Ashes and Wine

Rate this book
Before Tessa met Royal Andreas, her bookstore was on the verge of sinking. And before Tessa met Royal Andreas, she didn't mind being single. But Royal brings in business with monthly wine tastings featuring his family's signature vintages--and brings Tessa's heart to a standstill with intense gray eyes that look on her with nothing but cool indifference.

Yet one searing kiss between the stacks gives Tessa a glimpse of the passion smoldering beneath--and a secret pain further revealed when Royal fills in as the musician at a tasting event. Every note of Spanish guitar tells a story of family tragedy, loss, and ongoing suffering that's made Royal afraid to lean on anyone...even if he needs Tessa's sweet flavor more than the richest wine. Only her strength can save him when his world crumbles to ashes. But has Royal learned trust too late to claim Tessa as his own?

Sexy, sweet, sad and sentimental. This is a fairly short story, but it thoroughly surprised me with just how full and emotionally complete it was. A lovely surprise at that. Ashes and Wine is peopled with a wonderful H/h, and a fantastic group of secondary characters. I hope to see stories for many of them from this author.

The story is very endearing. The main characters have know and been attracted to each other for a couple of years but have never taken it anywhere. But one night they get to close to eachother and the magnetism they feel pulls them together in a hot kiss. From there on out they take things further and the love scenes are great. Tessa doesn't let Royal shut her out and Royal finally gives into his need for companionship during a tough time, instead of trying to shoulder everything by himself.

You get to know his other brothers and I hope that they have their own stories. It would be nice to see what becomes of Simon. Him and Tessa have a little tiff, Simon being quite rude, but Tessa is understanding of the strain he is under. She is there for the family during Roy Sr.'s final days and Royal becomes aware that he thinks of her as his now. And despite distance and both of their businesses they will make what they have started work.

I wish the epilogue would have given more of an indication of what happens with the family. How things work out with Tessa and Royal. The ending was a little abrupt to me.

Gorgeous cover for an amazing book. Taryn is my CP and I got to see this through each step of the process. The finished product is as stunning as the cover. You can't help but ache for Royal, but Tessa and Royal's love story offers hope and some delicious smexy times too. Can't wait for more from this author!

I. Loved. This. Book.

Royal is a perfect leading man -- he's got brains, brawn, and the sensitivity thing all rolled into one yummilicious package. The scenes between Royal and Tessa were vast and varied -- everything from sweet to steamy, with some touching heart-breaking honesty thrown in.

Taryn covers the emotions -- she has me smiling, laughing outright (of COURSE she's a Sox fan lol) and weeping for Royal.

And of course, she introduces a whole pack of brothers, ALL of whom need NEED NEED their own stories. Rafe first, please :)

(and it didn't really take me 5 days to read it; I was away from my Nook all weekend, and finished it early this AM on the train into work, lol)

This book took me completely by surprise. I hadn't anticipated such a whirlwind of a ride.

I also hadn't anticipated the very big role cancer has to play in this book. My grandmother was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer, has gone through chemo, and only a few weeks ago had her stomach and parts of her esophagus removed. Oh yeah, this book hit me. Hard.

The interior motivations, the exterior motivations, all the different personalities combining/clashing only as family units can...what a powerful book this was.

Taryn's writing blew me away. This is an extremely real romance, and this book seriously gave me additional strength and hope. Taryn - Thank you.

I sincerely hope there are sequels to this novel! The cast of characters was too lovely to not know more about.

Royal James Andreas is a man who is conflicted with his need to seek the comfort and love that he craves from Tessa Winter, the delectable owner of the store As You Wish and his need to be strong for his father and family that seems to drain every little bit of emotion that he has left to give.

Tessa cannot figure out the reason why Royal seemed to be so in tune with her when they had first met and changed into a more reserved version of the man since then. Though it hurts her with how much she craves for Royal and his touch, Tessa knows that if he is not willing to meet her halfway, it would never even begin to work out in the first place. [...]

Where to start this review..... I sometimes read a book that completely throws me off balance and Ashes and Wine is one of those books. I truly LOVED this story. Man it made me think about love and relationships and sacrifices we make to our families. Is it worth it to love someone when you can't give them your all? Is family demanding at times? These questions kept popping in my head while I was reading. Then I kept thinking lord let it go and be true to yourself and love that girl! So enough blabbing because I could go on and on but I won't and I won't put spoilers in this review because you REALLY NEED TO READ THE BOOK for the full effect of the story and the power of love.

Tessa owns her own book store but her true love is the wine tastings she hosts every month. She really looks forward to seeing Royal and sampling his latest wine from his families vineyard. Tessa would also like to sample Royal but he acts indifferent around her and she is sure he is not interested in her. What she does not realize is that Royal has been watching her and he enjoys the view he gets to see once a month. What is a girl to do when she wants Royal and is willing to do anything to get one moment with him. When she does get that one moment she will do any and everything to keep him.

