The collected edition of Senryaku is a three-part mini-series all gathered in the same volume.
There is no plot to this book as it is, by it's very nature a pin-up book. However, instead of mere pin-ups, it also gives us a small tale illustrating a small event (or debate) that happened in the life of the heroine that illustrates very clearly one of the Thirty-Six Strategies, a classic Chinese treatise on war and living.
Each strategem is explained to the young warrior Ana Ishikawa by her aging sensei and grandfather Yoshitora.
Thus, we learn the tactics used by the Great Khan to breach the Great Wall of China with a small army of Mongols, and we learn from the Russo-Japanese War how Ana can win the heart of a boy by focusing her affections elsewhere.
I finally got a copy of this book (I had it in 3-comics format), and I can easily call it my favourite pin-up book.
The 90s comic book heroes developed a taste for pin up books, and Shi was no different. However, what definitely was different was that there was a clear labor of love for this book -- because it has more than just a gathering of good artists drawing the girl in sexy and underdressed poses.
EAch of the 36 pinups is themed after the 36 Strategies, and a little tale (usually set during Anne Ishikawa's youth) accompanies the illustration, also helping to clarify the point: from family arguments, to WW2 politics, to teen romance, it's shown how strategy was part of the young warrior's growth and further rounding her up as an interesting and complete character.
Highly recommended for those who like strategy, comic book heroes, and japanese culture.
