Carmine Gallo is an American author, columnist, keynote speaker, and former journalist and news anchor. Now currently based in Pleasanton, California, he is President of Gallo Communications Group and works as a communications coach and speaker
Lots of anecdotes about Apple, and surprisingly lots of anecdotes about other organizations. The topic is innovation, and given this is a generic topic, the advice and stories are all over the place. Generally, this focuses on Jobs and the way he does business, so if you’ve ready the biographies you probably already can guess quite a few of the anecdotes along the way. I did notice that there were some errors – at one point he mentions Apple would never make a PDA, yet they did with the Newton. And like many such books, there are focuses on products or companies that may have looked spectacular at one point in time but look questionable now. And like these types of books, if it was rewritten today, some of the examples would have been swapped out from something more lasting, or at least more current. Still, an interesting casual business read.
There are many books in this ilk but most aren’t worth reading being filled with condescending or unrealistic advice. This one however is different. It’s a superb read.
Taking an enigma like Steve Jobs and writing about his ethos, achievements, advice, and vision is no easy task. But Gallo delivers a book that captures the essence of the man. Unlike other similar books there are no cliches, and no patronising or unrealistic recipes for success presented to the reader. A disclaimer that this book won’t turn you into the next Steve Jobs is not just left hanging at the start of the book, it is evident throughout the text. But the advice here is so Jobs/Apple-like in its presentation and so beautifully written that readers will feel the pearls of wisdom offered will make some positive changes - not just in the world of business but their personal lives too.
Definition: Innovation is a new way of doing things that results in positive change.
Quotes: "The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark." - Michelangelo
"Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become." -Steve Jobs
"In every man and woman's life, there is a defining moment. It is a brief intersection of circumstances and choices that define a person for better or worse, a life of unfilled potential or a life that mattered, that made a difference. It is true of individuals and it is true of business. We have a great passion for the difference we make in other' luves. We provide a commodity that sustains life. But, more importantly, we provide the most precious commodity of all --hope." Wayne Leonard, Entergy's CEO
Principles:
[ ] Do What You Love. Think differently about your career.
[ ] Sell Dreams, Not Products
[ ] Think differently about how you think
[ ] Jim Vollins offers a simple framewrok that will help you lead an extraordinary life. - What are you deeply passionate about? - What are you genetically encoded for - what activities do you feel you are "made to do"? - What makes economic sense - what can you make a living at?
If you have read the other book of Gallo (presentation secrets of Steve jobs) You really don't need to read this one. The writer repeats himself very much.
In “The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs,” Gallo examines the unique mojo that makes Apple Computer what it is today. Though articles, research and presentations, he assembles just what sets Apple apart from the competition. For example, by focusing on dreams and not products, the products will define themselves, how passion drives innovation not the other way around, knowing when to say ‘no,’ and how simplicity is the hardest part of all. Gallo sites numerous examples, from the original design of the iPod to Jobs ability to analyze products “down to the pixel level.” Throughout the book, Gallo draws on numerous experts from Jobs to former partner Steve Wozniak to product design guru Jonathon Ive to even Barbra Streisand in describing the obsessive pursuit of perfection. The book also allows insights from companies like Starbucks and Subway who also grab market share by a dedicated pursuit of their customer. In all, “Innovation Secrets” draws back the curtain on what many are dying to know about how this one company seems to be able to best its competitors on a consistent basis. As the book demonstrates, this is not by chance or luck; in Cupertino, it is a way of life.
This book is long on anecdotes and Apple-praise, short on practical application. If you are really intrigued by Steve Jobs and Apple, Inc.'s success, then you will enjoy this book and pick up a few helpful tips to assimilate into your life and work along the way. If you wouldn't give a plug nickel for an article about Steve Jobs and just want to vastly improve your ability to innovate, you're going to get seriously annoyed by the over-the-top worship of Steve Jobs and give up on the book before you get to anything that will yield practical applications.
It's also a good read if you like having some intriguing fact or "did-you know" at the dinner table.
What a great book, The book is talking about the innovation and ideas Steve Jobs made in his journey with Apple company (Only apple), How did he make it better and made huge enhancements to the concepts and ideas for Apple Inc.
The Book is Taking you from the journey Jobs started and (Stores, iPhone, Ideas ..etc) till the end. Thanks for Carmine Gallo and his amazing book combined both business and innovation together.
