'The Chosen Routes' - was the Spirit trying to warn them of something, when the small drama group tried the ouija board? Was there a hidden message behind the sentence, spelt out by the moving glass - or was it simply the owner of the haunted mansion, where they were staying for the weekend on a money-raising scheme for charity, playing with their minds?
Either way, there was no way of turning back now and, for one, it was a weekend they'd never forget. Their Path Was Set.
"The Chosen Routes" is a spine-tingling chiller from the author who brought you the "Happy Ever After" Trilogy...
MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.
Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.
Favourite books "Roald Dahl's Collection of Short Stories" Tim Burton's Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy Anything, really, written by himself. Because he is that good.
The more I read by this prolific author, the more I am impressed. This story is horror, yes; Supernatural, yes; a thriller, yes. Character exposition is excellent, yes. But as well as being scared (yes), I am most impressed by Mr. Shaw's writing capabilities. THE CHOSEN ROUTES is an incredibly polished piece of writing. Each character is perfectly delineated and a perfect fit into the story's jigsaw. The horror starts subtly, more as an aside (like children making fun of the old grimy rundown house at the end of the road), but builds and builds until WHAM!! the reader (and the characters) are knocked senseless with grief and fear. Perfectly polished, perfect in execution.
I've had this book for awhile and for some reason I kept seeing it in my kindle and thought I had already read it. Well I finally read it today and I'm glad I did. It took me about an hour and a half to read and it was a great story. It was about a group of teens that were in a drama club together. They agreed to spend a weekend in a haunted house to raise money for charity. As typical teens they look forward to an adult free weekend of hooking-up and partying. Then someone gets out the ouija board and things get creepy. This is not the typical Matt Shaw book full of horror and gore. It's just a very well written little psychological thriller. There's even a quick note at the end where the author talks a little about writing this story. He says that after letting a friend read it he was told the ending was horrible. Well I just have to say I loved the story and I thought the ending was perfect.
Who doesn't love a group of Scotty, know-it-all teenagers bunked up together in a supposedly haunted mansion? With chilling scares and a gripping story, the ending will haunt.
