Q Hayashida (林田球, Hayashida Kyu) is a manga author from Tokyo. Hayashida studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has discussed her childhood and artistic inspirations in interviews but maintains a high level of privacy about her personal life, to the point that her true name and face are unknown. Hayashida's first major manga was Maken X Another (1999-2001), a comic book adaptation of a video game. Her most famous work is the 23-volumes long Dorohedoro (2000-2018). It was originally serialised in the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', but it was later moved to 'Hibana' when Ikki ceased publication, and finally transferred to 'Monthly Shōnen Sunday'. Dorohedoro has been partially adapted into an anime on Netflix in 2018. Hayashida's most recent manga series Dai Dark began serialisation in 2019 in the pages of Monthly Shōnen Sunday.

EN What the hell is going on here?!
En’s gang has gone into hiding in an underground shelter after their mansion was seized by the Crossed Eyes gang. From the shadows, they continue plotting their comeback — determined to reclaim their power and recover En.
Meanwhile, Nikaido finally unleashes her full powers, resulting in a colossal mushroom cloud of black dust that blankets the sky.
The Crossed Eyes are now on the hunt for the sorcerer responsible for this ominous display. As they scour the city, every sorcerer in their path becomes a target.
One thing is becoming increasingly clear: there’s a deep and twisted connection between the Crossed Eyes’ leader, Risu, Aikawa… and Caiman.
Part of what I love about Dorohedoro is that there's really no such thing as an incidental character. If someone gets a name, they'll be important to the story somewhere down the line. Like, when Tanba and Fukuyama were introduced what, eight volumes ago (give or take)? I never would have expected them to be recurring characters beyond Blue Night--let alone Kirion, who until this point was always just kind of standing in the background, glaring at someone. And yet, here we are, in volume 14, and they all play integral roles in the plot!
And what a plot it continues to be. Nikaido masters her magic, the leader of the cross-eyes starts a bloody crusade, and Fujita ends up with a lot more responsibility than he bargained for. It's consistently hard to believe that Hayashida can pack so many intersecting storylines into each volume, and to do it so well. A lot of it's still mysterious, and certain things just keep getting weirder (this volume ends in some straight-up Junji Ito territory), but it's a fascinating trip, every step of the way.
This volume was wild, bizarre, weird and beautiful. I can't even wrap my mind around everything that happened. And the art! Q. Hayashida is queen of drawing gore and murder, also her Noi and Nikaido are the hottest women in manga ever. I love the parts about Nikaido and her journey with her powers, everything about the Crosseyes makes my brain heart, this ending sends me. Also also En's crew is an adorable bunch of hopeless idiots whom I love, as always.

In this volume I’m starting to understand how Ai, Aikawa, and Kai intersect, but there is still so much left to be revealed. Dokuga’s doubts foreshadow some traitorous developments from inside the cross eyes gang. Through a terrifying interaction with Jelly (loved him), Nikaido has unlocked her magic and confidence to use it. The ending sequence was blessedly gory, strange and high tension. Meat pie attempted suicide?!

Urgh, why am I liking the cross-eyes boss, what is wrong with me? Imma say it again, this series is so unique and somehow makes all the wackiness top-tier.
Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster
Spell 80 : Eye contact - We see Aikawa attempting to kill himself (to be freed from the nightmare) - The mysterious 'being' reveals that they're a nobody and doesn't actually 'exist'(I'm guessing the headless body controls these different personas e.g Kai & Aikawa but Caiman is actually a mistake? An unexpected turn of events, perhaps?) - Ebisu is a Shin x Noi shipper, I see (Same girl, same!!!!) - Ebisu is seen criticising their new lifestyle with Shin & Noi dolls (her commentary is priceless, as always) - En's family has retreated into an underground base to hide from the cross-eyes - Noi prepares to fix En's body - En's body is fixed but he can't be revived because his devil tumour was stolen & implanted inside the Cross-eyes's Boss - What is left of the family discusses about their future - Sho is seen to be a promising co-leader - Fujita starts thinking about his lack of contribution to En's family - Noi mentions that there's a poisonous gas when the cross-eyes boss spewed En's magic on them - Shin deduces that the gas is similar to Hole's rain and that the cross-eyes boss could be Ai ( remember how it's ironic that the rain makes the sorcerers sick even though it's a byproduct of their own magic smoke!) - They wonder why the devils aren't making a fuss about En's death - We see Haru, Prof Kasukabe and Johnson heading to En's mansion via an alleyway that connects from hell. Prof wants to see the cross-eyes boss - Devils know everything so Haru took them to see him - The boss (Ai) and Prof Kasukabe glance at each other. Prof calls him by his name
Spell 81: Demon's Dinner Table - 16 days prior (to what!): we see Nikaido in her element again, getting ingredients at the market. She looks so badass in her devil's training gear and skateboard - Risu is now living with them at the house. He seems enraged about everything ( this man has anger issues hahaha). Kawajiri invites him to eat - They meet up with Nikaido in the kitchen - Kawajiri seems so proud of his devil certificate. He shows it to Risu ( aww! screw Chidaruma) - Nikaido mentions that she is a friend of Aikawa's and revealed that they met when she tried to kidnap him at En's mansion - We see Dokuga getting nervous & alarmed about Natsuki for not picking up his calls - He must've already suspected that the boss did something to her (While the cross-eyes members seem to care about each other, the Boss only wants to be in power? It's as if he's taking advantage of them but they worship him so they can't really do anything) - Meanwhile, Nikaido shares with Risu about Caiman and how his magic might be involved because the man in Caiman's mouth is Risu - Risu mentions that he has been looking for the cross-eyes member who killed him (the person was cursed) - Kawajiri came up with the conclusion that something must've trapped his curse inside of Caiman - They decided to hold off from telling Risu that Caiman is Aikawa - Kawajiri read the book they stole from En's mansion and shares that Nikaido must generate a lifetime's worth of smoke to use her magic to its potential - When she woke up the next morning, she seems frustrated - She saw Risu outside of her bedroom window and decided to talk to him - Risu asks her about Aikawa and shares that he doesn't actually know anything about him (their partnership is just merely a verbal agreement) - Nikaido wonders why Caiman (as Aikawa) would kill Risu - Back at En's mansion, we see the Boss holding a devil's tumour in a dark room (probably Natsuki's) and Dokuga outside of the door, second-guessing their boss. He is adamant in finding answers (1: why was the boss in Hole when they met? 2: what is black powder? 3: what does it mean to steal other sorcerer's magic? )
Spell 82: Headbangers' Journey - 15 days prior (again, to what?): Nikaido is still in training and is given a helmet by Kawajiri - She starts getting light-headed and proceeds to take a bath and go to sleep. Meanwhile, Risu watches the TV - Kawajiri sleeps inside a Gyoza bed (how adorable is this man! everything about him is just so cute!) - Nikaido is attacked by a monster named 'Jelly' who eats sorcerers. Caiman saved her out of the blue. The two hugs (I MISS THEM TOGETHER PLS REUNITE AGAIN) - Risu has been eaten and Nikaido proceeds to wake Kawajiri from his slumber - Shocked at the sight of Kawajiri, the two left his house on a motorcycle and heads to Hungry Bug (I'm now convinced that this is Nikaido's nightmare) - Caiman asks her to make him Gyoza but En's family seems to haunt her - It turns out Caiman was just an illusion because she asks for it (she really misses him, huh?) - She successfully kills Jelly but got badly injured - 13 days prior: We see Kawajiri and Risu waking her up. She has been asleep for 2 days straight - Kawajiri reveals that the helmet she gave to Nikaido is a diagnostic tool for testing in devil exams. Its aim is to erase a person's innermost fears. He knew that something was holding Nikaido back from using her magic to its full potential due to trauma. If she hadn't confronted her fears, she would go insane. 'Jelly' embodied her fear - Risu asks if she feels different. She took off the helmet to reveal a set of devils horns (it fits her! so is the countdown for when she becomes completely devil or a huge plot twist/ plot development? let's see)
