Q Hayashida (林田球, Hayashida Kyu) is a manga author from Tokyo. Hayashida studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has discussed her childhood and artistic inspirations in interviews but maintains a high level of privacy about her personal life, to the point that her true name and face are unknown. Hayashida's first major manga was Maken X Another (1999-2001), a comic book adaptation of a video game. Her most famous work is the 23-volumes long Dorohedoro (2000-2018). It was originally serialised in the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', but it was later moved to 'Hibana' when Ikki ceased publication, and finally transferred to 'Monthly Shōnen Sunday'. Dorohedoro has been partially adapted into an anime on Netflix in 2018. Hayashida's most recent manga series Dai Dark began serialisation in 2019 in the pages of Monthly Shōnen Sunday.
Há imensas cenas brutais neste volume, e no geral, pareceu-me especialmente intenso.

EN The Cross-Eyes boss undergoes a bizarre transformation, and honestly, I have no idea where this is heading.
The connection between Caiman, Aikawa, and Risu seems to be reaching some sort of conclusion — but this is Dorohedoro, so it's hard to say for sure.
There are plenty of brutal scenes in this volume, and overall, it felt especially intense.
Dorohedoro can be a tough story to follow without digging into online explanations after certain chapters — and I do think that’s a real issue. When a narrative demands outside research just to make sense of it, something gets lost in the experience.
I don't know… I’m still feeling pretty conflicted, but this volume, in particular, felt like a bit too much for me.
This is a darker and grittier volume than those that came before it. We find out what happened before Aikawa's breakdown in an incredibly well-paced manner.
I appreciate the the author wants to switch things up after 15 volumes. Even so, I can't really follow what is happening, which makes me admire the scenery, which is a bit wanting. Hoping it picks up in the new few volumes.
Also, why are the female characters (and only the female characters) always in a state of undress? I understand that this is probably common in most manga, but I had hoped one by a female author would be a little less gaze-y.
There are parts of this volume that are pure nightmare fuel. Hayashida has always had a unique visual style, but seeing her delve into body horror really unveils a new layer to her talent. It seems paradoxical that something so utterly grotesque can be a selling point, but it's hard to really express how striking the art in Dorohedoro has gotten, without actually showing it.
And while this volume is a visual knockout, I'm happy to say the story keeps pace in spades. The countdown that's been going on for the past volume or two finally reaches zero, and...the end result raises more questions than answers. But if you've read this far in the series, you know that's par for the course. But it sets up a sense of imminent dread that I can't wait to see revealed--especially because I know that what happens will defy my expectations.
I spend half my time with this manga thinking things like what the fuck is going on? or which character is that? and the other half just reveling in the weirdness and gloppy body horror. At this point I really have no clue what Hayashida intends the reader to understand about Caiman/Ai/Aikawa/cross-eyes boss or whatever. Is the six headed (or is it eight) flayed body monstrosity the same as Caiman or not. I've got no fucking clue, but the drawings sure are gross and cool.
Almost the mystery of Kaiman is revealed, Nikaido's magic becomes more previous, the rain in the magic world was chilling knowing it shouldn't rain there, I also like how all our main groups went back to Hole, I'm anticipating several showdowns.
This was darker volume than usual, so the extra evil at the end was a nice treat. Body horror abound, there were some genuinely unsettling panels (thank you, Curse). I enjoyed the fun reversal of the incredible Aikawa/skin suit creature - whom even devils find impressive - just bumbles around and says « guhh » (for now). Lucky for him, the cross eyes remain loyal despite not being sure of his identity.

( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)
All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts! I have the memory of a goldfish.
