She must escape her dangerous fiancé by ruining her reputation before the wedding can occur. Armed with a sultry red dress and a list of London's disreputable men Beatrice has one night to find the right man.
William Bradley enjoyed his nights of debauchery and found himself at home amongst London's depraved citizens. He never wanted to be the hero to any damsel in distress. But his past is working against him. Forced by his own conscience into helping Beatrice escape her future husband he is now tied into the unwanted role of a woman's savior.
The unlikely pair could fall in love, if they don't destroy each other first.
The basis of the story was ok but not brilliant, the language was rather immature, also what was he actually, the title lord isn't actually passed on unless at least a minimal title such as a Baron is involved, simply being a Lord is a courtesy title and cannot be passed on to a son. This story does not in any way reflect the period involved although not quite sure exactly when it was set but some time in the 1800s
I didn't actually intend to read this book right now. I downloaded it ages ago on a free book binge (those are real) and it's been just sitting on my Kindle ever since. But then a few nights ago the book I was going to read refused to download so...I decided to give this one a try.
I'm really glad I did.
Honestly, it was free so I went in not expecting much. 75% of the free books I've downloaded have let me down so my hopes were low but I was so pleasently surprised by this one.
It's quite the cute story and was hard to put down once it really got going. Beatrice and William had some wonderful chemistry together and they were both interesting and likeable and I so badly wanted to see them both be happy, especially William. I loved that at the beginning, William was saving her but by the end, she had basically saved him...I'm a total sucker for a twist on the idea of damsel in distress. It made for a fun read that felt more than a little addictive at times.
Also it made me fall madly in love with William myself, and I think that's the mark of any good romance.
There were some flaws in the book. I would have liked to see a little more explanation behind Beatrice's strained relationship with her parents. And a little more interaction between William and Beatrice before they were so desperately in love, and a lot more before William opened up to her. And the ending was a bit too over the top. However, all that being said...as a quick, fun, romance novel, it worked just the way it was.
You know when you're doing a survey online and they ask you to rate something, 1 being strongly dislike, 5 being strongly like and 3 being no particular feelings? That's how I feel about this book. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. I might have liked it...I don't know.
Beatrice and William were very cute together, once they stopped being so stubborn. Well, once William stopped being so stubborn because honestly, his fear was sometimes a little too much. I understand he had a very traumatic experience in his past (good lord, that was some messed up stuff with his dad), but there were times when I just wanted to shake him and tell him to get on with it. Of course, I do feel like we missed out on them really falling in love...talking about their pasts, getting to know each other, etc.
The ending was far too over the top. It actually was ridiculous. I think it was the only part of the book that I had a real reaction to, and it was honestly to roll my eyes and just keep going.
I also had a problem with some of the language, which was decidedly not Regency England. And the grammar...an editor works wonders, really. Even if it's a trusted friend who majored in English, it's incredible what an editor can do for a story.
Anyway...didn't love it. Didn't hate. Kind of liked it.
Good complex relationship story. Easy to read, sink into and escape. The hopeful romantic in me never tires of the "damsel in distress" story as long as the characters are well developed and strong. Both of the main characters are well-thought out. Couldn't put the book down until I finished it. There was enough complexity in the characters and their relationship to keep the story interesting. Although, the story was somewhat formulaic, the development of the characters' relationship and "happy ending" was still satisfying.
Three stars because I'm feeling generous. When I read the description it sounded like it had promise but the story was just blah. I kept reading thinking things would pick up but they didn't. I don't expect precise historical accuracy but the term Ms. wasn't even around during the time period and it was used numerous times in the first 10%. It was difficult to take the villain seriously; he seemed more of a fool.
The author seems capable of writing a good story, but I wouldn't recommend this one.
221pgs, she is tryihng to escape her dangerous fiance, he never wanted to rescue the damsel in distress. The unlikely pair could fall in love, if they don't destroy each other first. Regency Romance
The horrifying secret is terrible and I think without that, this could've been a better book, that and not jumping into love. Don't like it when they fall in love too quickly.
