Първият ѝ роман в стил чиклит „What's New, Pussycat?“ е публикуван през 2000 г.

I bought this book because I previously read and enjoyed What’s New, Pussycat? by Alexandra Potter and wanted to read more from her.
This book has a lovely cover and the story captured my interest right from the start, Frankie was a likeable character who seemed to be going through a rough time after losing her job. After a disastrous birthday trip to the bowling alley she also ends up losing her boyfriend and her home.
I loved following her story as she headed to LA to start a new life full of glamour and fascinating LA living. During her time there a few coincidences seem to push her in a certain direction, one which she is quite reluctant to head towards. As I’ve said before, I love a story that contains a coincidence or two so this was a particularly enjoyable part of the book for me.
Rita and Dorian were brilliant characters – really fun and outgoing, they certainly liked to enjoy life and have a good time. Reilly was an interesting, sexy guy who couldn’t figure Frankie out as she blew hot and cold with her indecision.
This book may have been a little bit predictable at times but this didn’t affect my enjoyment of it in the slightest and I found that I just didn’t want to put it down (another one day read to add to the list).
This is a real page-turner and, seeing as most of it is based in LA, a perfect summery read.
Che delusione... Ho tanto amato questa scrittrice in You're the one I don't want, mi aveva fatto ridere ed emozionare!
Took me a while to get into. Got up to chapter 17 and hadn’t a clue what I’d read so started again. Ended up being pretty good. Ending was a little too quick for me. I’d have liked a slower build up with the woman taking the lead for the end result instead of it just miraculously happening (hopefully that makes sense without giving too much away).
so, when i first read the synopsis really caught my eyes. i thought the first half of the book is very interesting then after while it started getting really really BORING! i cant express most of the part in the book. it's like 30% of the book is the conversation between the character. most of them is a bunch of crap and lines, lines, and more lines of monologue to the readers. WTF? the writing is kinda sloppy and dull. it's like running in a circle. until the towards the end where the plot is start to kick in. it's almost 30 pages left that is when i feel the need to read the book. i say dont judge the book by the synopsis nowadays. it's just wasting my damn money to buy this book.
I wasn’t entirely impressed by Alexandra Potter’s debut novel “What’s New, Pussycat”, but I hate to leave a book unread more than I disliked it, so with my wife’s tastes clearly having tended towards Potter’s work at some stage, I was compelled to try further novels. The cover of “Going La La” suggested that the earlier book had been a bestseller, so perhaps there had been something I had missed.
Everything seems to be going well for Francesca Pickles. She has a job she enjoys, as a features writer for Lifestyle magazine and she lives with her boyfriend of a couple of years, Hugh. Perhaps most excitingly, it is just a few days away from her birthday and she has just discovered a receipt in Hugh’s coat pocket for an engagement ring from Tiffany’s. Not only is life good, but the immediate prospects of it getting even better over the coming week or so look very promising indeed.
Of course, this next week proves to be the worst of Frankie’s life, as far as she can tell. Her employer goes bankrupt, her birthday takes place in a bowling alley with a couple of Hugh’s friends instead of a fancy restaurant she was hoping for, and the receipt for the ring turns out to have been put in Hugh’s pocket by Adam, Hugh’s colleague, who promptly proposes to his girlfriend in front of them, on her birthday. Then Hugh announces that he needs space and wants to break up, so Frankie must move out of the flat they share and she loves.
Fortunately, Frankie’s old flatmate Rita moved to Los Angeles looking to become an actress and has been pestering Frankie to come over for a visit. Figuring the West Coast of America is far enough away to give Hugh the space he wants, she decides to pay her a visit. However, in keeping with her recent life, even this isn’t a simple experience, as she gets drunk at the airport and gets into an argument with an American at the airport who she is then forced to sit next to for several hours.
Sadly, there is precious little to enjoy here, as this book is as predictable and cliched as Potter’s debut. As with the main character in “What’s New, Pussycat” being named Delilah, it seems that Frankie has been given her name purely as a set up for a “Frankie goes to Hollywood” joke early in the book. Then there is the brash American Frankie hates on sight. It is entirely predictable that in a city of nearly 4 million people, she could consistently bump into the same one and that feelings should develop between them and the ending of the book is entirely predictable and far too Hollywood for realism.
The setting is also fairly cliched as well, with the only places Frankie should end up going should be all the well-known places within Los Angeles. Mann’s Chinese Theatre gets a mention, Hollywood Boulevard is travelled a lot and even the houses seem to be on the side of the valley and have balconies overlooking the city, which every person in Los Angeles based novels and films seems to live in. Whilst the famous people are fictional, the locations and the situations are fairly standard and it feels as if any research that may have been carried out has been done as a tourist more than someone who has spent an extended period in Los Angeles.
The characters are reasonably well drawn, if a little one-dimensional and lacking in depth. The two men in Frankie’s life are presented as complete opposites and there is little danger of mixing them up. There is a clear differentiation between the two Englishwomen, Rita and Frankie, with their differing lifestyles and attitudes towards the city. That said, Rita is entirely different and it’s not easy to see how they had much in common and the character of Dorian seems to fill a similar role to that of Vivienne in “What’s New, Pussycat”, almost as an embodiment of the city, which is a nice touch, but seems a little too over the top.
Both storyline and characters are entirely predictable, with the only thing that may have made it more so was an uncomfortable revelation in the relationship between Rita and Matt. The Police interruption of a nice day out on the beach was perhaps slightly unexpected, but there was nothing else that you couldn’t have seen coming a long way off and much that did happen was a little over the top. Even when there was a change of location, it wasn’t to an entirely unexpected place and once again in that circumstances, the places and situations were virtually identical to those visited in both written and visual fiction on numerous occasions.
On the plus side, this is a simply written book which does mean it passes by very quickly and probably makes it a decent novel to be reading for a long journey – perhaps a flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles. The clichés may annoy, but it could give a vague idea of places you may want to see and whilst neither locations nor plot ever veer far away from the beaten track, or offer anything of more than passing interest, it does at least pass time in a largely inoffensive way.
Another good book from this author following a tried & tested formula....girl gets dumped & meets new guy who isn't her type...or is he?
When Frankie gets dumped by the awful Hugh (how...or perhaps that should be why... did she put up with him?) she flees to stay with her ex-flat mate Rita, who's now in LA trying to break into showbiz. As her supposedly 2 weeks holiday turns into a longer stay, Frankie meets all sorts of characters (especially liked Dorian - great fun!) & has various encounters with the gorgeous Reilly, but if it comes down to it, who will she choose, Reilly or Hugh.....no choice in my opinion!
I’ve read a few Alexandra Potter stories (Be Careful What You Wish For, What’s New Pussycat, Whos That Girl and Me and Mr Darcy) and I loved all of them. It took me a bit longer to get into Going La La. This was my fourth attempt at reading it in fact. I’d suggest reading the other titles I’ve mentioned before reading this one.
Adorable. Absolutely adorable as any other one of Alexandra Potter's books I've read so far. Those last 8 pages got me stressing a bit, but all's well that ends well.
These are the perfect books for summertime. Margarita's in hand while enjoying the salty air on the beach. Nothing can surpass the light read rom-coms that first made me fall in love with reading.
This one is sure to score points with all the hopeless romantics out there. It’s the type of fiction you just can’t resist; feel- good fiction full of unexpected twists and turns
Frankie has it all, good job, lovely apartment and Hugh her boyfriend of 2 years....then it all goes pear shaped! This book is a good fun, predictable, romantic easy read