Spell 83 : Ground Zero - Nikaido never formally apply to become a devil so Kawajiri deduces that the horns prove that her magic and mind are at the same level as a devil - Upon confronting her fears and growing a pair of horns, she feels free and that something inside of her has caught fire - She uses her magic (this time with confidence) and this version of Nikaido is not the same as before - Her magic smoke engulfed Asu's house and the rupture caused panic and confusion. It can be seen from En's family underground base and En's mansion too. It sparks curiosity amongst everyone (Nikaido's finally generating a lifetime's worth of smoke to use her magic to its potential!!! GO GIRL GO!!) - We see the boss (being his perverted self) licking the window from En's mansion at the sight of the incredible amount of magic smoke ( I bet he craves for it. This dude's addicted to smoke/powder ew get help, son!) - Kawajiri's house is now in ruins. They catch sight of Nikaido with the final form of the cube - Nikaido wants Kawajiri to bring her to Nebros River (where Yakumo's grave is). Kawajiri asks Risu to look after his house (HAHAHHAHA I laughed so hard when Risu asks 'what house?') - Nikaido finally shares about Yakumo (her trauma) with Kawajiri. She reveals that she went back over and over to save her but never succeeded (so she was stuck in this timeline! I was right! Everyone's life was affected. The timeline from when they were family completely disappeared) - When she faced jelly, she realises that she was running away from her own magic but now she's no longer scared of it. She is adamant to take back what she had lost (OMG IM SO PROUD OF HER) - She brought Asu back in time. Yakumo's grave is gone and we see her floating on the river - She saves her. As her magic had affected those around her greatly, her aunt and uncle never came by the river (like the original timeline). Apparently, Kawajiri had been an orphan staying at a devil church during this period of time - Nikaido's past is erased from each and every timeline and Kawajiri mentions they might run into a younger version of her, attempting to use magic for the very first time. She doesn't want the same mistake to repeat itself and the commotion wakes up the baby. Yakumo has the ability to fly and became out of reach - As Yakumo's magic stops, the baby falls out of the sky into her aunt and uncle having a picnic. They took the baby with them home and just like that, Yakumo is finally saved after all these years of trying - Back at the present, Kawajiri asks Nikaido to search for Yakumo together. We see Yakumo soaring the skies, happily (DAMN, I SOBBED)
Spell 84 : Killing Field - Upon arriving back at Asu's house, Nikaido immediately fell asleep - Risu reveals that he tried out the helmet. He shares his concern with Kawajiri about his magic. Is he using the magic or is the magic taking advantage of him? - Kawajiri advice him to kill the man he had cursed. Somebody else murdered his target and got resurrected. If Risu wants to end this, he needs to complete his curse by finding the person responsible and kill him (I love that Kawajiri is so wise and we can still see a little bit of his devil side despite turning back into a sorcerer) - At En's Family Underground Base, they wonder who is responsible for the 'smoke explosion'. Meanwhile, Sho updates them about a new mission - Their mission is to retrieve En's devil tumour and also figure out the boss's weak points (because everyone has it including the elite sorcerers) - He chose Fujita to spy on the boss (with the help of his invisible power, of course) - Everyone seems to think that Sho chose him because he's the weakest link in the family (if Fujita dies, it won't affect them greatly but still!) - As he prepares to leave, we see the family offering him their magic smoke. Turkey promises to make a Fujita doll if anything happens to him. He is touched by everyone's generosity (they actually care about him, okay???) - We see Ebisu telling Fujita that the family wants him to die (wtf Ebisu hahaha) but as he left, we see her crying asking him to come back safe (aww, poor baby. when will Ebisu return to normal-ish?) - Sho asks Fujita to leave all the gifts behind. He thought that it is because his life is the least important in the family. Sho tells him otherwise. The mission's keyword is timid. He has the best chance of coming back alive. Shin, Noi and Chota would kill someone the moment they see an opening but this