On the morning of January 20, 2001 the climax of the Cold War set the post-apocalyptic stage for the series. The end game began with a pre-emptive strike on Washington. Underground nuclear bombs were detonated from within the basement of the Soviet embassy, by an elite group of Spetsnaz operatives, destroying the central command structure and political system of the United States. For a indefinite period of time a nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union devastated both countries and subsequently the entire planet (but little details are known outside both countries). All manner of genetic contagions were released infecting the survivors of the firestorm with horrible illnesses. The remaining survivors lived harshly during a time of prolonged nuclear winter known as 'Sky Dark'. The geography, climate, and ecosystems of the world had changed dramatically. What was left of the United States came to be known as the Deathlands
There is really nothing new about this book. It follows the standard patterns of doing a jump searching the are and coming across some hostile group. Some of the members of the group are kidnapped and the other members have to rescue them. In this case the hostile group is a underground gang of mutant women who want a new leader. They do not show up until the last third of the book and seem to be there just to give the story an action packed conclusion. The real interesting thing about this book is the return of a character from Ryan's past and the introduction of a new character which has some interesting possibilities for future stories. There is also a lot of discussion of whether the Trader is still alive. This conversation goes on for such a long time that one cannot help but wonder if the Trader is is gong to make an appearance in a later show. Overall not a bad story it follows the standard story line with a few hints of more exciting stuff to come.
Doc goes extra crazy. They get a new tone adventurer, not by his choice. Their team should stop being abducted. Overall a good jaunt through the deathlands.
Ugh. This series is like a train wreck. You can't help but keep reading even though it's pretty much terrible.
The inconsistencies and unexplained impossibilities are driving me nuts.
The author keeps saying about Christy's boots (blue w/ silver toes?) that she's had them on since Ryan first met her. Um, no! When Ryan first met her she was half-naked about to be raped. She got the boots at the Alaskan redoubt where they picked up Lori and lost Hunnigan.
HOW are all "war wags" they just happen to find still working? I don't care how well 'sealed' they are in a garage or redoubt. After 100+yrs the rubber tires would rot, as well as any rubber seals/hoses in the vehicle. Not to mention the gas would be completely USELESS way before 100yrs later.
If the world is so divided, no tv or radio or any media at all created since the nuclear war...HOW are all these people across the United States and in other countries using the same vernacular? They all call the nuclear war "Skydark", they all use words like "triple stoop" (stupid), "blaster" (gun), "war wag" (military vehicle), "stickies" (mutant), etc. Please explain how they are all using the same words to describe things when they are so divided geographically.
