Once again GR screws it up. They put the subtitle before the title. I hate GR and wish I’d never been part of it. It & it’s troll reviewers are why I quit writing. A literary work with contemporary, social science/fiction overtones. This epic tale of an apocalyptic possibility is told through the experiences of a young woman and those in her immediate circle. They face a worldwide crisis that should have never occurred. It thrusts Elle back to the stress-filled mental state of a previous like-experience. She's barely healed and so grateful her giant black gelding isn't counted among the missing. She’s determined to understand how and why the world's equine species could vanish en masse in the blink of an eye. Knowing is the only thing she believes will save her from repeating her previous breakdown, to be forced to receive more of the horrific treatment which closed the inner doors of her memory. Many events and people are now forgotten to her. One is the love she was discovering with Tommy. By chance they cross paths stirring her memories of a recent past as he realizes Elle’s commitment didn’t lose her permanently for him after all. Together they re-discover their path to find a new territory on this world where the horses run. Elle’s journey begins as her past soon catches up in many unexpected ways. Dream-visions reveal a forgotten Native American connection as more people begin hearing the thunder of running horses and the lone whinny calling their name. Many Lakhóta visionaries from a past age guide Elle and Tommy along with others drawn to join their quest. They discover clues to a scientific phenomenon hidden on the Earth. They can't accept the horses may never return unless they realize their horses knew what they do not--a change will effect Mother Earth and all living upon her. Will it be an awakening or a catastrophe, or both?
Member since 2012 the first time. Please do not “friend request” me. I don’t honor this site, nor do I like to visit it. It is my opinion that GR has troll librarians who are conspicuous by their one star ratings, without ever bothering to buy/read the book. Nothing has occurred to change that opinion in over 7 years. I have books listed that are not supposed to be (never published) and a book that was listed for some time correctly is now missing and the toddler activity book listed in its place as part of the series. The titles are similar. The games never end. I have a very low opinion of this site, its owner, caretakers and policies. If you want to see my book listings and their true ratings look me up on Amazon.
**Review By Ruby From The Nerd Girl Page** *This Book Was Given To Me In Exchange For An Honest Review*
In the modern world pollution increases, forests shrink as cities grow and entire species of creatures are slowly whittled down into extinction every day. This disappearance is quiet and gradual. For some of us this is a depressing passive thought. Others actively fight for change, but most just pay no attention. But what will the future bring? And what if, in the blink of an eye, an entire species vanished? And what if that species were one of mans best friends? Surely then, we would pay attention.
In a futuristic world that is polluted and poisoned, mankind have lost their way. Our connection to the earth and nature has been severed. And now all the horses are gone, all but one. And that horse belongs to Ellie. She is a young woman who lives and breathes horses and now Goliath, her beautiful black gelding is the only one left.
The story is told to us through journal entries. With every new entry we follow her and her friends into an uncertain future and look back into a traumatic past. After a tragic accident Ellie has lost some of her memories and now, in the face of this new loss, they seem to be coming back. We watch as Ellie slowly uncovers fragments of her past and rediscovers old love. She is quickly changing as she fights to hold herself together as the world changes around her. Haunted by her nightmares and watched over by her loving German shepherd Dexter, Ellie finds herself falling repeatedly into a dream world. She is visited there by Native Americans who once lived off the land, in a very different world. Perhaps this group of people once so akin with the natural world hold the key. They become Ellie’s guides on a spiritual quest, as her and her inner circle journey to uncover mother earth’s secrets and learn the truth about where the horses run.
There are a lot of stories out there about the state of planet earth, which warn us of the inevitable repercussions of our negligence. Hundreds have predicted the punishments that human beings will endure at the ‘end of the world’. But like Spielberg’s War Horse, this story is made more tender, soulful and beautiful when told by those that deal with horses. There is something so beautiful and elegant about horses. As a child I loved the story of ‘The Last Unicorn’ when selfish King Haggard drove all the unicorns into the sea by his castle where only he could greedily look upon them. This story had the same magic to it for me. If you love horses you will love Judith’s writing. If you don’t love horses, you will when you’ve finished it. Through Ellie’s eyes you learn to care for and understand the creatures that have inexplicably disappeared from the world. I loved how the horses are written - like people, with characters of their own.
Within this story there is an unlikely, yet compelling mix of history, fantasy and science. Along side this there is tragedy, beauty and romance laced carefully into the world Judith has weaved. And beneath it all, a warning.

Author Judith Victoria Douglas’ Where the Horses Run explores a near future Earth that has been abused and polluted to a point that life will end up changing as we know it. Ellie is the proud owner of a special black horse, Goliath. While going to a horse show, suddenly a catastrophic event occurs world-wide causing most horses to vanish into thin air, including Ellie’s horse Lady. Luckily, Goliath stays with her. No one can explain it, but the event occurred with some electrical interruptions and what seemed like a frozen moment in time.
Ellie and her sister-friend Tisha have been through terrible past events that continue to haunt them. Can they survive this new ordeal?
Ellie finds herself on a spiritual quest as she gets visited by Spirit Guides. She discovers she has an important task to complete. Will she be able to get past her fears to discover her true purpose?
Ellie’s past accident caused some memory loss, especially in recognizing some faces. She ran into an old love, Tom, without realizing who he was. Tom wakes up and after seeing her photo in the newspaper, decides he’ll not lose her again. For some odd reason, she feels she can trust him and lets him back into her life. She begins to remember bits and pieces as she time goes on.
Ellie’s life is changing, and she is transforming just as the world around her is changing. Will she be able to help the world? Will Tom and Ellie find happiness? Can an Apocalypse be averted? What will the future become?
Judith Douglas brings us an interesting story with loveable characters. She presents these memories in journal form. We can see Judith’s knowledge of the horse world is extensive, and she explains so many aspects of how to deal with horses. She also has researched much scientific data that relates to the condition of the Earth today. It seems humans have lost their origins with Mother Earth, and they have ignored the voices all around them. If people return to their spiritual ties to the Earth, can there be healing?
Judith poses a lot of interesting questions while weaving a story of adventure with the biggest mystery to solve: where are the horses now? The answer will surprise the reader as Judith takes us on a quest for answers.
I highly recommend Where the Horses Run. It will challenge your perspective.
In the blink of an eye, all the horses on the earth were gone. All of the horses except for Elle’s big black gelding, Goliath, that is. No one knows where the horses have gone or if they will be returned, or if something else catastrophic will happen next. There has been enough pain and loss in Elle’s life. Will she be able to survive this newest loss without losing herself again? And what happens if Goliath disappears too?
Told in the form of journal entries, the mystery of where the horses went is unearthed by reading about Elle and her friends and family and the visions and dreams they have about a time long gone, when American Indians roamed the area. There is a lot of science described in the book, and a lot of fantasy as it is set in the near future. I learned a lot about caring for horses and how much turmoil the earth would be in if, suddenly, all of one species suddenly vanished.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about horses, animals, history or science.