Royal is loyal to his family and in being to loyal to them he will deprive himself of a lot of things and one of those things is being with Tessa. He likes her and wants to make her his own but he can't because of the family problems. He does not want to bring Tessa into his family issues because he loves her to much. So he will settle for the once a month wine tastings to see her and be close to her. He will sacrifice a lot to keep her at bay. But what happens after that one night between them? Well Royal will have to make up his mind and decide if family is worth the loss of true love.

What will Royal and Tessa do? Will they be together in the end or will they part ways? This is a SUPERB reading and I need more!

I can't remember the last time I was afraid to read a book the way I was afraid to read Ashes and Wine. After reading a few reviews which implied that there was going to be heartbreak and tears and that I had already gone through a few books which brought the tissues out, I didn't want to jump into this book right away.

So, I took it slow - reading a chapter a day and I interspersed the reading with other books just to even out the emotions. Unfortunately, I also picked a weekend that had a not-so-happy meaning for me to start reading this book, so I was even more vulnerable to a heavy, emotional storyline.

Even then, Ashes and Wine still pulled an emotional whammy on me. I had to take a break after reading some of the more intense scenes because to continue would be to give my eyes permission to remain swollen from tears for the rest of the work day. Hence, the break.

I totally identified with Royal and his hesitance to open up. I did. Which is so interesting for me because I've read both Taryn Elliott's books and so far twice, I've identified with the male character of her books. The men drew me in and made me stay. This has never happened to me before when reading romance. I haven't really put my finger on why this is the case, I'd probably need to read more of her books before I can figure this mystery out.

I also loved the sense of humour peppered throughout the book. Chapter 7 made an impact because I've been there and done that. Drunk dialling. Not fun. Of course, I've always had to take care of my own hangovers, no Van Horny...oops...Van Horne to help me out. Damn it.

Although I love, love, love this book. Only 4 stars because Nate wasn't in it :)

“There were chills up my spine and some thrills I can't define" one-way to sum up Ashes and Wine by Taryn Elliot.

The chemistry between guitar strumming wine maker Royal and bookstore owner Tessa is smoldering hot, what starts out as a one night stand between these two leads to something beautiful and poignant; a story that will truly touch your heart.

You know you have a winner on your hands when a book can take you through a range of emotions and Ashes and Wine certainly did that for me. I laughed so hard reading about Tessa and Mercy’s drunken aha moment over a bottle of tequila I cried and I felt so deep about the sorrow and loss facing Royal and his family I couldn’t help but get all emotionally chocked up.

The writing is flawless, it captivated me from the very beginning; I devoured this book in less than 2 hours, I can’t wait to the read the next installment by Taryn Elliott –Mercy and Alaric story, hopefully we will get to catch up with Royal and Tessa again as well.

‘Ashes and Wine’ has it all in spades, love, laughter, family, holy smokin’ passion and deep emotions. You definitely want to be all over this one, highly recommended

I really enjoyed this book. I was really drawn to the characters. Their emotions are conveyed so strongly I was rooting for them the whole time. It was refreshing to read a book from one of the smaller publishers that didn't read like it hadn't been edited. I look forward to more from this author.

And you know me... I loathe giving stars on thars cause it's so subjective. But if pressed this story would get a 4.5 :D

I really, really loved this romance… I loved the lyrical writing in this story. I adored the characters and appreciated the humor and heart. *sigh* so much heart.

The heroines’ name is Tessa and she owns a bookstore. The store is struggling a bit with the changes in the economy and also peoples reading habits. I liked that the author included this realism into this fictional story. It grounded Tessa and made me immediately relate to her…. And be a smidge jealous! A long time dream of mine is to own a bookstore and hers sounds wonderful. It’s called As You Wish. There were a few other delightful Princess Bride references, because Tessa is a fan. I adored Tessa. She felt like a girl I could be besties with. I loved her snark, strength and courage.

Three years before this story starts Tessa went on a wine tour and met Royal. She felt chemistry and thought the attraction was returned. But in the past few years. NOTHING has developed from that. She’s frustrated that she hasn’t had chance to forget that dream because Royal has been coming to her bookstore and helping with a regular wine tasting event since they met.

Royal *sigh* He has a LOT going on in his life. He’s very relatable- but I also wanted to shake him!!! He is the oldest of five kids and his family owns a vineyard. It’s been in the family for two generations and it’s his whole life. His father is in the last stages of his battle with cancer. It’s been a vicious, long, difficult, struggle that he is losing. His father was diagnosed with cancer a few days after Royal first met Tessa. That was his reason for shutting the possibilities of a relationship with her down. He felt like he would have nothing left to give and needed to devote himself to supporting his family though this tough time. He was determined to be the good son and a strong support for his family to depend on. I admired him so much and wanted to hug him and like I said… Shake him!

Every month Royal comes to As You Wish for the wine tastings and to get his Tessa fix. He looks forward to these moments, like a kid dolling out his Halloween candy, he savors his time with Tessa and has clung to them like a life raft for the last few years.

