This is my eighth Philip Gibbs book and the first I've rated at less than four stars. Not for the writing, either. I just happened to root for the "wrong" characters and was disappointed.

So the story begins in Europe just after WW1. We find a single mom (separated from her husband after a fling she had in India) with her two kids, a boy age 18 who wants to be an artist, and a girl age 20 who just wants to have fun. Although they are English by nationality, their mother brings them up in Paris, Rome, Monte Carlo, anywhere there are gambling tables where she can earn some cash.

At a very low point in her life, her husband comes back on the scene and talks her into coming back to London to live (not with him but in a respectable way) and he might visit the children now and again.

The children grow up and the daughter in particular becomes like a replica of her mother. Reckless. Suitors come and go and she has her choice of all types. She chooses 'safely'. And .... that's where I got frustrated.

Mind you there are danger and temptations everywhere and things can happen in a shoe box if you let them but I found myself wishing the marriage would fail and that's not a reaction I would hope the author was going for.

Interesting read but not my favorite
