Set in a world reeling from the discovery of transhumans, it is a series that charts the loves, the betrayals, and the struggle for survival in a world where humans and transhumans are uneasy neighbours. Tensions are high, riots are brewing. The human race is about to come undone.

Originally released as twelve independent short stories, this compilation brings together the four storylines of the MERGE universe, tying them together in a climactic battle for survival in the darkest of places: the ghetto.

A.M. Harte is a London-based speculative fiction enthusiast and chocolate addict whose work includes the dark fantasy novel Above Ground and the zombie love collection Hungry For You. She is excellent at missing deadlines, has long forgotten what 'free time' means, and enjoys procrastinating.

Merge is a book published by 1889 Labs. The book is a literary experiment: it was written as a weekly serial by A.M. Harte, Kit Iwasaki, MCM and Yvonne Reid, with each one of them writing one chapter every week, during three weeks. Then, on week four, the authors tied all the stories together.

The release of the book was accompanied by a blog tour I followed, but unfortunately I could not read each instalment of the book at the time. Now I have rectified that.

The world of Merge, as one would expect from an 1889 Labs' book, is rich, as in fantasy-rich. Merge presents us with a world with metahumans, mutants who can change shape into animals, and explores some interesting avenues of action taken by the people, the governments, and the metahumans themselves.

The authors do all that by telling a handful of compelling stories. Stories that revolve around the characters, exploring relationships of very different kinds. Stories that are sad and hard. The world of merge is not a happy one, not by a long shot, but there is hope. And in the end all the stories merge together into an explosive finale.

At the same time, the world building effort is evident, presenting us with a believable situation, with the possible answers to a question as strange as the presence of metahumans being well thought-out and developed.

The net result is compelling, a book that is read fast and that will have you anxiously turning the page (or hitting the forward button on your e-book reader, as was my case), while at the same time being short enough not to make you go desperate to finish. In the end, I did feel I wanted more, which is the satisfactory flavour I want to have in my brain when I finish a book. Definitely recommended.

An interesting twist to the whole werewolf history. The authors stories had very seamless transitions and it was hard to figure out who wrote what. Everything came together at the end.