It’s killing Tessa though. He won’t let her in. She doesn’t know what’s going on in his life and why she’s still drawn to the guy who hasn’t made a friggin’ move in three years! Ashes and Wine starts with another wine tasting. Royal is stressed out, grieving and at the end of his rope. It breaks. *fist pump* He finally makes a move and it’s delicious, literally. They open up a bottle of wine. The shared wine reminds them of their first meeting and all the feelings they haven’t acted on. *sigh* He lets his walls down a bit and lets Tessa in. It’s soooo hot. When they act on their passion it’s very sensual and the language used during the intimate scenes felt lyrical and warm. Royal plan is to just take one night with Tessa, like a fantasy, then go back to his real life.

“He brushed his cheek against her jaw, drawing in the crisp scent of her that would now forever be associated with two of his wines. At least he’d always have that to hold on to.”

I ached for Tessa and Royal. Tessa’s pain when the feelings between them are so vital and real and Royal seems determined to walk away from any potential their relationship could develop. Royal’s agony over letting Tessa go because he feels it’s too much to ask someone else to share his burdens. The rest of the story is how they deal with the very real connection between the two of them. Will he open up and let her in and is Tessa strong enough to go after what she wants and is she ready to deal with his hurt?

Oh! The secondary characters? I am very intrigued by Royal’s brothers and Tessa’s best friend Mercy. There’s a hysterically fun scene with Mercy, Tessa and tequila that is epic!

Here are a few of my favorite lines.

♦ He lowered his mouth until their lips met. Desire hummed between them. Instead of deepening the kiss, he swung her out in a fluid twirl that made the room spin. The absolute delight in his eyes was contagious. She’d never seen him like this.

♦ Tessa slid out of bed and let the sheet drop. Miles of ivory and rose skin stole his breath. “So…what? You’re just going to sit here and brood about it? How about you have an adult conversation with me?”

♦ “I don’t have anything inside me to give you right now.” She passed him and blocked the driver’s side door. “I’ve never felt more cherished and wanted in my life, but you think you don’t have anything to give?”

♦ “Because you’re standing here aching for me as badly as I am for you. You’re just afraid to give us a try:”

♦ He shook his head. Taking half or part of her wouldn’t be enough. If he let her in, even just a little, he’d never let her go.

I LOVED this book. It’s a beautiful story that deals with the pain of losing a loved one in a very open and empathetic way. Yes, life has loss but also love. Ashes and Wine is filled with so much rich detail, passion and emotion. It’s a gorgeous, sensuous, lyrical, decadent, story with full-bodied characters, depth and heart. I highly recommend this contemporary romance and I’m looking forward to the sequels.

(((hugs))) Kat

Review and author interview posted on Kindles & Wine

Tessa Winter, the beautiful, smart, and confident owner of As You Wish, doesn’t have much of a life outside her bookstore. She dedicates her life to her business and doesn’t focus too much on love. She handles herself impressively as a businesswoman, yet I really loved how she lets her focus shift when she gets a taste of Royal! Her professional and personal determination in the book is very well developed and had me rooting for her throughout.

Royal Andreas, one of six boys, has one purpose: to keep the family winery running. The stakes for his family and the vineyard are high, so like Tessa, he focuses most of his energy on his work. But he does indulge in one thing: helping with wine tastings at Tessa’s bookstore. It is this indulgence that allows us to see the real Royal. His attraction to Tessa grows exponentially and I enjoyed how it lead to an internal struggle. Royal’s strong sense of family values is commendable, and it is easy to like a character who wants to do the right thing, yet I kept wishing he would just let himself be loved.

Tessa and Royal are attracted to each other, which becomes glaringly obvious when they kiss! I felt their chemistry come through the pages, so I was frustrated when Royal kept Tessa at arm’s length! He hides something, but Tessa doesn’t just let it go. I loved how her quiet confidence leads her to question why they can’t be together, ‘cuz they are good together! This book takes Tessa and Royal through a journey, one that prepares them for each other and I enjoyed how their relationship developed.

I also enjoyed how the supporting characters help both Tessa and Royal see what they are missing in their loveless lives. Royal’s mom, a strong role model even in the worst of times, encourages him to want more in his life than just the vineyard. Tessa’s friend Mercy created one of my favorite laugh-out-loud scenes as she helps Tessa let her hair down and come to grips with her feelings. These two characters, as well as Tessa’s brother and the rest of Royal’s family, are woven beautifully into the story and have a solid purpose in the plot.

Favorite Lines/Quotes
Royal always seemed so put together, while she was ready to fly out of her skin after a minute alone with him. Utterly unfair!

He loved her husky voice and her intelligence. He was good at keeping his distance, good at taking just enough to keep him going until the next time he saw her. Now he knew she tasted better than any barrel in their cellar.

Tessa to Royal: “Complications are what make up life. It’s how you deal with them that makes the difference.”

Bottom Line
Ashes and Wine is awesome. I really loved it! It is a book that is rich with family values, good friendships, and strong characters who belong together, even when bad circumstances try to get in the way. If you enjoy any of these things, you need to give Ashes and Wine a try.

Sometimes you read a book that makes you remember a part of your life that you don’t remember too fondly and it stirs up a hornet nest. That’s what this book did for me. I got so emotionally involved in this novella that I don’t know that I couldn’t give it anything less than five star because I was hooked. I had to know how it ended, had to know whether or not there was a happy ending for our H/h. I have seen what long-term illness can do to a person, seen how it changes a person and leaves them, albeit temporarily, treating themselves as if they don’t matter. My heart broke for Royal and I wanted more than anything for him to be happy.