mission is to plan and spy on the cross-eyes. Not kill. The other reason Sho chose Fujita is that he loves the family the most (so true, even though he isn't able to make a big contribution, he respects everyone ) -The two says their goodbyes and Sho used his magic to turn him invisible - 11 days prior: We see Prof Kasukabe and Haru sleeping at the Devil's penthouse. Prof sneaks out with Johnson to find Ai because Haru seems to be keeping him away from finding out the truth? (Devils know everything so could it be the reason? Will Ai harm Prof Kasukabe?) -En's mansion is now called 'En's former mansion'. I've been wondering about this since his death. Hahaha. Okay, at the sauna in En's former mansion, the cross-eyes discusses the smoke they saw the other day (The explosion caused by Nikaido). They don't know what the boss is doing alone in his room. Tetsujo plans to increase the mansion's security in case something happens - Meanwhile, Ton asks Dokuga about Natsuki. He remains silent. Tetsujo reassures Ton that she is fine. However, Saji shares with them a curious strange sound at the statue - The rest of the gang deduces that it sounds like a cellphone. Dokuga tries calling Natsuki and they hear the ringtone coming from inside. They break the base with force - Dokuga knows it's Natsuki and stops the gang from looking inside ( something smells rotten and is surrounded by flies). Saji is surprised to find mushrooms and didn't think much about it at first (it's En's house anyway) but his face quickly changed once he sees someone's hair on it - Before they learn more about the mushrooms or Natsuki's fate, we see the boss with a sinister look on his face. He utters 'let's go'. He finally left his room and the members look surprised by this - 5 days prior: Apparently, the boss has been going around the realm killing a lot of sorcerers. This is what he meant by 'let's go'. He is trying to find Nikaido (the one who caused the explosion to steal her magic). We see other cross-eyes members cleaning up his mess. They think that the boss is crazy but all they can do is follow orders. The inner circle is also with the boss helping him kill these sorcerers. A non-member tries to provoke & fight with the boss only to get killed. The boss advises them to ignore those who run (scared of him?) and kill those who fight. He just wants the confident ones - 2 days prior: we see Tanba again! Yay! The cross-eyes have scared a lot of people so they haven't gotten any customers in awhile - Fukuyama advises them to leave as the cross-eyes will come for them. They see more and more people leaving the city - The cross-eyes eventually arrive at the restaurant. Tanba hides Fukuyama and he and Kirion fights the cross-eyes (I want to know more about Kirion! We don't know much about her). Tanba deserves the employer of the year award! Such a great boss - The Boss enters the restaurant and Fukuyama remembers him from the prisoner's hand tattoo - Tanba attempts to fight him off but got pinned down along with Kirion - Fukuyama uses his magic despite being asked to hide by his boss
Spell 85 : Morphing - The cross-eyes are slowly wiping off the sorcerer's population - The inner-circle questions about the boss's motives - Dokuga senses a presence but quickly shrug it off (Fujita, is that you?) - Fukuyama's magic is amazing! He was able to fight off the members. The Boss started spewing/vomiting black blood (which I assume is also sludge?) - Fukuyama turns the boss's knives into pies (hahaha cute!). The boss proceeds to use his smoke and Fukuyama tries to hold it off with his own magic - Tanba learns that the black blood is actually something oil-based and used fire to defeat the boss (yesssss Tanba! I have faith in you!) - The substance is indeed flammable (I love Tanba & his big brain!). While the boss is getting roasted like chicken, Tanba asks Fukuyama to turn him into a pie while the boss's magic is running out -The room turns hazy and distorted. This affected the sorcerers greatly. Before the crispy Boss is able to kill Fukuyama, Kirion sliced his bacon-like face. It didn't fall off, however. He didn't die? - Upon arriving at Tanba's restaurant, the cross-eyes inner circle is distraught by the sight of their boss - Kirion sees different devil tumours inside of his head. Sludge/blood starts spewing and we see several different heads growing (too creepy for me to count!) - The heads eventually disappear and we see the headless body turn into Aikawa. This confuses the cross-eyes - This Aikawa (seems to know Fukuyama. Fukuyama even recognise his voice. I think it's Caiman). He asks him to hit him with smoke - I think this Aikawa (at least this persona is asked to be freed because he no longer wants to be a part of some weird elaborated plan). He turns into a pie with a smile on his face and we see Dokuga running after him
Solid volume! I loved it from the start. One of my favourites!!

