On a lazy Sunday morning, two young people are wheeled into Room No. 509 of GKL super specialty hospital.
A brilliant nineteen year old medical student, suffering from an incurable, fatal disease hurtling her at a slow, painful, uncertain death.
A wasteful twenty five year old drug addict, with no appreciation of life, with every organ system of his body slowly shutting down.
Two prodigious doctors, fighting their own demons from the past, try to keep these two patients alive, putting their medical licenses at risk.
Death looms in the tiny 12X13 foot room as they fight for every breath of their lives, even as the doctors put them through unapproved experimental treatments to prolong their lives.
How will the last month of pain and struggle change their lives? How will it transform the doctors who work steadfastly to make them live a little longer?
It is terrific how life can teach us its most important lessons in the sweetest way. Through a novel- non living thing no less! How were I to know that this novel is gonna reiterate one of life's incredibly important lesson.
"YOLO". You Only Live Once. Albeit, Dushyant got to live twice.
The story as such has been amazingly spun. This web has all that it needs to entertain, teach, and make you cry. The characters are woven in a way that you can instantly connect with them. If not with their profession or past, then by their "place in this world", their "identity".
Frankly, I liked it better than If Its Not Forever! I think perhaps Durjoy Dutta attemted a Nicholas Sparks here! I say this because it is high on first crushes and love and also, the girl dies. Sorry to break it to those who still hadnt read the novel. You know you should! And it wont cost you a fortune. (Y)
My favorite: Arman took out what he had been carrying with him for weeks now. He dangled it in front of her. It was gold chain, the yellowness of gold had somewhat waned away, and hanging beneath it was a small diamond of 3 carats, and it was beyond beautiful.
'This is for you,' he said and gingerly took Pihu's hand into his and wrapped it thrice around her limp, senseless wrist. Pihu's eyes sparkled as she gazed at her newly acquired possession.
'That is beautiful.'
'It pales in comparison to you. You're the most beautiful thing I have ever considered my own. Before you came along, I was a loner, someone who didn't care about anything but himself, his work, his obsession. But one fine day, you walked into my life, with the help of crutches, no less, and turned it upside down. For the first time, I loved someone more than I have loved myself,' he said.
'You make even dying beautiful,' she purred.
In crux, you cannot- just cannot- miss this novel. I always considered Durjoy Dutta to be trash, but now, I can only applaud and perhaps salute. This novel is "Life" personified. "I cry," Till My Last Breath!
This was the first book I read of this author. Seeing the titles of his other books, I was reluctant to buy n read it as I am wary of Indian college romantic tales. However, I had no option left as I badly needed a book to read during my train journey. And this was one of the few decent books in English in the single bookstore at one of the railway stations my train had stopped at and the only which I had not read yet. So, I bought it..I usually can't sleep in train journeys, so started reading this book after everyone in my friends group went to sleep. Contrary to what I had expected, this book wasn't a weary or bubbly love story, but the story of two lives-one weary and the other bubbly...How the two lives meet in a Hospital room and become..No, not lovers (sorry for the spoiler)..but great friends and true room-mates, while finding true loves and rethinking their lives..The characters reminded me of some very important persons in my life..Pihu reminded me my younger sister who is no more now...Thus, this story touched me in different ways.
For the author, I would say that I really liked his way of describing life accounts in a lucid manner without using the cliches and bromides that young Indian authors fill their books with..and yet retaining the freshness of youth, with its mix of innocence, mistakes, regrets and pain...Yes, I really liked the book and giving it four stars!!!:):) Cheers!!

A very mature work by Durjoy. He has come of age and this one is a heart melting one. The story is about 2 terminally ill patients Dushyant and Peehu and their doctors Arman and Zarah. How they get attached for life at the hospital is the plot. The story is touching and makes us realise the importance of each moment in our life. A must read especially for those who have hefty complaints in life for the silliest of reasons.
