Unlike the preceding books in the Cherub series, the plot line is not centred around a mission at stake. Instead takes a break from the formula and throws some fun at our characters. The setting takes place at a U.S. military training base, Fort Reagan, Las Vegas, Nevada. The task at hand concentrates at extra training for 10 undercover agents including the main protagonists James and his sister Lauren, plus their friends Rat Rathbone, Kerry Chang, Bruce Norris and Kevin Sumner. 'For official purposes, these children don't exist'.
Personally I was sad to finish this book so quickly AS IT WAS THE BEST IN SERIES SO FAR. The story is punchy with exciting action scenes that enticed me to read for hours, making it very hard to put down.
The story introduces with James' mission in London to get information on demoting an anarchist protestor, turning terrorist. On the contrary, Lauren's focus is on a mission on testing a new airport terminal to expose its security weaknesses before grand opening. For both plots, their missions go awry as James faces a mission with multiple intelligence organisations on the case, aborting the mission and eventually James fails to escape and gets captured by the police. On the other hand, Lauren mission with her fellow Cherubs has been disrupted with the encounter of the military. Both scenes have very funny parts and gripping description to entice the reader to continue on.
During James mission, we find out that Dana, James girlfriend is not all she seems. In fact, she is caught two timing with a fellow older Cherub. I felt with this moment with Dana's cheating was a moral. Regardless she considers it as 'fun', this catalysed a domino effect, effecting several people including James. Especially when he tries to redeem his love life throughout the course of the story. Fun and games can come at an expense, even small actions can have consequence. However for all we know we find out later, that James' first love, Kerry has just broken up, which makes me think it's going to be a potential topic to draw attention to in the next book.
The bulk of the General is focus at Fort Reagan where Muchamore focuses on action and character exposition. For instance, shining light on James failed attempts at a romantic love life. However, I enjoyed the development on Ukrainian trainer (Yosyp) Kazakov's character as there is little knowledge established so far about his background. In fact, the Cherub series hasn't expanded on the personas of the staff at Cherub throughout the novels that much. Kazakov's main aspect was his anti-American attitude which made for some comedic parts challenging the American armed forces and culture.
Despite the entertainment, Muchamore continues to point out serious topics in reality such as the weakness of the U.S. military in combat and behaviour of the British police force towards criminals.
Considering I am steering towards the end of the CHERUB series, it's quite sad to see the reality of the fact that these characters are on the dawn of growing up and leaving the CHERUB life. In this book it investigates in small depth of what the next step is for James Adams. It teases with the idea that James wants to become a professional con artist in the word of card gambling, more specifically blackjack. What is more, despite the series is drawing to a close, I still feel like our main character still needs more time to grow up, especially with behaviour towards girls. Nevertheless I still love James' mischievous character which is a dynamic Muchamore explores more so than Mad Dogs and Sleepwalker. Also, anyways just because you have to grow up, doesn't mean you to have to grow up.
In conclusion, I very much enjoyed this book as I have so established in this review with both its humour and drama.
Rating: 5/5
