A Great Quick Read When I was 5 years old, I wanted to be a writer. But as I grew up, that changed despite my love to write. As my junior year of high school was coming to a close, I had another change of heart with what I wanted to do with my life and found myself at a crossroad. It was then that my dad suggested I try to pursue writing. The stories collected in this collection were written during my teenage years. A lot of the work is "experimental" as I tried to figure out what worked and what didn't in terms of transitions and literary devices. I don't think this collection would've been possible if it weren't for my father or my creative writing teacher. The latter taught me that brevity can be better and just as enjoyable as a novel. The former taught me to believe in myself and to "just keep swimming."
A neek at heart, Sheenah Freitas has a love for the whimsical and magical. She looks to animated Disney movies and Studio Ghibli films for inspiration because of the innovative twists on fairytales, strong story structures, and character studies. When not writing, you might find her in a forest where she's yet to find any enchanted castles.
In the preface, Sheenah Freitas warns readers that this anthology is a collection of her unedited short stories and flash fiction from her teen years. In my opinion, the warning wasn't necessary. As a teen, she wrote better than many people do as adults. (Obviously, age is not a requirement for excellent writing skills.) Could the stories be more polished. Yes, of course, but that is true of any story, even those that are traditionally published. Taken as a whole, the anthology is a tribute to creativity, imagination, and a clean and strong prose/style. Ms. Freitas is an excellent writer and I look forward to her future work.