Soppy Sensationalism , and an appalingly evident lack of knowledge about the real grittiness of life in a hospital as a doctor , this novel however started off with a faintly intriguing premise , only to turn as muddy and dangerous for your (mental) life as an Indian road during the rains ! Seriously , the biggest testimony to Misogyny in the form of one of the central characters who continues to be in 'love' and take care of her rapist !!! The creepingly , cute " love " story of " The" IDEAL INDIAN WOMAN ! And there's this guy who had the most depth and consequent potential for growth and expression , but like all things Indian , we just don't understand why he can't be a good , obedient Indian Mama's boy ??!! Individual Expression , what's that ??!! But yes , the honours are really swept off the feet by the (FORTHCOMING C**P ALERT) = RIDICULOUS INSANE HINDI MOVIE (Of the 90s) ENDING = DOCTOR MARRYING DYING PATIENT= PUT EVEN CECILIA AHERN TO SELF-DOUBT , which was really my breaking point !!! Ah , Teardrop !(sic)
Ok...first things first - I had vowed to stay away from his books after I finished "Someone Like you". But since I had no other book to read I started with this one reluctantly. And am glad I did! This is by far Durjoy's BEST book.I think his solo writings are much better than collaborations, having read ALL of his books.I found in two places where the names of the characters are muddled...it still is a fabulous read. Its engrosses you with a heart wrenching story of love, life, loss, hope and friendship. Though you can predict the end right from the begining of the book, it will still consume you in total rapture. This book makes me look forward to his next one! :)
Well, as a beginning, this review is biased...just a few factors which make it biased:-
a. I am a girl.. b. I am a girl who loves being a girl.. c. I am a girl who is easy on tears...doesn't really takes much to make her eyes wet...not a major melodrama d. I am a seriously hopelessly romantic girl who knows dreamworld is restricted to dreamworld and still believes that one does get the dream come true in real...
And still, I won't give it a 5 star...it's a highly unrealistic book (thankfully, it still chose the more probably person to live)...the paper quality is bed (yeah, only I can comment on paper quality when my eyes are still moist with the expected but still heart-breaking ending)...the editing is worse (how can you, seriously how can you...from the writer to the first proof reader, to the friends you share the manuscripts and last but not the least, editor, not realize that they are goofing up the names...calling X in between Y's narrative and remembering Z out of blue)...a mistake beyond forgiveness...
But still, the novel does what it can...what it was planned to do...give you a character-sketch of few really twisted people...some by choice, some by fate...solve things out for few...tries to be realistic by putting few out of scene...a perfect love (though I want to read real more about Dr. Arman....are you going to write more Durjoy...or can I copy lift the character and at least write a short story for myself as far as he is concerned...but then don't write a thing, if you want to take it the Ravinder Singh way of 'Can love happen twice')
All in all, a quick read, which would keep you glued...not make you crib too about the erratic story lines we Indian authors follow...and of course is any day way better than the usual college love stories (even if this one is unbelievable love story, it's better than that!!)

Waoo , An amazing read from Durjoy Datta , which takes the readers on the journey to so many emotions . I finished the book and tears enveloped my eyes . Its rare . But it happened ..... This book left a deep impression on me , a feeling to be proud of every one I've in my life . For everything I've . Human Character it is , that we always ignore that we have , but realised after losing them .
A Truly compelling read which let the reader hook to the book till its very end . Book Revolves around Two Patients , Pihu and Dushyant & Two Doctors Arman & Zarah , treating them . Pihu , on one side is a brilliant medical student who self-diagnosed ALS ,one which was diagnosed for Stephen Hawking .She counts every extra breath as blessing. After meeting number of Doctors , she ended up getting admitted at GKL Hospital under Dr. Arman's eye . Arman is portrayed as a genius , one who knew he was gifted . He could see beyond the obvious & take radical decisions that no else would dare to take , as he did in Pihu's case . On other Hand , Dushyant is a self spoiled , intelligent brat who was brought to hospital after passing out in a drinking session a night ago . He drink himself to death after his girlfriend left him .Later coming to hospital , he found himself being fitted with Dr. Zarah . Dr. Zarah , had joined the hospital as intrern under Arman , and was struggling from her dark past , a cripple relationship with her parents especially her Dad . Dushyant too was given up by his parents . Their Love story realise that sometimes if we are broken then someone damaged suits us well . Till the Last Breath....is a deeply sensitive story that reminds us what it means to alive and I think this is the only book so far , whose every single protagonist dictates an awe-inspiring story .