I feel like I got some good information from this book, but it was kind of redundant by the time I finished it. The basic message is to follow your passion, no matter what. It did remind me that my passion, from the time I was a little kid, was to write. So I need to pursue that to the fullest extent. I'm not sure writing about gastroenteritis is exactly what I had in mind, though....
In this book, Carmine provides seven principles for unleashing innovation. The principles are supported by examples from various industries, which helps to understand how to apply the principles within different scenarios. I recommend the book to those seeking new perspectives about the concept of innovation.

Great and easy read to get your mind working about how to innovate like Steve Jobs. Of course, we shouldn't exactly replicate what Steve Jobs did, but his principles toward innovation should be considered. Rethink how you perceive consumers/stakeholders. Make products simple and intuitive. Innovate by thinking of how you'd use a product. Make customer service a priority. Sell dreams and experiences, not physical products. Enable others to achieve more by using your product. Innovators don't need to be the first to market, just continually improve, don't settle and make customers the priority. Provide fewer products, but provide them insanely well. Say no. Anyone that provides any service or product to others should read this book. Leaders that stifle innovation are hurting their company. There are way too many products out there that are too difficult/complex to use and companies are leaving huge gaps for innovators to disrupt.
This book shows the essence of this man Steve Jobs, innovation. Until last, he stick with his lifetime mission after he came back - “Enriching Lives” which he uses innovation to drive his people to “Think Different”.
He was selling dreams not products. The author helps to bring other company’s revolutionary products and relate how Jobs innovation had inspired them. His design method has always been simple and achieve the most with the very least. Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.
His way had always been to find something that we love to do so much that we can’t wait for the sun to rise to do it all over again. A good product is the one that will help you to lead a happy and good life. Inspiring.
I was going to skim read this book because I thought there shouldn't be much new concepts to be learned here provided that there has been a lot of materials written about the man already. I'm glad I didn't. It's not a book that convinces you why innovation is good. It's a book that emboldens you to pursue your crazy ideas by telling you that it's likely that the most reasonable and realistic people you know who tell you your ideas won't fly because they just won't work in real life are probably bozos. That concept is also not new yet it's rare for people to actually follow that advice. There are also great tips on creativity, design and communication.
Steve Jobs was an amazing innovator, and this book was able to carefully craft what is essentially a guide to think like Steve Jobs. It's outlines basic principles, provides examples from Job's life, and also gives examples of other companies with innovators that exude these principles. If you overlook the fact that the author ignored Steve Job's character and his eccentricities (especially when it talks about his management style) the book is a great educational tool for aspiring entrepreneurs. It does become a little repetitive, but overall it was fine.
A light read from an author who has joined the cult of Jobs. Easy to consume (and forget). Lots of anecdotes (more from outside the Apple-ecosystem than I had expected), but not as many takeaways that can be applied.
The key principles worth considering: 1) Do what you love 2) Put a dent in the universe 3) Kick start your brain 4) Sell dreams, not products 5) Say no to 1000 things (eliminate the unnecessary) 6) Create insanely great experiences 7) Master the message
Think differently than the rest. Figure out what you love and are good at, and find ways that can make people's lives a lot better. Steve Jobs didn't sell his products, he presented to the world how having what he innovate could make your world better and easier. He delivered dreams not products. Get this book and catch the vision behind why Steve Jobs was so successful and excelled way beyond his competitors.
The odd good idea but generally light on detail and repetitive. If you're interested the seven principles are: 1) Do what you love 2) put a dent in the universe 3) Stimulate the brain 4) Sell dreams not products 5)Simplicity - eliminate the nnecessary 6) Create insanely great experiences 7) Master the message
I really, really enjoyed this book. The concept of innovation is new to me and hearing the story about Steve Jobs and other innovators has helped me to change my mindset as a person that has become comfortable with just the status quo, a book like this has really pushed me Into high gear. This is a book that I will refer back to in different seasons of my life.
The book starts slow but soon takes off. For the first time it is clear to me how to define INNOVATION and how spectacular are the brains of some Apple like people. A must read for every business people, and not only.
This was a helpful book for what I was looking for. Not a biography of Jobs, but a focus on his business practices and what innovation looks like. Definitely a good read for would-be managers and entrepreneurs.
I was naive for picked this book, If you have read the book by Walter Isaac and iWoz, this one is the wasting of time. The author picked 7 obvious attributes, told some common stuff everybody knows... yuck.
It was a good book that made me look at business and inovation in a new and creative way. Useful for any entreprenour who wants some tips about inovation, business ideas and how to improve themselves. Highly recommend! ❤️
