't feel like a whole lot happened in this book and in a way it seemed jumbled. I don't think I'll be continuing.
It was a nice book sure, but I didn't like the fact that questions upon questions kept piling up with not even a single answer. Left me feeling horribly confused. I get it that this was the first book. An opening to a series as a result of which it focused on developing the characters, but not even one SINGLE confusion solved? Now that's too much. However the writing style was great and kept propelling me forward to keep reading the book. However I don't think a sequel will be released (much to my dismay) because the publication date says 2012 and look now it is 2017!