The writing of this book was fantastic. There was emotion on every page and I found myself immersed in the lives of these two people. The scenes with just the two of them were sensual and desperate and the scenes with the family were heart-breaking. This review is making this book sound like the most depressing story ever published but there was humour in Tessa’s life; I loved the scene in which her and her best friend talk man-problems over a bottle of tequila. Been there, done that and had the hangovers to prove it; yet another example of how this author has created a story that seemed to touch on memories of my own life and suck me in!

Tessa and Royal were very well written characters. We meet them half way through their tale, when they have already met and tortured each other with forbidden fantasies. I loved them both, believed in their tales and wanted them to work out. The sex scenes were amazing, prolonged pieces of writing which showed the emotion building between the two characters. I loved them. We only got a glimpse into the side characters but there are some that made an impression already and I would love to read more about them.

This book was a very personal five star read for me. It touched emotions in me that I thought were forgotten but it was more than that; it was a very well written, emotion driven romance. I don’t think that anyone could read this book and not feel for Royal and want a happy ending. No, it isn’t an easy read but as much as it put me through the wringer, I enjoyed the resolution even more for it.

This is a story about love and loss and the notion that we don't have to always try and do it alone. It's just about love and wham bam thank you mam (although there is that and it is HOT - make no mistake.) Royal is a guy trying to hold it together for his family who are battling a serious illness and he doesn't want to drag Tessa into his world of responsibility in the fear he couldn't give her everything he had as he's juggling so many balls for the family and their business.

Tessa loves Royal and manages to claw her way into his world with everything she's got. Including the help of her friend Mercy who is a highlight of the book itself. The drunken scene with the two of them is just awesome and brought back so many memories of girls nights out it wasn't funny! In the end Tessa discovers what has really been going on with Royal and in turn tries to help.

This leads to a new set of issues and I won't say too much more as the read is so worth it. This is a must read and it gets you going from the underlying impending sadness you think is going to come to the witty fun dialogue and the heart-felt connections between all of the characters. The family-vibe was so strong it made me wish I was a part of the Andreas family so, so bad. And by the end of it I felt like I knew them like the family that lives down the road.

Taryn's ability to write such vividly visual scenes is right up there with some of the best superstar writers out there. She makes you not only see but feel every single scene which is why it pops right off the page and it is with this I know that this won't be the last we hear from her. I laughed, I cried and most of all when I saw "the end" come up on my iPad I knew I had taken a journey well worth taking.

Fiction is meant to engage: your heart, your humor, your fears, hopes, goals. It's meant to entertain, and ASHES AND WINE entertains on many levels, but it also twisted my emotions into knots. Ms. Elliot's writing style is rich with feeling, lyrically satisfying and her story delves deep into the fragile balance of life and death in a way we can all relate to. Royal and Tessa, her lovers, are flawed and beautiful, so determined to sacrifice for family, and yet needing each other too desperately to remain aloof. Their story intertwines with Ms. Elliot's knowledge of wine and its many, almost sensual nuances, and makes for a fascinating read.

Family is important in ASHES AND WINE, and Ms. Elliot makes sure the reader knows this, by giving us insight into the Andreas family dynamics, as they prepare for tragedy. Their weaknesses become the foundation of Royal Andreas's strength, along with Tessa's determination to break down his barriers and get through to his heart. Their romance is passionate and complex.

Don't miss out on this wonderful book!

I loved this book and devoured it like fine wine within 2 hours. It was a beautiful and poignant story that touched my heart deeply. The author created characters that we cared about and the circumstances were so true to life that it brought tears to my eyes. Tessa and Royal established a connection when they first met three years ago but wasn't until recently that they acted on their feelings for each other. However, Royal can only promise Tessa one night because he and his family are in the midst of a horrible tragedy and doesn't feel he has the right to involve her during this difficult time. Tessa is one determined woman and she will stop at nothing to stand by Royal's side. The love between them is so powerful and heartwarming that it left me in awe. I loved the bond and devotion Royal had for his family and I enjoyed Tessa's friendship with Mercy. Their drunken night provided much needed laughter and we got a glimpse of a possible love story for another couple. I highly recommend this book to romance readers.

Taryn Elliott's 'Ashes and Wine' is a poignant and sexy novel about two people who are in desperate need of love. Both Tessa and Royal have put their businesses first for far too long - Tessa owns an independent bookstore with a very cool Princess Bride themed name and Royal is about to inherit the family winery.

Because his father is dying of cancer.

Ouch.

What transpires is part sexy romance and part poignant adult coming of age as these two dynamic, strong characters finally collide into each other in a whirlwind of emotions and steamy sexy sexy, taking readers on a roller coaster ride of emotions until the very last page.

Full review can be seen at Seductive Musings.

