This book is based on the written accounts of mostly British servicemen who fought in Italy. Sometimes the accounts fit within the chronology of the Italian campaign and sometimes they don’t. Also since it is mostly British the history is mostly from the British point of view and participation, with very little of the American participation and almost nothing of the Canadian participation. To read the almost exclusively American participation point of view, Rick Atkinson’s “Day of Battle” is excellent. Still the personal accounts were sometimes relevant and often interesting (many were unedited for military jargon). What this book also lacked was good maps. There are a few general maps at the front, but they sometimes didn’t have all the towns and villages, that were mentioned, on them and. One had to speculate on the course of the battle or campaign. For a really general history from the British point of view of the Italian campaign, this book will suffice.
