Kedean's saddled with a deceptively simple task: deliver a bride-to-be to her fiancée across the sea. The complication? The "bride" is a nobleman, temporarily cursed with a woman's body, who's none too pleased with the arrangement—he does, however, take a quick liking to Kedean.
Whatever Kedean expected when he signed up for this job, attending to the every whim of a moody, arrogant, and sometimes suicidal nobleman with a bad case of a witch's curse was not it — nevermind falling in love with him.
4.5 stars. Ends in a semi-cliffhanger - the main couple separate to follow different causes although each promises to return to the other - and while the first six chapters of the next book has been posted, it has not been updated since mid 2012... Damn...
The characters got more interesting as the story went on, but... all... the... dialogue... with... all... the... pauses... just... got... too... annoying...
Am I sexist? I must be, given how quickly I was turned off this book by all of the femininity going on with Basil. Baisil. Baysil? Baisyl.
Here's the little I typed into Evernote as I read on my phone: I've become spoiled of late. I was sitting through - well, mostly skimming through - exposition like God, exposition ew
I dunno. I feel not as guilty for not liking it after seeing friend reviews on GR. Of course, no one I know actually read it, but Emma has it marked don't-bother and apparently none of her friends really liked it either, so I feel less bad.
Actually, as a mental exercise, I tried recasting this as a fanfic. You know, with characters from a ship I ship, see if I could stomach it then. I came up with the crackiest idiot crack as I recast, and then it was just weird, and I was falling asleep when it seemed like a good idea, so I guess that's the GR equivalent of night-blogging. (For the record, I tried recasting Stony[steve/tony] into this somehow. I had no idea who to put as the annoying little K guy, buzzing around like a fly, why oh why the rhymes o god I need to shut up now)
...eh. just...eh.
(also, how the fat do you pronounce "Kedean"? Kee-deen? Keh-dee-an? Keh-deen? Kee-dey-an? Like wow, what am I supposed to do with this combination of letters, srsly?
And then there was some shit about a dragon or something like what was up with that? I couldn't even get around to being okay with the "I swear I'm not a woman" thing. Actually, I was fairly convinced Baysil was a woman. Like actually was a woman, but the actual curse was everyone thought she used to be a man, including her, except for the people who met her after the curse, because they weren't included in it, or some screwy shit like that.
Or something. Eh. I feel like I have more to say/should say more, but I think I'm done.
It has all the charm (and problems) of original slash, meaning that it goes from awesome to kind of boring, has quite a few scenes meant purely for fangirling purposes. It's quite long, but though it's marked as complete it's only book 1 and the sequel is on hiatus *insert furious weeping* I have actually tried reading this once before and I gave up on it because all the discussions on gender were a bit off putting. Even the strong women have a bit of a complex about belonging to the fair sex and the men keep trying to tell them that "even if you're a woman you are amazing...". I was also annoyed at the main character because he had been stuck 99% of the time in a woman's body for years and he still couldn't cope with it at all. I can understand being upset that somebody changed your body without consulting you, but I'd rather read about a character that learns to deal with it, fight though it and so on and not about one that keeps complaining all the time. There were several moments when I thought he got over it, that he learned something about himself, but then he blew it later on. In the end, there was basically no character growth. Anyway, I suppose I'm ranting a bit. My main issue was that I was hoping for a more humorous approach to "I'm a gay price stuck in a woman's body" and that the fact that he was stuck as a woman most of the story and also made me feel like I was tricked into reading a straight romance along the lines of "I fell in love with my bodyguard".
This is a great read. What you see is not what you get when enchantments, dragons and elves are among the cast. Different and fast-paced. Kadean is a very large man hired to protect a young lady crossing a large body of water to meet her bridegroom. But "she" (Basil) is an enchanted dragon-lord and a lot of action follows... and pirates attacking the ship to get Basil are only the simplest of the problems. It's unpredictable and the author is never boring.
Love this story, very original and constantly engaging. Even with our main character trapped in a woman's body I still felt that this was very much a m/m book. There is a bit of m/f but I thought it was handled beautifully, this was probably the first m/m story where I was not put off by a m/f scene or theme. I also have to give props to the author for their mastery of emotion with every character and the depth they create with every situation and relationship.
Great for anyone who loves good slash/LGBT romance, fantasy, and adventure. Tackles issues of gender and race, but weaves it all into a fun, quick moving plot and sports a wide cast of characters, each with their own quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. All in all, a very enjoyable read.
This unique book is excellent. It moves quickly and smoothly, world-building a place where various races other than human exist, not always in harmony. A person's identity is based on his/her gender, race, and such. What if one of these items is in flux?
An enchantment has changed Baisyl from the firstborn son of his nobleman father to the firstborn daughter. Supposedly nothing can change him back and it is presented as for his own safety. The story opens as he is about to be shipped off to be married, in a foreign land. Baisyl has decided to commit suicide rather than live. His brother hires an escort/protector to travel with Baisyl. The adventures begin on the first page and continue throughout the book. The main characters are fully developed and their attraction moves delicately from step to step, far too slowly for the male part of Baisyl and totally too fast for Kedean watching Baisyl shift from one gender to another.
The twists and turns are unpredictable and unforgetable. It's very well written and stands up well to rereading. If you like m/m romances, you'll thoroughly enjoy it. Hurry and read it while it's still free.
i loved the long story, the detail into the world and what the characters go though. considering the length i was expecting it to come to a conclusion! but then found a book 2 .. which only has 5 chapters.so i am currently wandering if it is worth reading, as i will probably just get frustrated. it is a serious shame as i feel like i came so far with the characters and want to know where they ended up only to find the Author got writers block.. 3 years ago! the hazards or reading original online fiction! but saying that it is a lot better than most of the fiction i have paid for!!!!!!!
The idea was there, the plot, the intrigue, the romance, the characters, they were all there. But man, the dialogue killed me. While fanciful and informative, it was long and drawn out. And the use of improper ellipses simply killed me. Aah, "..blah blah.. blah con't.." does not a story make. And when each character talks like this.. all.. the.. time.. It's a miracle I didn't kill myself.
Such a shame, because the rest of the writing is just so good. It's so nice, and flowy and the descriptions, while over the top, are always so pleasing to read.
A great read with a slow-burning romance, but beware, there's a massive cliffhanger at the end and the writer has been AWOL for about three years. Don't hold on to any hope for book two :(
A fókusz néha elcsúszott a történetről. De aranyos mese volt élethű szereplőkkel. Csak nem tűnik befejezettnek.. vagy inkább nem sok értelme van a végének.
