So much useful information - it’s hard to summarize what impacted me the most.
“Don’t think that there’s a different, better child ‘hiding’ behind autism. This is your child. Love the child in front of you. Encourage his strengths, celebrate his quirks, and improve his weaknesses, the way you would with any child. — CLAIRE LAZEBNIK”
Loved pillar 2 - which included options for improving communications of an autistic child that can effectively reduce their frustration. The book addresses aggressive behavior including hitting in several sections, and puts it in context of what the child is experiencing that triggers the behavior, giving options for the parents to best redirect and address the inappropriate behavior. Aggressive behavior is often an expression of frustration and overwhelm due to difficulty with communication.
Here are a couple extracts that really resonated with me… and these don’t just apply to children with autism.
“Children who have autism tend to respond better to positive reinforcement. It is important to acknowledge and reward good behavior frequently to help establish and maintain positive habits.”
You need to follow through on negative consequences, but your focus should be on noticing and rewarding appropriate behavior. “Dr. Mary Barbara suggests creating eight positive experiences for every negative consequence (2022). This involves praising good behavior, offering rewards for tasks, and creating a supportive environment.”
Chapter 7, in the section that deals with social situations, made me think of Mr. Spock from Star Trek… in that children with ASD and Asperger’s can be highly effective learners, using their memory for rules and logical methods to mitigate challenges!
So much useful information with a very hopeful message! Highly recommend! It also covers financial planning and financial assistance
This book has been fantastic as a guide to supporting a child with ASD. The guide covers an array of subjects from a parent’s pre-diagnosis or post-diagnosis as well. It explains how to identify ASD as well as potential causes, what to do when you get the diagnosis, and how to tell friends and family. It offers support in how to deal with social situations, sensory issues, and anxiety. I feel like the guide equipped me with the necessary resources to support my child in the best way possible. All in all, I found the guide extremely helpful with a supportive and nonjudgmental tone. I would recommend this book to any parent with an ASD child as well as those who may want to support the ASD child in their lives.
I was immensely grateful to come across this as it provided me with a much-needed framework to navigate my journey after my child's autism diagnosis. This book offers a comprehensive understanding of autism, addressing key topics such as communication challenges, behavioral issues, sensory sensitivities, and effective strategies to manage these obstacles while supporting my child's success.
It empowers me with knowledge and insights, helping me comprehend the unique needs and perspectives of my child. With its practical tips and evidence-based approaches, the book has become my trusted companion, providing me with the tools to create a nurturing environment for my child's growth and development.
This book did a great job when it comes to research and advice for parents. It doesn't give us much depth of these mental disorders as a medical book those, tho it is not needed and perhaps apreciatted, no fuss, just all u need
I’m really glad this book exists. I am an adult with autism and two of my three children are high on the spectrum as well. There are a lot of great resources in here and they really help you feel like you’re not alone. Highly recommend.
