The day after Rory is attacked by a wild animal in the park, a handsome stranger turns up at his door. He claims that Rory is Turning, but werewolves are the stuff of legend, right?
During one of his nightly jogs in the park, Rory is attacked by a wild animal. His biggest fear is that he’ll need a new tetanus shot, but then odd things begin to happen. He’ll do just about anything for a raw steak and hair begins sprouting from places it has no business being, like the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet. Stranger still is his desire to cock his head back and howl at the moon. But werewolves are the stuff of legend, right?
After a very curious encounter with a mysterious stranger, Rory is convinced he is losing his mind. Why does he want to rub himself all over the handsome man and bite him? The stranger talks about shifters and pack laws, and about a war between the species that Rory is now, apparently in the middle of. All Rory wants is for his life to get back to normal, but he is turning and whether he likes it or not, life is never going to be the same again.
Lavinia discovered reading at an early age and could always be found with her nose in a book. She loved getting lost in a fantasy world even then. When her parents bought her a typewriter for Christmas at aged eleven, her fate was sealed. She spent hours dreaming up characters and creating stories. Not a lot has changed.
Lavinia is a Welsh Valley girl who has lived all over the UK. Today she lives at home in the small village in which she grew up, just outside of Cardiff, Wales, but ask her again tomorrow and it could very well be somewhere different. She has travelled extensively to places as far and wide as Africa, Asia, Australia, North and Central America and most of Europe. Although some of her books are set in Texas she has never stepped foot in the state but plans to spend time there in the near future. She is a proud Brit, but feels quite at home when visiting the grand ol’ USofA.
Although Lavinia is a huge fan of the romance genre, particularly M/M she will admit to reading anything and everything. She loves horror, a good thriller and if a book has the capacity to make her cry, well, all the better. She loves a gritty, angst-ridden, gut-wrenching story, but is more than happy to settle in with a lighter, fluffier tale. She loves a happy ending and the characters in her books have thus far been lucky enough to find one. She can’t guarantee that will always be the case. She has two cats and wouldn’t part with them for the world, even though they make her sneeze.
Lavinia also writes M/F romance under the pseudonym Amy Armstrong.
Not bad, just entirely forgettable. In fact, I read this book only two days ago and I already had to make an effort to remember the characters and what it was about.
I found the writing choppy and awkward, and there were many times information (like someones height) was repeated needlessly. There were also many errors/typos.
The villain was overly Evil and one dimensional, even for a novella.
To be honest, I didn't think I would like this. I am not a fan of "man made" were's. Never have been. I can get on board with MPREG and the like, but being turned into a were from a bite or a scratch? Not my bag. But, I decided to give this a go anyway.
I am so glad I did. Yes, there were typos like you wouldn't believe and if I can pick up on them, it HAS to be bad. However, it didn't take away from the story.
I really liked Rory and Dante :) Rory's reactions were great. I even liked all the secondary characters.
Rory is out for a jog, minding his business and getting a little exercise in the park. It’s October, chilly and near dark and Rory just wants to finish his work out and get back to his car. This, of course, is when a “German shepherd on steroids”, crosses his path. The dog appears mean and somehow human, prompting Rory to make a “mental note to take his Stephen King box set to the charity shop” if he can make it through this in one piece.
The dog doesn’t get around to biting Rory before another giant animal joins the fray, but it does claw him a good one. As he painfully hobbles to his car he is followed by two huge, mean looking men. As any fan of shifters knows, these aren’t just men. Rory, claw marks, fear and panic in full capacity, jumps in his car and tears off.
So begins the Turning of Rory and his (reluctant) introduction to Dante, the pack’s Alpha. Dante realizes right away who Rory is to him but he’d gone after the attacker and so allowed that moment for Rory to get in his car. It is imperative that he find Rory, as those claw marks will turn him. I found that part interesting, not just a bite but any blood draw will turn them. The pack needs to find Rory for his own sake and Dante needs to find his mate.
Another interesting twist to this paranormal was that every wolf’s mate is born human and then gets to make the decision as to whether to be turned or not. Obviously, this wasn’t a choice for Rory and to add complications, Rory would belong to the pack who turned him, which in this case is the enemy pack, with Dai as alpha. Nice twist, too, that the alpha of a pack can sense when a new pack member is made.
As Rory right away begins to notice changes (raw bacon, anyone?) he is also dealing with Dante’s explanation and the despair that comes from his belief that he “was turning into a monster like the one that had attacked him in the park.” I liked that, as it was a valid fear.
It is a battle of time and packs to see who will get to Rory first, Dai or Dante, and how he will be kept safe. Poor Rory, he’s a pawn and boy, does he pay for it. I found the little things (the ability to call a pack member, for example) kept me interested and I loved mutual bites were required.
