When adventurer Jason Lewis regained consciousness beside a busy Colorado highway, lower limbs shattered by a hit and run driver, he knew he was lucky to be alive. But would he ever walk again, let alone finish crossing North America by inline skates?
So begins part two of The Expedition, a stirring saga of hope, determination, and the kindness of strangers as Jason, taken in by the people of Pueblo, spent nine months in rehabilitation, legs pieced together with metal rods, before returning to the spot he was run over, and continuing on.
Inspired by the journey, others sought to join, including a middle-aged mother-cum-schoolteacher yearning to see the world. For the expedition wasn’t just a line on a map. The real expedition was the seed buried deep in the heart of anyone who has ever dreamed of knowing what lies beyond their valley, and of embarking upon a grand adventure to find out…
“Arguably, the most remarkable adventurer in the world today.”—THE DAILY MAIL
Jason Lewis is an award-winning adventurer, author, and voice for global sustainability, recognized by Guinness World Records as the first person to circumnavigate the Earth without using motors or sails: walking, cycling, and inline skating five continents, and kayaking, swimming, rowing, and pedalling a boat across the rivers, seas, and oceans. Taking thirteen years to complete, the 46,505-mile journey was hailed “the last great first for circumnavigation” by the London Sunday Times.
RECORDS Jason has set three additional records: the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from mainland Europe to North America by human power (February 1995, Lewis and Smith); first crossing of North America on inline skates (September 1996, Lewis); and first crossing of the Pacific Ocean by pedal power (August 2000, Lewis).
AWARDS & MEDIA He has been nominated The Times inGear Man of the Year (2007), the Land Rover Toughest Sportsperson of the Year, and featured as one of Sport Magazine’s Athletes of the Year. A Fellow of London University, the Royal Geographical Society, and The Explorers Club, he has appeared on numerous television and talk shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC), Good Morning America (ABC), and CBS This Morning.
BOOKS A frequent contributor to magazines (Men’s Fitness, Sports Illustrated, Geographical) and travel books (Chicken Soup for the Traveler’s Soul, HCI, 2002; Flightless, Incredible Journeys Without Leaving the Ground, Lonely Planet, 2008; The Modern Explorers, Thames & Hudson, 2013), Jason is the author of The Expedition trilogy (BillyFish Books, 2012/3): Dark Waters, The Seed Buried Deep, and To The Brink.

The second part of three detailing Jason Lewis’s attempt to circumnavigate the earth using human power only. The end of the first part left him being hit by a vehicle on Highway 50, Pueblo, Colorado, USA on 10-Sep-1995. Both legs badly broken. The story picks up from there and we learn who hit him.
This is not a get around the earth as quick as possible attempt. It takes Lewis 9 months to recover from the accident before he gets on the roller blades again. There is a time where he travels thousands of miles only to have to go back to where he come from. You sometimes need to stop reading and just take this kind of stuff in. If I drive to work in the morning and have to turn back to go and collect something it is annoying. I wonder what I would have felt travelling thousands of miles only having to turn back as the weathers turned. I cannot imagine. He is not even in a car. He was cycling on a 3-speed 1968 Raleigh bone-shaker.
Jason and his friend Steve Smith, an environmentalist, would educate at schools and had a Video and Photo Exchange Program set-up. This was just wonderful to read about and I hope the kids that took part enjoyed and learnt from the experience. The activities they arranged sounded great.
A lot of the action this time is in ‘Moksha’, the pedal-powered boat, on the Pacific as he leaves the US to get to Hawaii, onto the Solomon Islands and then Australia. It is a few years since I read the first book but I think this one feels more accomplished. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it even though Jason and his companions hit so many hardships. Just wait until you see the photos of the living conditions in the pedal-powered boat.
Another incredible installment of this remarkable journey. Well written, engrossing and faithful to the eco-message throughout, although the repeated demonstrations of poor preparation and puerile response to adversity are starting to grate on my nerves. I will definitely look forward to the release of the third and final leg, but am hoping that the expedition matures a little in the meantime.
5 excellent stars. This is book 2 of 3 and it was just as great as book 1. These books are the best adventure books I've ever read. They are full of adventure, humor, and inspiration. I am enjoying very much and can't wait for book 3 to be released. An amazing journey that I highly recommend reading.
Okay. I just finished reading this book for the fourth time. The Seed Buried Deep starts when Jason endured a horrific accident and shows his journey back to Expedition 360.
The first book Dark Waters was fantastic. The Seed Buried Deep continues that trend. The second book has a better cadence or flow of prose than Dark Waters in my opinion. I felt more engaged with The Seed Buried Deep like I was right there experiencing this journey with the author.
The Seed Buried Deep will take you on a roller coaster of emotion. There were many times when I bowled over laughing to moments when I cried like a baby. That's what makes this book unique. It didn't take me to the extremes too rapidly and the writing was even paced. There were only a few moments where I felt like the pace lost traction and there were a few grammatical/misspellings in the book. It was nothing to detract from Mr. Lewis telling his story.
I understand and I appreciate that Jason Lewis took the time to write The Expedition books because there's a lot to unpack here. The Seed Buried Deep is an outstanding second installment to the Expedition trilogy and just be ready to go on a wild ride Moksha (the name of the pedal boat, Sanskrit for Liberation) style.
Just like the first book, this is an amazing read. An Unbelievable achievement. So much so that I often feel like he’s just pulling my leg with the whole story!
Jason’s adventure continues to be told at a fast pace in this book and compared to the first instalment, Seed Buried Deep has many more different parts to it as he tells of his journey from Colorado to San Fran, to Sputh America, back to San Fran and then several parts of the Pacific crossing to Australia. Will the this comes really entertaining relationships with new people and reflections of how they cope with the journey and how Jasons relationships with them develop.
This is simply awesome to read and so inspiring. As well as a fantastic travel book Jason’s focus on sustainability and working with children throughout his journey to teach them about the environmental impact of our way of life adds a more serious and important layer to his story.
As with any good book or film, this left me wanting more. Given the sheer length of his expedition I’m surprised this isn’t a series of 10 rather than 3! Really looking forward to reading the 3rd book :)
This is an incredible story, funny, insightful and mind boggling.
It still astounds me that these folks thought it was a good idea, not withstanding ACTAULLY doing it.
Christ, Jason (one of the key players, and author of the book) didn't even have any cash until the settlement came in FROM WHEN HE WAS HIT BY A FRICKEN CAR!?
If you know me, borrow this from me, otherwise pick it up. Well worth it.
I like the daily descriptions of their activities and conditions. would like More pics and maps. Some places too much flowery prose that is not interesting.
Somehow more incredible and unbelievable than the first book. A page turner that you will fly through and would be perfect reading on your next adventure.
Part two of the first human-powered circumnavigation of the earth--every bit as good as the first book. Jason Lewis' dedication to the trip is inspiring--many would have quit at so many points along the way, but Lewis persevered through every obstacle. Told with humor and insight, a thoroughly enjoyable read. Can't wait for book three.
Another good book with cliffhanger at the end, only one problem...gotta wait for # 3. Allthough I found it ended rather abruptly and would of liked a different transition to book # 3.
