I wanted to like this book. I still wish I'd liked it, since I spent so much of my time trying to finish the darn thing. I was initially excited to read it, with the expectation that it would be full of insightful exposition of the biblical text, but instead the book read more like it was the colorful musings of what the author thought these people were thinking and feeling. While many of his insights were touching, and sometimes helpful, the bulk were a stretch of the imagination. And sometimes, they were way out of line with anything that could be considered biblical.
I did not come away from this book with a deeper understanding of scripture, which is a shame.
This book should really be entitled "Saul" but I guess one doesn't write biblical commentaries centered around the bad guys. But honestly, once Saul comes into the picture, Samuel gets short shrift in this book!