I have to warn you that I believe my opinion of this book will be out of the ordinary and most readers will rate it higher. A major part of this book deals with one of the main characters watching and waiting as his father slowly dies of cancer. I lived that a couple years ago and it's not a subject I ever willingly read about. To make matters worse, the type of cancer as well as the main character's age and family role are the same as my experience. It was too similar to my life and I checked out emotionally very early on just to get through the book.

Royal runs the family winery. Once a month he takes a break from the strain of his daily life at the winery by going to a local book store, As You Wish, and running a wine tasting. The bookstore is owned by the one woman Royal knows he is meant to be with. Unfortunately, being in a romantic relationship is impossible for him right now. Royal is the oldest child and it's his responsibility to keep his brothers in line and the family winery running. He is also dealing with the strain of watching his father's agonizingly slow decline from cancer.

Tessa is the owner of the bookstore. She and Royal have a history. They met a few years ago when she visited his winery. There was a lot of flirting and a definite connection for both of them but nothing became of it. Now she has to see him once a month. She approaches the monthly wine tasting with a mixture of expectation and dread. She's still very interested in Royal and can't wait to see him but he always keeps his distance from her and it's disappointing every month.

I liked Royal and Tessa but I had trouble connecting with them. I think it was the dying father that stopped me from taking a vested interest in them. I say this because at one point Tessa goes to visit her friend Mercy. They spend the night drinking a bottle of tequila and drunk dialing Mercy's moody and overbearing neighbor, Alaric. I suddenly got really into the story when Mercy and Alaric were part of it. I could see the spark between Alaric and Mercy and I wanted to stay with them and see where their relationship was heading.

Sadly, Tessa left the next morning and that's the last I saw of Mercy and Alaric. I was once again left with Royal, Tessa, the dying father, and the family trying to deal with it. The father takes a sharp decline and is a major focus of the story for a while. Royal's family is breaking down and fighting amongst themselves and Royal himself is barely holding together. It should be a very emotional part of the book, and I think most people would react to it, but I felt nothing. Royal and Tessa were also having lots of sex which I couldn't even take an interest in because it was the deeply emotional, strong connection type of sex. I wasn't feeling the connection or the emotion so it was just a bunch of words and body parts for me.

My complete lack of connection with the main characters made this just an OK book for me. It's well written and my connection with the supporting characters, Alaric and Mercy, leads me to believe it was the subject matter I had a problem with rather than the book itself. Ashes and Wine is a book about support, love, loss and the intense emotions they bring with them. My lack of emotion made me miss out on the major aspects of the book. I'm sure my experience will not be a normal reaction and most readers will be deeply moved by it.

A captivating, heart breaking, loving story...

Why aren't there more than five stars to ratings? This story deserves no less than 10 stars. Yes, it is that good. It is better than good.

I'm not sure where to start on my review as this story touched me in so many levels and more than one way. Come on, it made me more than teary eyed. I cried like a baby by the time I was finished with it, so there!

Tessa owns her own shop. It is not just any bookstore, her edge is the wine tastings she hosts once a month. Not only does it bring customers, but it brings her drool worthy Royal. If only, he'd care to look her way. Truth be told, he does, but he's really good at covering it up.

Royal looks forward to the monthly wine tastings at Tessa's store. He can send anyone, but that is his only excuse to see her, and there's no way he'd miss it. Like Tessa, he's also got a thing for her. He just doesn't want to act on it, yet. He isn't ready to offer what he knows a relationship with her would require. He'd love to give her everything. The thing is his family is going thru a really hard time, and his focus must remain there. He thinks it would be unfair to start something with Tessa and bring her into the chaos. He wants to give her his undivided attention, yet with everything going on at home, he knows it'd be impossible. He'd feel guilty and selfish in doing so at a time like this. He can barely get by with the stress he's under.

Tessa is willing to take anything he is willing to give. She asks for nothing in return. One night together proves to them both there is much more than just the physical attraction. Royal shuts her down. Tessa is not about to give up without a fight, and that leads her to a great discovery. Tessa tries to help, and later has second thoughts on whether their feelings for each other are truly real.

There are quite a bit of laughs throughout the story (e.g. Mercy and Tessa getting drunk was hilarious). Excellent dialogue. Fab s.e.x. The family ties are so strong, it feels too real, it hits home, and then the end... well, you'll have to find out for yourself.

I could go on and on, in short this is a FANTASTIC story. Saying it's a "must" read doesn't even do it justice. I'd be dissappointed if this story doesn't become a best seller. It DESERVES to be a BEST SELLER.

Dear Taryn,

You left me without words.
xo.

Blurb:

This the first book I have read by this author and if her future releases are going to be like this then sign me up for reviewing all her future releases! In her first book for Entangled Publishing, Ms. Elliot brings a potent contemporary story to life in a heart-warming way.

Royal Andres and Tessa Winter have been interested in each ever since they met nearly three years ago but have been afraid to tell the other, but when they share a kiss after the monthly wine tasting at her bookstore, Royal is torn. Royal’s family is in crisis and he is the oldest son and believes he doesn’t have time for a relationship as this crisis is consuming his personal and work life. But there is no harm in looking and because of his interest in Tessa he does these tastings every month to escape from the winery and his family when he could easily have another of his brothers do it.

