Beatrice Maxie, a nonconformist in a small, rural high school, secretly dreams of attending the homecoming dance, but she can’t. The popular crowd doesn’t want her there, and her best friend rejects her for wanting to go. Stuck in the middle, she begins to understand just how twisted high school can actually be.

As if that wasn’t enough, Max also learns there’s something else going on at school, something dark and sinister. She discovers a place haunted by the ghosts of students who have been ignored and forgotten, a place where also dwell creatures that feed on the pain, anxiety, and apathy spreading through the hallways and classrooms.

Max must descend into the heart of this darkness to rescue two students who have nothing in her best friend and the school’s future homecoming queen. Before Max can save them, however, she must learn how to save herself.

I live in a small town tucked away in the hills of southeastern Kentucky. My lovely wife Kim and my equally lovely daughter Arwen keep me company there. We all love to watch cartoons (especially Phineas & Ferb), go to concerts (particularly Blackmore’s Night), and attend science fiction conventions (primarily anywhere within driving distance). For nineteen years, I’ve taught English at the local high school. For thirty-plus years, I’ve been a reading science fiction and fantasy – from Asimov to Zelazny – so I thought I would give writing it a try. (It’s definitely a lot easier to read.)

I have sold a handful of short stories to various publications, including “The Prowler in the Darkness” to Lost Worlds and “The Dragon” to Alienskin. Several of my short stories are available at Amazon.com. I am also the editor-in-chief and a regular contributor to Letcher County Central High School’s SF&F fanzine Phantasm.

Really enjoyed this book. Creepy in places, but not too scary. Overall a good read.
