This book is the result of four lectures, two of which HH Pope Shenouda III gave at the Cathedral in Cairo along with two others which he gave at the Monastery of Anba Bishoy in Wadi Natrun on 27th August and 3rd September, 1983.
All four lectures are available as tape recordings, which you can obtain from the tape libraries at the Monastery of Anba Reweis and from various churches.
This book is about calmness, and is part of a larger spiritual compilation, 'Landmarks of the Spiritual Way' , which we hope will be published shortly, if God wills.
Succinct, practical and spiritual. Full of wisdom and surprisingly psychologically attuned and ahead of its time. This book is like a semi precious gem for an Orthodox Christian such as myself who sometimes struggles to be calm.
The book begins by extolling the virtues of a calm life and state of mind, from spiritual, social, psychological perspectives. It gives a plethora of examples that apply as much in Cairo as in London.
My main qualm with the book at first was that I agreed with the premise that being calm is positive, but found the lack of practical advice frustrating. This was addressed in the final section, which presents a range of practical steps such as not acting while angry or upset, taking retreats into nature or monasteries, avoiding people who tend to make you lose your cool, having faith and putting trust in God, surrounding yourself with calm people or people who put you at ease and so on.
A short book perhaps, but one that needs work to apply.
Recommended for people who are Christian (particularly orthodox) who want to read about peace of mind. This book of course, will not be as helpful for people who do not ascribe to, or take issue with Christianity.
I will try to seek out more of Pope Shenoudas works that focus on such matters as I find them superior to his work on comparative theology and doctrine.
This little book by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III of the Coptic (Egyptian) Church is a wise and wonderful read.
The author contrasts the calm person with the volatile. He explains by occasionally using Bible verses how the best and most productive spirit is one that is calm. In today's world there are so many missiles that are thrown at us which can shatter our calm. Pope Shenouda also explains how parents who are not calm often produce children who are restless, but at the same time he presents how even though "genetically" we might not be from a tranquil background or environment, we still can teach ourselves to be serene. When one is calm he/she can more easily solve problems and has a good effect on others. When a person is restless and volatile such a person hurts and affects not only himself but those around him.
This is an excellent book not only for Christians, but I recommend it to all people whether they practice religion or not.