One night by chance a performing musician pulls out at the last minute on one of the tasting events and Royal can’t say no to her so he agrees to help when the night arrives. It is the start of something beautiful and tender but can it last with Royal’s family crisis still gnawing in the background? Tessa wants to take it to the next level. Can he?

I was captivated by this story as the author manages to convey a lot in her book. There are moments you want to cry, moments you want to laugh, and there are moments in this book that are sure to appeal to any romance lover. The book holds a dashing hero that is conflicted between family and the girl of his dreams as well as a heroine he can’t say no to. This is a couple that is so in tune with each other but can’t move past the obstacles preventing the fruition of their union.

When the first hurdle is eventually crossed is seems there is a change of status in their friendship. Royal, the dreamy guy who is so in control of things, takes a backseat as Tessa takes control of their relationship. It’s weird to see Tessa grab control so quickly. At one moment she is not confident in telling Royal about her interest or to make a move on it but suddenly it’s as if something has awakened in her and she sees that Royal is interested but has a greater problem and she takes control of their relationship

Oh, I hope this isn’t the last of Royal’s family; he has four brothers and one in particular tugged at my heartstrings: Simon. Also there is Tessa’s best friend who seems to have her own love troubles as well and decides to reveal secrets to Tessa during a girl’s night out. And finally, there is Tessa’s brother Blake, and Marissa who seem to have something going on. I want details now and hopefully we will get it as I found ASHES AND WINE’s epilogue abrupt. 5 couples, and I can’t say this enough: I want more like kid in a candy store.

I got about 10% into the book, happily reading, and then went, "Oh hell". I didn't realize that a major plot line involved cancer. I go out of my way to avoid books, movies, plays, etc about cancer; they just shred me. Taryn and I talked and I decided to keep reading, see how it went. There were some rough moments, cancer is not fun to read about but it's not the main plot, the romance is. I made it through the book and while it was wrenching at times, it was doable.

Royal and Tessa have been dancing around each other for years but haven't done anything about their mutual interest. Finally, temptation is too much, and the circumstances are right. But of course their relationship doesn't go smoothly; Royal has a huge secret he's keeping from Tessa and he pushes her away again. Trust is a problem for both of them, as is communication. There were times I wanted to slap Royal for being so close-mouthed and for not letting people in. Tessa is a control freak and has trouble letting go and just relaxing.

There's a scene about halfway through the book that had me roaring with laughter. Royal has pushed Tessa away, and she's at a friend's house. She and her friend Mercy (and every time I read that name, I immediately thought of Mercy from Patricia Briggs' books, :D) get rip-roaring drunk, call Mercy's neighbor and just generally make asses of themselves. The scene helps ease the tension in the story, shows us more about both Tessa and Mercy and leads into the next portion of the book. It was a good interval, funny as heck and a very well done bridge into the second half of the book. It also helped me gather my courage to keep reading.

The second half of the book is a mix of hope and despair. Hope for Tessa and Royal as they come together and break down the barriers between them; despair as the person suffering from cancer gets weaker and crankier. Elliott writes beautifully about the pain and numbness and anger that families deal with when a member has cancer. In the midst of all this, Tessa and Royal's love grows and they both learn, with difficulty, to let go and to trust.

Although Elliott perfectly captured the emotional havoc that cancer causes in a family, I didn't completely buy Royal's reasoning for not getting involved with Tessa; it did make sense but I think a little more background into who Royal was pre-cancer havoc would have been good. It would have laid the groundwork for where Royal is emotionally when the story starts. Despite that, "Ashes and Wine" is an emotional ride, a sweet love story, full of humor, grief, joy, loss and hope. Pour yourself a glass of wine and curl up on the couch with it.

I received a PDF from the publisher for review.

This book combines two things I absolutely love, a bookstore and wine. How could I not want to read it. On top of that, it's a steamy romance which is always a win. Both Tessa and Royal are such amazing characters and I loved their chemistry. They are both totally pining for each other, but neither one will act on it. When one kiss happens between them, everything changes. This book is full of emotion, romance, and some really good laughs at times.

Tessa owns her own bookstore and her business does pretty well. She holds wine tastings there once a month and Royal is always the one to come. She has had a thing for him since they met at his family's winery. She is good about keeping things strictly business between them, but when they have a moment where they let go, that's when things change. She knows that it's more than just attraction. She is totally falling for him and she knows that he feels the same. All she has to do is convince him that they have something special with each other and he needs to let her in. She has some moments where she loses herself, but she is a very determined woman and she will not give up without a fight.

Royal is going through some major life changing things and though he really does like Tessa, he keeps trying to keep her at arms length. He feels like he can't have her while he is struggling with his other personal issues. He is too stubborn to just let down his walls a little and have someone care about him, and help him through his tough situation. No matter how much it pains him, he doesn't want to get involved with her. He thinks she deserves someone better who can devote their time to her the way he can't right now. Royals inner struggle was very emotional and made me fall for him so much more. He is stubborn, but very charming, caring, and oh, so gorgeous!!

