CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Stubborn characters are the only reason this series went for six volumes — but it is fun seeing the different cameos from other CLAMP characters!

Review for the complete series

Kobato has a wish. To have her wish granted, she needs to heal wounded hearts - unfortunately, she doesn't know all that much about the world around her. With the help of Ioryogi - a soft toy dog - Kobato goes on a mission to better understand how the world and the people in it work and always hoping she might heal someone.

Firstly, Kobato is adorable. I absolutely love her design and all her outfits - I'd read this series just for that! But she's also got a very loveable personality. Granted, naive and ditzy characters can get on my nerves, but Kobato is written well; she's such a ray of sunshine and her cluelessness is explained by the plot.

In general, Kobato. is a sweet and fluffy series, there's really very little evil in it - even the villains aren't exactly bad guys. It was a little hard to get into at with how episodic it was; Kobato stumbled from one scenario into the next of trying to understand the world - by that I mean things like how to behave on Christmas or Valentine's Day. Once Kobato ends up as an assistant in a nursery, the plot gains substance and direction.

Although this series can be read by itself, I think those familiar with other CLAMP works can appreciate it more; there are many cameos of other CLAMP figures, in fact, a lot more than any other CLAMP work (Tsubasa not included as that one brings together almost all works). Some of the cameos are very brief but there's just something very satisfying seeing all these characters. Knowing these characters' stories definitely makes their part in Kobato. more meaningful.

The art, of course, is beautiful - I'm tempted to say this is actually one of my favourites among CLAMP's styles. That being said, it does use the long-limbed proportions which were quite prominent in Tsubasa. These unnaturally long limbs never sat quite right with me, so it's actually saying something that I would still consider this one of my favourite styles despite the odd proportions.

Kobato. is a light and endearing read. It's nothing mindblowing, but it doesn't need to be. I'd dearly recommend it to people who generally like CLAMP and their characters, but it can be a nice little read for newcomers as well.

I wrote in my review of the last volume that I hoped the authors would give Kobato's love interest some character development to avoid what would certainly be an abrupt turnaround for his character when he inevitably falls for her, and I'm happy to report that they did! We get a few scenes with Fujimoto actually showing genuine concern for Kobato, and it seems that their apparent dislike for each other is softening. Hooray!
Getting some backstory and context for Ioryogi's predicament was a welcome surprise, and if I had to make a guess I would say he's some sort of fire-based cat demon/spirit. While this wouldn't mean much to other fans, I loved the nod to CLAMP's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure parody comic character, Jouta(?) in the form of the bird spirit that delivers news to Ioryogi. I just thought that was a neat addition.
We learned quite a bit more information surrounding the kindergarten and Sayaka's ex, Something Something Okiura (we don't know his first name). This brings up another issue I have with CLAMP's writing style, which often resorts to "tell, don't show". They were doing pretty well in the other two volumes, but it would have been nice to see Sayaka's backstory rather than have the page filled with speech bubbles. I am enjoying the plot, and I'm curious to see how Kobato handles this new batch of information.
I didn't bring this up last time, but I noticed it in this volume as well. CLAMP is very good at getting character's feelings across through mannerisms and movements. I also like the build-up we've seen regarding the phone at the kindergarten. The reader feels a sense of dread every time it rings since we've only heard the loan shark calling to make threats up until this point, and I like how that expectation was played with a bit in this volume. Nevertheless, I think they should disconnect it, the damn thing never brings any good news.

Secondo me c'è ancora tanto da scoprire. A metà dell'opera la qualità e la storia continuano senza cali. Mi aspetto grandi cose.

-It’s been about a year since I read the last volume of Kobato but jumping in and remembering everything was not hard at all! I enjoyed this volume more than the other two because this volume had more of a story. The last two volumes were just Kobato and Ioryogi meeting a person and helping them and then repeating that cycle.
-After reading Bleach, a shonen manga, it was so nice to get back to Kobato, a shojo manga. I just love the pacing and really letting a moment breath and letting the reader pause and take in the moment. In shonen manga most of the time things are so rushed and compact and I just don’t find that as effective or as appealing. I love the art in the later volumes of Bleach (and I don’t dislike the art in the early volumes either) but reading a shojo by CLAMP is stunning. The way they draw the effects like fire is beautiful and so elaborate. The shading and strong contrasts in light and dark is really used to amplify a moment. It’s just so beautiful, obviously the characters are stunning and even the chibi style characters for joke moments are beautifully done.
-I definitely was more into Fujimoto and Kobato as a couple in this volume than the past one. Fujimoto is that anime type of dude who is a bit tsundere (kind of like Kyo from Fruits Basket but at like a 50% lol) and can be kind of cold to others. But in this volume he was much kinder and mellow than the prior volume. He still has that long rat tail hairstyle but I try to ignore it.
-I very much ENJOYED seeing Touya from CardCaptor Sakura cameo for a moment at Fujimoto’s part time job.
-I enjoyed the scenes of Ioryogi with all the other animal characters.

The plot is thickening. We have character backstories being thrown at us left, right, and centre. And is that a hint of a love story that I see? But all in all, the character no longer annoy me and I'm very excited to see how we're going to deal with certain plot points especially since we are now half way through the story!

The story is picking up! The elementary school story is going on for longer than I expected, still ongoing through Vol 3 in a 6 volume series, and Kobato still only has like 7 pieces in her jar. I wonder when she’s gonna fill it up.

In same ways I'm reminded of Chobits and all the mystery kinda reminds me of Legal Drug. Kinda growing on me. Definitely curious about Ioryogi and Fujimato's histories.

This is a cute series. A girl named Kobato who is working towards becoming an angel has to fill this little jar by healing people's hearts. She gets a job working at a kindergarten, only to have the Yakuza trying to shut it down.

In this volume we learn more about the situation regarding the Kindergarten and why the Yakuza are involved with it. We learn more about Kobato's new friends from the school as well. Meanwhile, Ioryogi (the stuffed dog-looking creature) contacts some old friends to start looking into the situation as well (running into an old enemy (?) along the way).

Like I said, it's cute. Designs look a lot like some of Clamp's other ones (I'm pretty sure the landlady looks a lot like the one from Chobits. And Kobato looks like Sakura with longer hair.). It wouldn't be a surprise - or the first time - Clamp has re-used characters before. God's messenger bunny shows up as well (though not in this volume - in this one, one of the human chars. is dressed up as him though). The story is interesting, but we only learn a little about what's going on. Sadly, it's not a very memorable story. I had it marked as read already, but had no memory of having read it (not sure if it was marked accidentally...), even after re-reading it. It's cute, though. Just not the best volume, I think.

Belum lagi salah satu tokoh yang menurutku terlalu 'lebay', tapi setelah memasuki buku ketiganya, akhirnya plot mulai terbaca, meski misteri siapa itu Kobato masih belum terbuka. Menjelang akhir, bukunya seru lho. Terutama buku kelima dan dipuncaknya, buku keenamnya. Seru!

Bikin bacanya jadi nostalgia sendiri. Worth to read! ;)

I read this book in the series first because they had it at the local used book store. I'm familiar with CLAMP and consider myself to be a fan. This story made some sense considering I started reading it from volume 3. Though I probably would have enjoyed it more if I knew the whole story. I will probably read the rest of this series in the future since this seems like an interesting story.

I continue to not really care for this title. With all the strong(ish) main female characters that Clamp has created Kobato really doesn't fit to me. She is just so clueless and needy you can't even call her a damsel in distress she just becomes a loser.
And v.3 ISN'T the last volume!!