When i was reading this book, i remembered a dialogue which Boman Irani tells in Munnabhai MBBS, "if the patient was someone else, my hand will not shake. but if it was my daughter, my hand will tremble with fear." Although the field of medicine is a risky field, i salute those people who have actually taken up this field. the book shows the other face of doctors when they break the first rule of medicine, "Never get emotional". The writer has written in a multi narrative format. He has done a good job starting from introducing the characters till the part where all the characters join together.
I am not a big fan of Durjoy Datta. I have read a few of his books - You were my crush, oh yes I am single. They were a disaster. Then came his book, If its not forever. I didnt want to read it. But the title of the book made me read it. I wasnt disappointed. It had love stories with travelling. A perfect blend. The 'my kind' book. So I was in a quandary, whether to read it or not. The name seemed interesting. The cover, it is not that great. But as they say, 'Never judge a book by its cover'. And plot seemed convincing. It gave the impression of drama. And, I hate dramas or literature.
Within a week after the book was out, it was in my hands. I just completed reading Jeffery Archer's Twist in the Tale. After reading a few short stories with twisting ends at its best, I was ready to take on a boring read. That is what I had in my about this book.
The book in my hand seemed alien to me. I didn't see many books with white covers. The front cover blended with the papers inside. Also, the book was very light for a 240 pages book. A riffle through the pages told that the paper was very light weighted - indicated low or high quality, I don't know.
I started reading it.
There are in total five main characters of this book - Arman Kashyup, Kajal Khurana, Pihu Malhotra, Dishyant Roy, Zarah Mirza. Arman is a doctor; Dushyant is a patient, who is at the brink of his mortality, admitted in Arman's hospital. Pihu is young, normal medicine student. But fate doesn't play fair with her. She is affected by a deadly........
I liked the concept of the book- An overachiever diagnosed with ALS. A drunkard devoid of love. In fact, the story was very realistically set. The author described well the struggles of the protagonists to come to terms with their fates. I even loved the character Dushyant, despite what is made of him. But somehow, I felt like it was dragged. The 10 chapters in between seemed like a struggle to me. And the editing, oh the editing was horrible. Grammatical mistakes are still bearable, but 'spelling' mistakes? Jeez, that's unforgivable. Anyhow, Pihu's character makes me want to puke in some parts and hug in some. I didn't enjoy hers and Dr. Arman's romance much. I'd liked Zarah's and Dushyant's a lot though. Venky was an odd yet fun addition. In a nutshell, it was a 50-50 bet for me. I liked Dushyant more than Pihu, contrary to what was supposed to be. There were constant ups and downs; The story was not so consistent. However, the ending was very touching. I felt the world stop for a second after I read the last line.
So maybe the story doesn't progress so well, but the ending sure leaves you overwhelmed.
PS- I don't recommend this book to all the Grey's Anatomy's fans out there. Want Medical Drama? Watch reruns instead. :P
This boooook was breath taking.... i cried my heart out on reading such an emotional book.....!! Armaan d knight having shining armour...the heart throb.... d dream of every gal.... Pihu d chubby ever smiling gal full of lyf.... Dushyant an addicted guy who loved his girlfriend bt treated her lyk animal.... Zarah who was an unexpected gal till d end an unflinching character throughout d book.... the emotional scene when she was taken for her second n d last surgery and the author has described dat d bad got cleaned and bedsheet was ironed and her books were piled near her bed..... and the scene where d author has described Arman remained in the morgue till sumbody took him as PiHu was afraid of darkness was damn heart touching.....!!
Read this Durjoy's book. It is good. I wonder how come a guy of 24 or 25 years have successfully written 9 novels, thats mind blowing. I really admire your writing and dedication in it. I have read three of your books and two of them were good. You know, CB sucks when yours are compared with him. You have an unique writing skill. even some of your erotic books suck but this one is a good attempt. yet I wish the story remained unpredictable in the first few pages itself. I understood she is going to be a donor to him, when his kidney needed replacement and she is going to die...