This was an enjoyable volume mainly because of the focus on Nikaido and the background to her magic, with a cool dream sequence that delivered plenty of weirdness. Having her finally gain some control over her magic was a nice development and it was fun getting to see her cut loose after all this time. The ending battle between Ai and En's family was gloriously gruesome and disgusting. The scenes of Ai getting his face cut off, and then sprouting multiple gore covered heads all twisting around each other could have come out of a Junji Ito manga, so well done.
such a good volume!! awesome characters, worldbuilding, development and art style improvement (yeah, i'm gay. keep scrolling). couldn't be more proud of hayashida's work and i can't wait to see it being animated.
This is the volume that I have been waiting for. I don't think I've ever rated a Dorohedoro volume 5 stars ever, but this volume really deserves 5 stars.
This volume finally answered a lot of questions.
80 - the opening pages of the chapter really fueled my confusion, curiosity, and motivation to continue with the story (but tbh, i never thought of dropping the manga EVER. it's just that i get so confused by the hints, and i feel so stressed and anxious for some reason. the En family POV in this chapter gave me hopes that the family will rise again (yay!). 80 ended in such an exciting note (which confirmed a lot of my assumptions!), so of course i immediately read the succeeding chapter.
81 - particularly liked this chapter because dokuga seems like he's finally questioning the cross eyes boss' goals. even before this chapter, i already rooted for dokuga (especially when i found out the real intentions of the boss), so his parts in this chapter really made me look forward to how his character will progress with the storyline. nikaido POV in this chapter showed answers! a lot of answers! it confirmed a lot of my assumptions from the different hints provided in the previous chapters, which of course, made me happy (hahaha).
82 - actually, this chapter weirded me out because i had no idea what was happening. everything made sense when kawajiri explained the situation. last page was an exciting (and interesting!) reveal.
83 - focus on nikaido and her past! finally answered almost everything i was being confused at regarding nikaido and asu relationship. not a mind-blowing revelation but i still still liked the reveal. i wonder if yakumo will have roles in the future..? nikaido was extra beautiful in this chapter. the cross eyes boss continued to be annoying (lol).
84 - En family focus to start the chapter! En family finally having a plan (without En!). actually, i though shin would have the initiative to lead, turns out dude is a follower and shou is the leader-type character. shou's plan was nice, but his choice was... predictable (hahaha). not mad about it though, i liked it! this focus on the En family really touched my heart (? is that the right description) because even if they made it seem like Fujita is still the useless one (I'm still not sure and the story has not yet revealed why he seems like a powerless sorcerer), I still loved how everyone showed that they really care for Fujita (let's go, En family!). fujita spotlight made me wonder how his character will progress in the story... reveal on natsuki status made me feel like dokuga WILL have a change of heart. cross eyes boss actions finally getting to the other elite members. made me look forward to what will happen to these elites... last few pages really stressed the hell out of me. cross eyes barging in the tanba's really made me anxious. last page with fukuyama made me want to stop reading because it got me scared of the following events (that are about to happen in the next chapter).