The thing I loved the most about this book was the searing chemistry between Tessa and Royal and also the fact that as much as they wanted to be together, it wasn't easy. They go through a lot, like way more than some people do in a lifetime, in a very short period of time. The thing that was great is, it's not like it was some crazy instant thing. They did initially have an instant attraction, but they have been working together doing the wine tastings for years, so they have gotten to know each other a bit. When they do give into each other, it's sizzling and I swear my nook was going to start smoking any second. I wanted them to work, I was rooting for them to find a way. For Royal to let her in, for Tessa to convince him that he didn't need to deal with whatever struggles he was going through alone. This was not just a great romance, but had an amazing storyline too.

The improvement from Taryn Elliott's debut, Uncross Your Heart and this book, released just a few short months later, was so stark that I actually DMed the author on Twitter to make sure she wouldn't be offended if I noted it in my review. She replied that she wrote them three years apart, so she truly hoped she'd improved in that time.

Yes, I am apt to rate this book more favorably because I know the author. But I think it's a good book apart from that, too. I read this only because I know Taryn. I liked it because it's great writing.

Ashes and Wine is about Royal Andreas and Tessa Winter, though it's more Royal's story. It's his dying father that keeps Royal from acting on the growing attraction he has for the redheaded bookstore owner he sees once a month. He gives in for one very passionate night, but Tessa, being a smart girl who goes after what she wants, doesn't leave it at that.

The second half of the book has its steamy moments, but it moves to the winery Royal's family runs, where the aforementioned father is spending his last days. The last part of the book is far more touching than titillating, as Tessa and Royal navigate the difficult question of whether a relationship based on support during hard times is worth pursuing in easier ones.

A lesser writer wouldn't have been up to balancing the horror of Royal's father's illness with tender moments between Tessa and Royal, but Taryn nails it. By the time the book wraps up, I had no doubt that these two could make it, and that they deserve to.

If you like romance, I would highly recommend you pick this up. You're missing out on an excellent new voice if you don't. And, if you don't like romance, consider picking it up, anyway. It's missing a lot of the tropes that probably keep you away, and it's a very touching story.

Though, if, in subsequent books, Tessa has nothing more interesting to do than a support role at the winery, I am going to have words with my friend. I understand why the question wasn't addressed in this book, but I am hoping to see glimpses of these two up the line.

Beautiful and emotional story! I really enjoyed it, only I wish it were longer. Elliot’s book will pull at your heartstrings and also set your blood on fire. This romance is definitely steamy. =^.^=

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I love a good romance story, and this was definitely a good romance. There’s no question of the chemistry between Royal and Tessa. The scenes where they get together made my whiskers burn, and I loved the fact that the sex scenes were not over the top like in some other books. Elliot did a wonderful job giving each scene just enough heat without going overboard. Right from the start I wanted Royal and Tessa to end up together and it pained me when Royal pushed her away because of what was going on in his life. Don’t get me wrong, I know exactly how it feels to lose someone close to you, and I know full well everyone goes through the experience differently, but I honestly wanted to cuff Royal upside the head a few times while reading. But at the same time, I couldn’t help but get teary eyed a lot too.

Yes, this book got to me and I’m not joking when I say it is an emotional story. This is a book that requires a box of tissues and your favorite comfort snack nearby. And if you read it all in one sitting, you might want to follow it up with a few funny videos. If you want to know what happened in the book that got me so worked up, get a copy for yourself and give it a read through. You won’t get any further spoilers from me.

There was only one thing which kept me from completely enjoying this book: it was too short. I honestly wanted more. More time spent watching Royal and Tessa’s relationship grow, more interaction with the five brothers, more insight into what was going on with Simon, etc. As a novella, this is a fantastic teaser, but I really feel it should be turned into a full length novel. Especially since the ending sort of leaves you hanging as to what happens next for everyone.

That having been said, here’s hoping that Elliot revisits the Andreas family in the future and gives everyone a chance to have their stories told! And here’s to more Royal and Tessa in the future.

Love! Seduction! Romance! Ashes and Wine was a sensational read which combined two of my favorite thing in the whole wide world within the story, books and wine. This initially pulled me into the story right away. Then the development of well-rounded believable characters with relatable situations concerning responsibilities and the pursuit of happiness kept my eyes glued to the pages.
Tessa is our main female character and she’s not looking for love but happens upon it one fated evening at a winery that is run by the Andeas’ family. What seems like a promising starts of a romantic relationship ends before it really begins with Royal Andreas. Too busy with running her bookstore she fine solace in seeing Royal once a month at the wine tasting events that brings in good business.
“Responsibility and loyalty were bread into the roots of the Andreas family, and flowed into the grapes that bore the wine.” Royal has never had a choice in whether to assume responsibility over the family business. It has been ingrained in his character since birth by his father. There isn’t room for anything else, not even love. Putting his life on hold to fulfill his responsibility he has decided that a relationship with Tessa is not really a good idea. He’s scared to get emotionally involved with anyone especially romantically. He just doesn’t have room on his plate for something like that but sometimes love can’t be ignored. Some loves won’t be tamed or pushed under the rug. And sometimes the best thing to do is just accept it even if it’s the hardest thing in the world to do.
The importance of companionship, love and understanding is extremely evident in this story. These are the stories that give us hope and inspire us to do what is in your heart. I enjoyed this book and would love to see more of what happens next for them and other characters. I really want to see what happens to Royal and Tessa’s brothers. I’m crossing my fingers that I get to see more. Oh and how dare I almost forget to mention the drunk dialing scene. It had me rolling on the bed. Seriously! I called up a friend just to read her that part. Super hilarious!