[RE-READ] SEPTEMBER 2021 TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror, abduction, suicide, nudity Rating: 5 stars
Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster
Spell 86: Placekicker -The Cross-Eyes attempts to save their boss by killing Fukuyama. Fukuyama's smoke ran out so Saji was turned into a man-pie - A vase flew on its own out of the blue. This distracted the cross-eyes and Kirion kicked the pie outside. The cross-eyes decided to bail to save the Boss and Saji. Dokuga looks over Aikawa's mask once more - Kirion treated Fukuyama's injuries and Tanba asks Kirion about her air tricks but she remained silent. As they start cleaning the restaurant, Fukuyama wonders about the boss: how his voice sounded just like Caiman. Dokuga still sense someone's presence (I'm sure it was Fujita's doing) - We see Prof Kasukabe and Johnson disguising themselves as Cross-Eyes at En's mansion. (I love that he's the only one who understands what Johnson is saying lol) - The cross-eyes members found out that the boss didn't return with the inner circle (lol, he got turned into a pie hahaha) - They search for Noi's smoke in the mansion to reverse the effect. They have a problem though. Saji is the one who is responsible for safe-keeping all the treasures, including smoke. Only he knows where they are - They found Chota's magic in En's trash with a somewhat disturbing letter. They gathered all the ingredients to use the magic (it's the same recipe for when Chota reversed the magic on Noi). They decided to use it on Saji first - Saji is finally back to his normal self and quickly gets Noi's healing smoke to cure their boss - ITS 1 DAY PRIOR TO SOMETHING BIG (WHAT IS IT)
Spell 87: Messy Skull - As Aikawa is being resurrected from the dead, we see a lot of versions of his body. He thought that everything would be over but it's not. We see the headless body (I'm convinced it's Ai) again and Aikawa asking him (it?) for the nth time who he is - He wakes up from his slumber? death? thanks to Noi's healing smoke and seems agitated by his revival. He mentions that they 'f*cked up'. The gang is confused by his lack of cross-eyes marks and face (which is exactly the same as their boss) - Aikawa intends to leave but Dokuga forcefully made him stay. The cross-eyes intends to figure out what their boss really is - Johnson brought Prof Kasukabe to the cross-eyes boss via his sense of smell. They see him tied up and gagged in a jail cell. Johnson's friend (from last time) helped unlock the door - Prof proceeds to help him. Aikawa doesn't recognise Kasukabe at first but when he introduced himself and mentions the name 'Ai Coleman', he remembers the headless body's face! (I knew it was Ai!) - As memories start rushing back, Aikawa's head defuses, yet still attached to the body. We see another head growing (badly injured and lifeless). It is attempting to go somewhere
Spell 88 : Strange Love - As the body (still tied) is crawling closer towards Prof Kasukabe, his serial plate fell off. Prof recognises it from before - Prof Kasukabe had confirmed the number of the plate 15 years prior. When they opened the coffin to insert it into the body, they found the corpse rapidly deteriorating as it had been soaking in drain water all night (He looks bad! When they closed the coffin, the corpse looks alive) - Prof and Johnson followed the body - We see Dokuga alone at the statue to retrieve Natsuki's body. He wonders where her head is. He sees an opening at the back wall and decided to check it out - Prof entered a big room filled with nothing but sorcerers heads. Every single head is hollow and has a hole in it (Their devil's tumour was probably taken just like En's) - Prof being a professor remains unfazed. He grew curious and became more and more interested - The body then takes them to another room. This time, it's filled with IV drips with black smoke. Inside the drips, there are devil's tumours. These IV drips are then revealed to be connected to something curious. It's neither a human nor a sorcerer. - Prof removed the restraint straps on Ai and sets him free (Bad move, doc! Bad move!!!) - He asks Ai what he's trying to become. Aikawa's head attempts to stop Prof from questioning him. Prof was then killed by Ai. Johnson got injured too - We see Haru witnessing the whole thing (I think she knew Prof was in danger) - We see 'Ai's f*cked up head' gone and was replaced again by Aikawa's (WTF). Aikawa seems to not remember anything and is getting frustrated. He came across what seems to be Natsuki's head (?) stored inside a jar
