Driven from police work by the cold realities of the job — getting shot can do that — Sophia Burgess finds her place in nursing. She brought with her the qualities that made her a good cop—fierce independence, inquiring mind, and edgy personality.
Then the victim comes to her.
Sophia's patient dies, but not from natural causes. She uses her clinical acumen as a nurse, her deductive skills as a former cop, and her police detective ex-fiancée to find the killer.
Sophia Burgess has the empathy of a nurse, which she is, with the instincts of a cop, which she was, which makes her the ideal sleuth when it comes to finding out who wanted her latest patient, real estate agent Barry Hutchinson, dead. With several suspects to choose from, including two good friends, Sophia must put personal feelings aside in order to find the truth. A good dose of realism puts the reader right in the midst of hospital procedures and ethical questions. Fascinating details, speedy pacing, and characters that draw you in make this a compelling read. I'm looking forward to more in this series!
Who did it? I will never tell. Also…for a change - I didn’t know before the last chapters. Well done indeed. The characters are well drawn and many times I could envision the scenes as they unfolded. Very enjoyable book.
I read "Illegally Dead" and then immediately started "Imperfect Contract". The author has definitely fine-tuned her craft to the next level with this mystery. Sophia Burgess and Ray Stone are quite credible in every way. I don't want this review to include any spoilers so I won't define that statement further. Descriptions are further enhanced enriching the atmosphere of the settings and characterizations. Conversations between characters seem more genuine. My only complaint is a repeat from the review of "Illegally Dead". New authors, please, please, please take the time to hold the proof from publication until another set of eyes reads your work for copy editing. For example, the word "is" for "if" passes spell check but is a distraction when one is reading your story. And in this book, there is something even worse than I've ever viewed before! Chapter 30 begins as follows: "Insert chapter ten text here. Insert chapter ten text here. Insert" and finally the real sentence of Chapter 30 begins. Whoa! What a miss!! What an unnecessary distraction to the reader. Sad. If the copy editing improves, I would have given this book 3 stars and but the overall presentation doesn't deserve the higher rating for such carelessness.