Now I know that being a writer is not about writing mushy love stories, its about accepting the reality and creating a world of imagination in the reader's mind. and i think a lot of research has gone into writing a single book and that shows. one advice. read it slowly paying attention to each and every word. the experience will be wonderful ;)
I had not read any book from past 13 15 days and it feels guilty to leave reading for such a long time.. well it takes a lot of me to say that I wanna give this book 5 stars.. I was not bored , not even once.. I kinda understood the pain because I was having some common health issues too but health issues are health issues argh!! Many books don't make me cry but this one did and I loved the character Pihu .. she just changed my pov.. I was more interested in Dr Arman and Pihu story then anything else in this book.. The third last chapter and the last line was too touching and I could feel goosebumps maybe because I was too much engrossed, little did I knew she won't come alive from the operation theater.. I didn't not thought Dushyant will be alive too but he was saved.. The book had good character development, a ton of hope and it made me bloom with a lot of gratitude.. It was not a cliche engineering college love story with no emotions inside( I thought the author will write something like this only) , but to my surprise the book has got 5 stars from my side.. I am a lot behind in my book reading goals but I am happy and contented that I read this book.. Thank youu!
[spoilers ahead] I didn't like this book. I understand that the story was touching and all, but there were too many other issues/subplots in the book which drew the attention away from the main plot. It felt as if there were mature themes just to add depth to the characters.
For eg, the back of the book talks about how the time in the hospital changes all 4 characters profoundly. But Zarah's transformation didn't result from the happenings in the hospital. It resulted from her father talking to her at home. Her backstory wasn't relevant to the main plot in any way. Dushyant's transformation also feels incomplete. His relationship with Kajal was an unnecessary addition because it didn't play any role in the story. It was just a subplot. Dushyant's transformation only resulted from Pihu's kindness and from his feelings for Zarah. And because of too many themes going on in the book simultaneously, some serious issues (like his abusive behaviour with Kajal) didn't get the opportunity to be resolved.
Anyway, for newer writers who want to discuss and understand the book better, I have made a video. I've talked about the plot, the characters, the romance, and the writing style to help people learn about the good and the bad of this book. Take a look here:
As my reading progressed I was more selective and left this book aside considering unworthy more than a year. Whoever, this year I thought of reading the unread book in my shelve and this one came as a surprise.
I regret for considering it unworthy. A wonderful plot, was heartwarming as the characters were well etched.I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The sooner the better. That's what he always wanted.
I found myself weeping by the end of it. It was truly a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
Till The Last Breath by Durjoy Datta is a story about life, death and everything that falls under it. On one side, there is a girl who is going to die soon but still, she doesn't lose hope and on the other is a drunkard who has self-destructed himself to the level where his body has given up. For him, sooner the better. He wants to get rid of the pain that this life gives him.
Pihu and Dushyant are allotted in the same room no. 509 and it is about how these two individuals are going to change completely by the end and how the lives of doctors involved would change parallelly. Everyone has a past and it unveils gradually. No one is related to each other but still, they feel connected. They feel familiar around each other as if they have known each other since ages.
So many people told me that this book was emotional and heartbreaking and I wasn't believing them fully because of my experience with hyped books but the ending... The ending! It was truly unexpected and unseen. I wasn't thinking that I would see an ending like that. I cried. I felt lost for some time.
For someone, who wants to read something emotional from an Indian author, go for this. I highly recommend.
My second review on Durjoy's book. The story is worth reading hence I'm here to make a remark. First of all this is one of the very few books which doesn't involve sex. The story is about two patients in room no.- 509, and two doctors trying their best to save their lives, because both are attached to the patients in a more than professional way. Will they be able to make it? Will their efforts to save the person they hold dearest to their hearts pay off? That's what the story is all about. The story has some beautiful moments. Pihu is exceptionally cute, so is Zara and Kajal. Dushyant is abrasive, stubborn and learns his lesson the hard way. Arman is stern and strict but changes as the novel progresses and the truth behind is facade is also revealed. This poignant tale of love, endeavors to save your loved ones, takes you on a journey that will touch your heart. By the time the you finish reading the book, you'll realize what it really means to be alive.
I have never read such a wonderful book in my life ! I literally cried like anything at the end. I re-read the last sentence again and again. It never seemed like a story. I felt it was so personal. I'm writing this teary eyed. No book ever influenced me like this one. This is just a masterpiece by Durjoy. Flawless. Pihu wasn't just a fictional character in the book. I...I'm lost for words. My shirt is still drenched in my tears.
Every time when i finish reading a book, I feel so happy and proud of myself. But after reading this one, I Could never put the book back down. I held it tightly and was keeping on reading the final chapter and continued crying. This book will always remain close to my heart. It's not just a book. It's more than that. Miss You Pihu !