Ashes and Wine is a fun, sexy read from author Taryn Elliott. The story follows Tessa, a woman who is all work and no play, and Royal, a hot winemaker who helps host Tessa’s monthly wine events in her store. The pair have an immediate, obvious attraction, but it never gets any further than that regardless of their longing for each other. But, one night Royal decides he can’t stay away and indulges in a night of passion.

Tessa seemed wimpy at first, but once things begin to heat up with Royal you see a surprisingly strong side–she’s definitely not a pushover. In fact, her strength was pretty refreshing. She was the backbone of their relationship without being domineering or forceful; Tessa had a quiet strength that kept everything together, which is really more realistic than how many strong women are written.

Royal’s family was in a crappy situation. His father is slowly dying of cancer and having a hard time letting everything, especially the winery, go. As the oldest son, Royal feels an overwhelming responsibility to manage the family and his portion of the vineyard on his own. His refusal to accept help really annoyed me and I had a hard time liking him. If he wasn’t so fabulous in the sack, I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish reading the story.

Because Tessa and Royal are so independent, they bungle a lot of their relationship in the beginning and if my Nook was made of sturdier materials I probably would have thrown it in frustration. Eventually Tessa mans up, however, and they try to actually have something more tangible than glances across the store and shy smiles while sipping wine. And, thank God they do because it is hot! The sexy bits are definitely for adults only and were really well written. I don’t usually enjoy a lot of sex in romance novels (you will never see me reading 50 Shades, for example), but Elliott wrote those scenes in such a way that not only did I not mind them, but I was happy they were there.

Even though Ashes and Wine deals with some heavy issues, like cancer, it was more inspirational than depressing. If you are looking for a quick, hot, romance, this is the story to pick.

*****Won an ebook copy*****

I have to say that this was a really great contemporary romance book. I have not read contemporary romance books before, and I am barely getting into YA contemporary. Although, let me clarify that this is not for YA this is for Adults.

In Ashes and Wine Tessa Winter is the owner of As You Wish, a bookstore where people can go to read a book, relax, enjoy small performance, and every month taste Royal Andreas wine. Royal Andreas family owns a wine making company which is where he spends the majority of his life and time, the rest is saved for his family. Royal takes some of his wine every month to Tessa's bookstore, where she hosts a wine tasting event. Although, seeing Tessa once a month has brought him closer to her, and seeing Royal once a month does not help Tessa's attraction to Royal.

The book Ashes and Wine is filled with romance, passion, commitment, and family loss. The romance and passion between Royal and Tessa left me wanting to read more, and I seriously could not stop reading the book. Which leads me to the commitment both Tessa and Royal are both afraid to form. Royal is more afraid to have a commitment with Tessa, since he believes he is not worthy of her. On the other hand, Tessa is not so afraid of being an anchor for Royal and to be there for him both physically and emotionally. The commitment also ties in with family loss in the book. Now, I won't say more because I don't want to ruin/ spoil the book for anyone.

Lastly, I believe Ashes and Wine is the perfect title for this book. I totally understand how the title of the book ties into the whole story. Wine is important throughout the whole story, because it ties Royal and Tessa together and it was part of the building blocks in their relationship.

Overall, this was a really great read and I seriously recommend it to all Contemporary and Romance lovers out there. It seriously left me wanting for more :(. I guess I will just have to re-read it :)!

But only suitable for people 18+ :D!

Review copy given by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

In a nut shell:
Emotional | Not What I Expected | Great Characters

My Rating:
4 stars

Details:
I was not expecting what I got out of this book. The characters are fantastic and the story is just WOW! I read this book in basically an afternoon/evening… I was invested in these characters – all of them. I really liked the value of family in this book and interaction of all the family members throughout the book. My favorite has to be Blake and Tessa – OMG I was laughing out loud several times! I loved them together!
I was right there with Tessa the WHOLE TIME – confused, pissed, loving him, then hating him… I was completely engrossed with her. I love the description of her hair. Now I’ll admit – I apparently have a thing for red haired heroines lately – but Tessa was GREAT regardless of that fact! She is independent and smart and responsible. She’s such a hard worker and thinks so much, at times I just wanted her to shut it off and enjoy life, but without the inner monologue it really wouldn’t have been Tessa… so it really worked.
I loved that Royal was artsy and practical… emotional and so closed off. He frustrated the hell out of me, but when he let loose – WOW – he was amazing.
The flow of this book was really nice and I didn’t ever get lost. I really liked the pace and the writing style. Everything really seemed to work well together and it all worked awesome for me.

I recommend this book to Adult Contemporary Romance Lovers. =) Go forth and enjoy my fellow readers!
