This is one of my favourite graphic novels/web comics. Having recently read 'Heretic' the prequel story which explains Luther Denholme's past, I decided to read this again.

This graphic novel is the first part of a four part series which follows the events in Heretic. Reading it this time round has been a richer experience now that I know how Luther became admiral and why they are sailing from the Dark Continent. It is also fantastic to see the characters from Heretic in graphic form alongside the new characters from the Shanivaar Islands which is where this story takes place.

This story shows how Luther continues to negotiate his emotional life and has quiet discrete relationships still trying to protect his family from greater societal disgrace. The novel depicts the fascinating but contrasting cultures in this world. The reader continues to see the effect of the Amurescan's more rigid and stifled society way of life but in this volume there is a clear cultural contrast with the culture of other islands. These islands appear liberal but the people practise slavery and indentured labour.

This graphic series is told from Amon's perspective. Amon is an indentured servant working as an exotic dancer and prostitute in one of the inns. It is at this inn that Amon meets Admiral Luther and the story begins.

Of course this is a furry series and it is depicted really well. There is no doubt that these are animals with the ability to speak, all except for the horses.

The artwork in this series is simply fabulous. The author is an excellent story teller and an excellent artist. My only complaint is the time it is taking to produce the complete series. Part one is available in paperback form but part two is published on line gradually.

Part one is available free on line at

Red Lantern: Book 1 Crimson Divine - http://www.rukiscroax.com/redlantern/
Or it can be bought from Amazon US or from Furplanet Productions.

The rest of the series is currently being produced gradually and can be followed at http://www.furaffinity.net/user/rukis/
A great series in the making.

NB: although this may have the appearance of a benign furry graphic (cartoon) novel there are some explicit scenes in the paperback version and possibly on line. The setting for some of the chapters is a brothel and some readers may find this offensive and it is not for children. I really like this story (hardy soul that I am) but I thought I should point this out just in case.

Having read several of the Red Lantern universe novels, I was exited to see this lush fantasy world visualized in a graphic novel. I felt immediately attached to these characters, particularly Amon and Dhaval, who deserve so much better than the tough lot they’ve been dealt.
I like this illustration style, I like the world, I like the characters, and I look forward to what happens next.
(Fair warning: this book does have graphic portrayals of sex- mostly cause these characters do work in a brothel. Luckily you can kind of skim over the super graphic stuff.)

Didn't think this would be for me, but found it ridiculously engaging and the art work is stunning. Would love the actual book. Well worth reading the online comic if you're interested in purchasing.

So yeah, what else can I say but to praise every single page and scene of this brilliant, atmospheric, fantasy graphic novel? It's defintedly one of my all-time favourites. The perfect reading to shut out the world outside your window for while, just to dive in and explore the realms of a strange, unknown, exciting but yet realistic historical world which will take your hand to guide and introduce you to some of the most believable, diverse and touching characters you'll ever know.

One of the best Graphic Novels ever released under the furry tags. It holds up excellently, and I especially love how it draws you in, tricking you into thinking this is a cute and light story. The world Rukis realised with this and her books is nothing short of awe inspiring. Its a brutal, unfair, harsh world, filled with faint glimmers of hope. The main character of this book is such a glimmer. You want him to succeed, to beat the system, but the further you read on, the more you realise that this is a tall order. Both for societal and character based reasons. You know there is a very real chance that his change will only be an internal one. That he might be forgotten one day.
But you always hope

That is what Rukis excells at

These are two of my favorite artist and I found this graphic novel stunning. I am engrossed in the story and have been trying to keep up online and was thrilled when I found out they printed it. There is graphic M/M sex, which doesn't bother me at all, even if it did the art and story make it well worth it. Look forward to the next! :)

This was the first furry graphic novel I've read and it has officially set a very high standard for others to come. The artwork is as gorgeous as the story, which is wonderfully heart-wrenching and thrilling!
