The third book of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles begins the saga of the family's start during the chaos of 14th century Hungary. When Stefan's wife and infant son die in a minor plague outbreak, he has nothing to live for, so Theron's turning him to a vampire is just a way out of his anguish. Until he takes over the estate of a merchant, recruits Jean-Louis to teach him business and meets Lady Penelope Kandesky. Plague returns to Budapest and this time paves the way for Stefan to become Baron Stefan Kandesky, a businessman who builds a trading empire with the help of Jean-Louis and Pen.
This is the third book in the Kandesky series and it is Stefan's story. It is a novella and it begins in the 14th Century during Europe's Black Death. Stefan lived with his wife Lisle who just gave birth to his son. His first wife died in childbirth and now he had a new son to love, but the plague doesn't discriminate, it takes everyone. Just before his son's christening Lisle and the baby died from the plague. Not only did he lose them but he lost his father and mother-in-law. He sold the family business and was returning to his farm when he was attacked and turned into a vampire.
He was the acolyte to Theron, who we know from recent books is his arch enemy. At that time all Stefan felt was hatred and despair and after being with Theron for awhile thought nothing of killing to feed. But once his despair and anger subsided he found a new way to feed. After killing an entire household belonging to a merchant, he took over the man's business and home and began to live as a regular man.
Then he met Jean Louis who at the age of twenty came to Stefan's home to help run his business. After ten years, when Jean Louis' time with Stefan was about to end, he revealed himself as a vampire and begged Jean Louis to let him turn him. It is no secret that Jean Louis is a vampire so, of course, he was turned, but was it by choice?
We learn how Stefan became Baron Kandesky and how he met and married his wife Penelope. We watch as the business grows and how Theron's hatred towards Stefan escalates. We finally know how Stefan became the head of one of the biggest corporations in the world and how he solved the problem of feeding without killing.
I can't wait for the next book in the series, they keep getting better and better.

3 1/2 stars. This is a short story about Stefan, and his maker. Moves right along and is interesting, but should not have been listed as book 3 in the series. Maybe listed as book .5 or 5.5, but not as book 3. It does give plenty of backstory about Stefan & then Pen.
I loved this entire series! I liked how well the characters were developed and how the story line grabbed me from the beginning. I couldn't wait to start the next book! Michelle does a great job grabbing your attention and keeping it from beginning to end!
