Kyle McRoy doesn't know who to trust. He became a wealthy man after his parents died in a freak accident, but Kyle lost control. A mental breakdown led to hospitalization in what his brother called a Behavior Therapy Center. While at the center, Kyle meets the lovely Celeste but soon discovers there are things about Celeste he doesn't know. Things that, perhaps, no one can ever know.
Michelle Devon (Michy) has two children, a daughter (24) and a son (18), who refuse to finish baking, no matter how many times she shoves their heads in the oven. Michy is also in love with an identical twin (4?), though she’s not sure which one he is. Her best friend, lovingly known as Buffy (??), rounds out her perfect family of choice, along with three kitty cats, two dogs, and a few invisible friends, along with the people who live inside her head.
Michy was faced with making a choice between her head exploding or becoming successful as a novelist. Determining that the latter would be more painful, she nearly chose the explosion, until she was reminded that the kids were bad at cleaning up messes so she’d just have to do it herself. Novelist it would be.
Diagnosed with congestive heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2011, she has spent most of the past two years learning how to live again after nearly dying twice. If asked what she does for her ‘day job’, she’ll answer, “I’m a full-time professional dreamer…”
When I first saw the title of this book, I thought it was going to be about Celeste. I figured it would be a story about a woman scorned who had lost her ability to trust. The main character is not Celeste, however, she does play an integral part of the story and is a complete mystery. "Celeste" builds on suspense and ends with questions and events that need answers. The reader is left to draw their own conclusions.
The main character is Kyle McRoy, an average guy who is also a millionaire. He does not seem to value material things and just wants to have a life like everyone else. He suffered a mental breakdown caused from his past, and has recovered, or has he? He wants to feel normal and only a woman named Celeste makes him feel that way. She, however, has gone ghost. His attempt at introducing her to his brother fail. She is a no show and the story takes on an unexpected twist. Is Celeste a figment of his imagination? Where has she gone? Who is she really? Michelle Devon has done an expert job in weaving this story, keeping the reader guessing as to what and who to believe. Is Kyle being set up by his brother, his psychiatrist, or Celeste herself? Do they want to cheat him out of his inheritance? Or is Kyle just as crazy as he was before?
“Celeste” captivates you from the very first page. This is a suspenseful, easy to read, must read, could not put it down, type of book. You will enjoy the ride!
Celeste, was one of those stories that I read right through to the end in one sitting. There are several things I liked about this story, for one, the writing was excellent. These days it can be touch and go for what you are going to get when it comes to the writing. Normally in my reviews I concentrate only on the story, but I think it's worth mentioning when the writing is good. Another thing I liked about this story is that it was that you are right there with Kyle in not knowing who to trust or what is real. In many books that you read, you will know what is going on even when the main character does not. This story also has tons of room to be continued and I, for one, am very anxious to see what happens to Kyle next. Michelle L. Devon does a great job with Celeste, just like her other stories that I've enjoyed like The Crazy Cat Lady and Three.
My review might be a little cryptic, but I do not want to give too much away. Shortly into the story, I pretty much guessed things were a certain way, but then changed my mind to thinking that it was another, then flipped back to thinking it was the first way, then flipped my thinking once more. In the end, I had guessed part of the twist but not all. That is the kind of ride this short story will take you on. If you like stories that keep you guessing this is a good one to read. Maybe you will have better luck then I did at figuring this twister out (completely) before you reach the end. Good luck!
Celeste opens with a young man named Kyle trying to find his way in the world following a nervous breakdown. He has a job, a place to live, and a loving brother. All of those are important, but the one thing that makes the others seem obsolete is Celeste.
After meeting during his stay in the hospital, Celeste quickly becomes the perfect woman for his needs and desires. The only catch? He’s afraid to share her with the world. As Kyle’s brother pushes him to introduce his family to Celeste, questions about her and her past begin to stir up feelings of doubt in Kyle’s mind about his own sanity.
One of the more thought provoking novellas I’ve read, Celeste took me back to the days of being a kid when I used to read Tales From the Crypt and other horror/suspense comics. There’s something about a good suspense story that puts a smile on my face. If you’re the same then this is your fix.
If you're looking for a good quick read to take you to another place then this just might be your choice! ;-) It held my attention & kept my curiosity peaked. I was sure I had it all figured out ... up until the very end that is! :) I would definitely read more about Celeste & Kyle if the book were to continue. I did catch myself having to re-read a few sections one more time (just to make sure I read it correctly) as a few small parts threw me a bit. All in all it will definitely make you think & hopefully keep you entertained. :*) Makes you wonder...what is real!?!
This is the first book I've read by Michelle Devon and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. "Celeste" is a fascinating read. What I guessed was happening throughout the story was completely wrong. The twist at the end was amazing and I really wish *I* knew what actually happened. This story will captivate you, keep you turning the pages, and leave you wishing for more!
Really fast paced read.... The story really jumped into the action with all the characters. There wasn't a lot of back story here, except for the occasional tidbits here and there, but overall I didn't really think the story needed it. The ending though was a little confusing for me, but that's just my opinion. In conclusion, good choice if you're looking for something to finish in a day.