85 - elite's POV on the mass killings gave me hope that maybe, they will have character development... PLEASE. action in this chapter: fukuyama challenging the cross eyes boss - liked it, but made me anxious as hell. tanba and kirion moments also stressed me out. reveal about the boss's nature gave me hope for the characters... especially when he finally transformed back into aikawa. this bit really made me emotional (i honestly had teary eyes lol).
an amazing and interesting way to end the volume. the reveals and the action in this volume really led me to giving it 5 stars. and to eventually writing a long review about it. hahahahaha.

Next pieces of mystery are getting showed but I’m getting tired. It’s too long at this point. I’ll finish it, I’m pretty sure, but still. I like it a lot. Aesthetics, humour, overall distance to everything - it’s great. But it’s too long and I’m disengaging. So I guess the grading will be gradually going lower for me because that’s how I feel would be honest reflection of my feeling towards the series: it’s too difficult for me to grade volume by volume so I have overall grade for the series which holds per volume and it fluctuates as I go. And as I’m getting tired (because it’s too long to reveal the mystery like for many long shonen/seinen series) this will be probably going down but who knows? Maybe it’ll hold. After all what’s great is that Dorohedoro doesn’t treat itself too seriously and even if it’s super grim and super humorous around it it’s not super serious and tense like other series around so I feel it’ll hold in higher esteem with me. Let’s see.
Nikaido learns more about her magic and Fujita is sent on a dangerous trip by himself! I like Mr. Sho and I hope he really is as good as he appears to be, but this is Dorohedoro so my eyes will be on him. That scene with Nikaido and Jelly was sooo uncomfortable for me. My favorite part was definitely when Fujita was about to head off and everyone started giving him gifts to help him. I was bawling.
UGGHGHGHGHHGHG what the fuck! OK so: Kai is Ai, Nikaido has horns (also she saved her friend), LITERAL GENOCIDE ARC, the badass return of the meatpie shop (for some reason this scene made me emotional) and then AI TURNED INTO AIKAWA????!? BUT THEN AIKAWA GOT TURNED INTO A PIEEE! dlijfoskdjnfsdkfhj where does this leave us ???? What will happen next ???? THAT PIE SHOP SCENE ALONE OH MY GOD! also Fujita leaving to go on his mission was a sweet scene, Ebisu is just so consistently hilarious, Dokuga and the other elite magic users have to rebel against Ai (I assume Ai is in fact not dead at all) also Im loving the countdown to Aikawas freakout thing, rly reminds me of Mob Psycho 100 with the percentage until next freakout thing, effortlessly creates tension and suspense! I will say i rly miss Kaiman this feels like Twin Peaks the Return with Cooper
favourite volume, love seeing every character popping up, nikaido’s transformation and finally being able to use her magic and save her friend, the story continues to unfold in an unexpected, confusing but also really interesting and surprising way!!! dorohedoro doesn’t make me feel like reading manga at all but myself in an unique and immersive experience!!! by the way i notice a slice difference in the art style, it’s still very appealing and detailed but it’s less chaotic? should i say there are more clarity or is it me slowly getting used to the art??!
This has been one of the best volumes of Dorohedoro for a while. We can some great character development for Nikaido and the boss of the cross-eyes, the plot moves forward a little and resolves (or at least further explores) a few of the mysteries that have built up in earlier volumes, there's a bit of biffo and some of the quirky humour we've come to love of Dorohedoro. It was well worth battling through a couple of weaker volumes to get to this one.
At several points during this volume I had to stop and go "oh, DAMN". This manga's so good, it's so nasty and fun and strange and only juuuuuuuuuust coherent enough to be properly gripping. It should have collapsed under its own weight ages ago but it keeps going with immense confidence.
I'm fucjing shocked. I don't fucking know where this plot is going. But I'm one hundred percent sure slice of life is completely gone (except extra evils) This is crazy. I just want everybody to be friends...