Spell 89 : Day Zero - So the countdown is finally over! What is going to happen? I'm scared. Prof and Johnson are still laying on the floor, stunned and lifeless. Aikawa looks over Natsuki's head and leaves the room. He claims that there's nothing he can do and he will just forget about everything again anyway - Dokuga deduces that an intruder has broken down the boss's door. Aikawa hides. Tetsujo shares with Dokuga about what they found at the explosion site and they found Kawajiri's devil certificate. When they poked around, Kawajiri's neighbour mentions seeing a woman and a big man - Aikawa has been eavesdropping and he suddenly remembers the faces of Nikaido, Risu & Kawajiri - Ton alerted the two that Aikawa is gone. Dokuga senses a presence before leaving the room (I swear this man has spidey instincts) - Haru proceeds to sing before reviving Prof and Johnson (read the room, girl!). Prof seems to be entertained by her singing this time, though. She promises to save him if he forgets about his important research (you're gonna revive him either way, anyway!) - Meanwhile, Nikaido, Kawajiri & Asu seeks shelter at a hotel. They're trying to stay away from the cross-eyes because they know they're looking for Nikaido (the person who caused the explosion) - Risu asks Nikaido to bring him to Hole (to find who cursed him in the past) - In another part of En's mansion, we see the same scene from the opening chapter of volume 14. It is when Aikawa is attempting to kill himself. He said that it's finally over but we see that it starts to rain
Spell 90: Eyewitness - Nikaido, Kawajiri and Risu heads to Hole before it starts raining in the realm (I love that Risu doesn't know what an umbrella is hahaha) - Fujita (still invisible) sees Aikawa's dead body. He assumes that En's devil tumour is inside of him. However, the corpses' face starts to shift. The sorcerer's realm then rains for the very first time - We see Ai regenerating the top of his body and looking over Aikawa rising out of one of the coffins filled with sludge - We were shown some of Aikawa's memories with Risu and Ai falling deeper into the pit of toxins. We also see him working back at Prof's clinic. His goal is to erase his original self and be someone totally different. He claims that the Hole isn't for him. We thanks a certain sorcerer? and his reflection shows Aikawa on the other side of the door. This is when he starts his life as Aikawa? Although he is thankful to this unknown sorcerer (I'm guessing this someone gave him another chance to live? yet he also wants the cycle (immortality) to stop? - The rain affected the sorcerers greatly. It doesn't seem to affect Kirion (is she human??) - Sho reveal that he also has the power to erase memories (I need some memories erased, Sho. Help me). The family starts feeling weird. Shin is half-human so it doesn't affect him that much. Shin then finds out that it's raining in the realm - The devils finally showed themselves! Where have ya'll been in this chaos, huh? - Haru saves Prof and Johnson and is shocked at the sight of the weird monster suit that was connected to all the IV drips - Chidaruma seems happy about the turn of events -Nikaido has a bad feeling upon arriving at Hole
Spell 91 : Evil Makeover - Fujita passed out due to the rain. He finds that the body is gone. Devils seem to swarm around 'Aikawa'. - We see the window of the room with the wall of sorcerers heads smashed. The room is slowly filled with rain. Dokuga sees the boss's head in the wall of heads and proceeds to 'save' him - There are no cross-eyes marks on him, however. The body emerges from the wall and we see different heads (eight in total) hovering but still attached to the body. Cross-eyes marks returned on his face too - Fujita sees the sliced head in the mix but this time, there are no devils tumour in it - The boss then 'fuses' himself with the monster suit that was attached to the IV drips - We see his body rapidly generating and growing. He turns into a curious-looking monster with several heads
Spell 92 : Whole in one - Chidaruma watches the boss's transformation through a looking mirror? (Chidaruma is omniscient. I want the mirror too, please). He seems impressed. Meanwhile, the boss's inner circle seem scared and confused - The Boss opened a portal door and attempts to escape (the door is too small). He plans to go to Hole ( the gang decided to help him find a door that fits) - Meanwhile, En's family underground hideout is slowly being destroyed because of the rain. Shin attempts to save everyone from getting buried alive. (How strong is he? He carried four of the staff wtf and managed to save Noi and Ebisu too) - With nowhere to go, Shin recommend going to Hole temporarily to get out of the rain - The gang drags the boss to the door (the one En had installed for those who can't produce smoke to conjure one) and advanced to hole - One of the cross-eyes members follow a trail of black powder and sees the gang running to Hole - Nikaido, Kawajiri and Risu arrive at Hole. They stumbled upon Nikaido's old customers and friends along the way. Everyone thought that Risu is Caiman! Hahahaha. They do have similar physiques (height, build and all that). Risu seems enraged - They find Thirteen in front of Nikaido's old restaurant - The restaurant is dirty but still standing - Nikaido reveal to the team that she can't make any smoke at all. It seems that her smoke got sucked back into her 'cube' - Meanwhile, elsewhere in Hole, En's family and the cross-eyes arrive at the city of illusions too
