An interesting book in all. Includes daily schedule and ways of Alcatraz and many first-hand stories of some of its most infamous inmates. A bit repetitive at parts, especially the first few chapters, which seemed to only repeat numerous times, "Alcatraz is horrible. Alcatraz is hell." in different ways from the author's opinion. That is why I rated it as I did. However, after reading the book I researched the author, and upon doing that I found I cared about his opinion far more than I had before knowing the man himself. This my my fault for not looking into the author before reading the book itself. Highly encourage anyone before or after reading it to research Roy Gardner himself. The man was far more interesting than he ever touched on in his book, as he did not talk about himself in it but about others he had met on the Rock. It will complete your Hellcatraz experience.
Possibly only interesting to me because I am fascinated by Alcatraz (and bought it in the prison gift shop!). All the violence is washed out, but it is still held my attention with stories about life on Alcatraz and holding up mail trains straight from the felon's mouth.