There were a few editing mistakes (including my pet peeve, “Rory’s prostrate” instead of prostate) but they were few and minor. I thought this was a great shifter story and I’d like to read more from this pack.
I am a sucker for a good paranormal story. This was a pretty good one but not very lengthy, meaning that the story moved quickly. Within the first few pages and without much buildup, one of the main characters is clawed by a bad wolf and saved by a good wolf who INSTANTLY knows he's his mate. There was not a lot of time spent on character development so there wasn't much of a chance to develop attachments to any of the people in the book. Additionally, the story needed a better proofreader as there were many small spelling mistakes, missing words, and words inserted where they didn't belong.
I liked Rory and Dante. I liked the pack dynamic. The war with the other pack was interesting. The other characters have potential. All in all I enjoyed this book.
A nice story, but it really didn't pick my interest. The characters were fine, but their personality felt a little flat. I was a bit disappointed because I really liked the first book I read from the author, Mobsters and Miracles. I will try with the second book in the series.
Turning is the first book in the Del Piero pack by author Lavina Lewis. I loved the start of what promises to be a great series. I love MM and werewolves so this book is very much up my alley. Dante is the Alpha to the Del Piero Pack. He has been finding people mauled to death by werewolves. He is trying to stop the murders but he cannot find out who is doing it. As long as a rouge shifter is out there all packs are in danger. He suspects it is the leader of a rival pack trying to get his attention. Dante, he is fair minded. He is one to listen to the facts before jumping into the fray. But he can fight like no other if he has too. A strong powerful leader. Rory is human when we meet him. He is out jogging and gets mauled by a wolf. He turns out to be the mate of Dante. Well Rory is the perfect mate for an alpha. Strong, resourceful, and willing to fight if he has too. He can go toe to toe with Dante both in and out of bed. I loved getting to know the packs, and the politics. I really am looking forward to knowing more in the future as well. This perked my interest and I want more!
I enjoyed the start to this series of Shifter Romances, Rory is almost 30, struggling to hold down his boring job, pay his rent and keep his head above ground. One evening, running through the park to keep fit, he is attacked by a wolf, but saved by another one. The second wolf turns out to be his fated mate, Dante, alpha of the Del Piero pack. Shocked and scared by the attack, Rory jumps into his car and races home, away from Dante and those who tried to save him. What follows is the escalation of the war between Dante's pack and their rivals who almost killed Rory, and the war must be won before Dante and Rory get their HEA. An enjoyable hour of reading and I will search out others in the series.
I felt like I was coming into this story mid-series and was supposed to know all the characters that were popping up. I have the feeling, of course, that this is setting up the rest of the series but it seemed to be done in an awkward way. The story was okay. All the tropes were present, making it a predictable read. The writing was somewhat rough but the copyediting (which can be a problem for books like this) was fine. I don't think I'll continue with the series but it was pleasant way to spend an hour.
It was ok... The pack dynamic is weird and different. I think my issue was with the rival pack alpha. His behavior at times just didn't make sense. To be an alpha, I would assume certain things. Mainly that alpha means his wolf persona is the strongest of the bunch. But he comes across as a trickter, weak and conniving, sneaky...very un-alpha-like regardless of good, evil, or somewhere in between.
I read this as an author friend had given it 5 stars.
That now surprises me. It certainly isn't awful but there is nothing new here and it is plagued with spelling mistakes / typos.
The story is one I feel I've read a few times now. An Alpha werewolf finds his mate (a powerful, unbreakable bond) in a human. The Alpha must then pursue / protect his future mate.
There were some interesting characters and it held my attention.
Wish this had A little more meat to it, the overall plot was kind of cliche. It was well written, but there was nothing to distinguish it from other shifter books.
I would have liked to have seen something different from this than what is typically seen in the genre, plus a pack member dies and it gets glossed over that doesn't sit right with me.
... nothing new in this story. A wolf big and strong, an human weak , who must be taken care of... the wolf is a big top, the human a bottom... the human isn't manly... he is described more as a woman than as a man.... the wolf is in charge and the human should only be cute... BORING!
Well done plot and characters. There are a few spelling and punctuation errors but it didn't detract from the story. This is the first book in the Del Piero Pack series and is free so you can get a feel for the authors writing style before purchasing any more of the six book series. Adult read
This is a pretty good shifter romance. Dante is great character and a very Strong, fiercely loyal Alpha. Book one in this series, which was a beginning I really enjoyed.
Well, that was a nicely done. I did enjoy the story and all the characters involved. Of course, I do wish there was more character development.
I have to say I am still a bit confused by what happened to Rory's job and flat. Did he just walk away and never look back? I guess we will never know because there were no answers offered.