Spell 93 : Remaining Bullets - En's family complains about Hole (the second they got there lol) - They made sure to keep En's body in a safe place - 1km away from En's family, the cross-eyes try finding food for their boss while Dokuga stays - Nikaido and friends attempt to learn more about her cube. Apparently, she can't use her magic without it. When she opened it, it reveals five chambers of smoke. One's cracked because it was used to save Yakumo. She can only use her magic four more times - Thirteen still has a crush on her but when the wind blew off her hoodie, it revealed her cute horns (even he thinks so!!!) but thirteen quickly became scared when she mentions 'devil' hahaha. They said their goodbyes - Risu doesn't want Nikaido to waste her magic on him. Nikaido and Kawajiri finally told Risu that Caiman is Aikawa. Risu runs away but still doesn't think Aikawa was the one who killed him. He remembers the person having cross-eyes - We see humans attempting to kill Risu but he defeated them with ease using his Curse magic. He was quickly stopped by Nikaido (mother Nikaido! Risu can act like such a child!). She has decided to bring him to the past back to that alley (where headless Caiman was found)
Bonus chapter: Okay fine... I admit that Chidaruma is actually quite hilarious. We see En starting a revolution in Hell too (this man was born to lead! I miss En actually...) The devil shares the steak (gifted by En). We still see Haru with that Butcher knife from before.

I’m a broken record but at this point this might hold weight to be one of my favourite mangas of all time. truly a perfect blend of everything and the articulation is constantly met with detail to match. Arguably as well told as Yu Yu Hakusho.
ok this is fucking junji ito at this point, seriously also reminds me of bloodborne when the blood moon rises, idk the rain in magic user realm and the gathering of the devils and the flood of heads turning into that monster, it feels like the fabric of everything is ripping,,,, so aikawa = kai = ai = kaiman but then how does risu/ curse fit in other than aikawa killing him? when risu kills those hole humans, fucking bruuuutal, also fujita is making an amazing spy as we see most of this from his perspective. it rly feels like everytihng is coming to a head i can hardly bear it.
There is so much plot going on and usually I would be overwhelmed by all the overlapping plot lines 🫨 It’s only because the series is written so well that I’m able to retain pertinent knowledge of how the universe works, and even smaller tidbits mentioned several volumes before are coming back and being relevant now. I really love how everything introduced has a purpose, every character who has a name (or multiple names 🤔) plays a role. I am so in love with this story 👼🏻💖
Okay so the countdown finally reaches zero and I have even more questions than I did before. Poor Aizawa really can't catch a break! I could really go without seeing Ebisu's naked body for the rest of my life. This story is so great, nudity is not necessary! However, my wife Noi is gorgeous though! Asu and Nikaido finally tell Risu the truth about Aizawa.
Hineslty, I think binging this series in one go would be good to keep up with the plot line since it can be really confusing if you are someone who can forget names of people often. BUT ITS SO GOOD. Can’t wait til I buy vol 16 and keep going!
Esta serie no hace sino ponerse mejor. El misterio que rodea al jefe está por explotar. Los demonios están coludidos, o al menos saben qué está ocurriendo. Todos a Hole. Necesito el siguiente tomo ya.

Some of the gnarliest artwork yet. Gotta love a shambling mass, am I right fellas? Also the return to Hole is sweet, and is going to be a terrible mess. Nikaido has adjusted remarkably well to her new role, but then she was always fairly level-headed.
finally the first volume that isn't a reread and my head hurts. so much going on and im not sure most of it makes too much sense at this point. its a good thing i reread b/c i would have been even more lost than i am currently
Still the best manga series I'm reading this year. This volume is heavy on the gore, but that's a plus in my book. And we basically have most of the mysteries explained at this point, can't wait to see what the author DOES with those explanations.
