Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

Mittayi Theruvu was one of my favourite haunts for stories during my days as a reporter in Kozhikode. Pottekkatt has set an entire book on the lives of many connected to thaat street, from the ragpickers to the shopkeepers and the unfortunate ones who are forced to sleep on the shop verandahs. And ofcourse the more fortunate ones whose lives are intertwined with those in the streets. My favourite character is ofcourse the man who makes a living by selling newspapers in the street, the man who picks out the one sleazy news story from the day's paper and screams it out to make the people buy it out of curiosity. Just the kind of method used by online media these days to get hits. But then, thats's the only humorous part about his story, which is otherwise one of failures, disappointment and poverty.

ചുറ്റും നടക്കുന്ന ജീവിതങ്ങളെ വീക്ഷിച്ചു,ഒരു കേന്ദ്ര കഥാ പാത്രമായി തെരുവ് നിൽക്കുന്നതായിട്ടു തോന്നി; ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു തുടർച്ചയായി.

തുടക്കം മുതൽ തന്നെ നമ്മൾ തെരുവിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം ആവും. തെരുവിന്റെ മക്കൾ നമുക്ക് സുപരിചിതരാവും, നമ്മൾ അവരോടൊപ്പം തെരുവിൽ ജീവിക്കും.

തെരുവിൻ്റെ കഥ/ദേശത്തിൻ്റെ കഥ, കൂടുതൽ ഇഷ്ടമേതെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ഈ പ്രായത്തിലിനി ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാവില്ല എന്നു കരുതിയാണ് re-read ചെയ്തത്. ഒരു കാര്യോം ഉണ്ടായില്ല. 😂

"പാടത്തിനപ്പുറത്തു അകലെ, പറമ്പുകളിലെ യും, കുന്നിൻചേരുവുകളിലെയും, തെങ്ങിൻതോപ്പുകളുടെ പച്ച വിതാനങ്ങൾ പല പതനങ്ങളിലായി കാണുന്നു. അവയ്ക്കപ്പുറം ആകാശനീലിമയും മലനിരകളുടെ മങ്ങിയ കോലങ്ങളും അലിഞ്ഞുചേർന്ന ചക്രവാളമാണ്. രണ്ട് ലോകങ്ങളുടെ സമ്മേളനമാണ് ആ ചക്രവാളം. ഒന്ന് യാഥാർത്ഥ്യത്തിന്റേത് മറ്റേത് സങ്കൽപ്പത്തിന്റേത്. ആ ആകാശവും അതിന്റെ അഗാധശൂന്യതയ്ക്ക് ആവരണം ചാർത്തുന്ന നീലിമയും വെറും സങ്കല്പമാണ്. അങ്ങനെ പകുതി യാഥാർത്ഥ്യവും പകുതി സങ്കല്പവും ഒത്തുചേർന്ന ഒരു ചക്രവാളമാണ് മനുഷ്യജീവിതം."

Another master piece from S.K.Pottekkatt. An awesome read. The story depicts a street in Malabar (I think it is Mittayi Theruvu, not sure though) and the people who are regular visitors of the street. The novel implicitly says the only truth is death.

One of its kind. This book tells the story of the famous Mitaay Theruv or the SM Street at Kozhikode. While reading this we become one among the different people who live on the streets. We will surely enjoy the life of these abandoned people. A very well framed and character rich book from SK Pottekkatt.

Good read but very predictable and mundane

The kind of story that stays with you even after you finish reading it. All the characters, their emotions, and even the most trivial things have been described in such a beautiful way. It does get a bit slow at times, but it is worth the patience.The ending just broke my heart. Life, beyond death.
This will remain the best book I've read this year.

Oru theruvinte kadha (The story of a street), as the name implies is the tale of a street, located in real life as Mittayi theruvu (Sweetmeat Street), in the Kasaragod district in Kerala.

Malayalam writers, like their counterparts in India, as well as around the world, have a penchant of falling in love with a particular place or local where they were born or spent a lot of their life in. Be it the fabled land of Khasak in O.V. Vijayan’s ‘Khasankinte Ithihasam ഖസാക്കിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം Khasakkinte Ithihasam (The Legends of Khasak)’, or current day Mahe, immortalized by M. Mukundan in ‘മയ്യഴിപ്പുഴയുടെ തീരങ്ങളിൽ Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil’ (On the banks of the River Mayyazhi). Add to that another, from Malayalam’s beloved globetrotting travel writer S.K. Pottekkatt.

Strangely I’m reminded of a phrase from the 2012 cult classic ‘Dredd’, describing Mega City One,

‘You know what Megacity one is, Dredd? It’s an f***ing meat grinder. People go in one end, meat comes out the other. All we do is turn the handle’.

Weird comparison right?

But in a way, in a much less grotesque and more sobering manner the street where the tale, or tales are being told is a microcosm, a revolving door of human mannequins. Stage actors, who play the lead roles in the plays of their own life, and once their performance is done, vacate it for the next performer.

The street is indeed a conglomeration of countless such colorful characters. Those compatriots who grew in a rustic pre-information era locality might relate to what I am referring to. Everyone of us had that one person in the locality, an eccentric character through birth or circumstance, who was the object of novelty. The ‘Omanjis’, the ‘Thatta kaiyan Kittans’, ‘The Shravu Aayishas’, ‘Koonan Kanarans’ and such. Pottekkatt, either through his real life interactions of imagination, consolidated their stories into an interconnected weave.

We are told an anthology of tales, of the rich and the poor, or the educated and illiterate, of those happy and those suffering, some struggling to make it through each day, others leading a carefree life. All of these threads whose nexus is the street, all either live there, pass through it, or are connected to it in some inexorable way. Be it the street urchins who turn the market into their lodgings once dusk settles, and scamper around it when the sun is up in search of food remains and money. Or the uber rich, who have no reason to venture into the street, but, in the cover of darkness, approach it while masquerading themselves, in search of the pleasures of the human flesh, and trying to satiate some unspeakable dark desires.

Another constant shared by all of the characters, is the inexplicable advent of death, the tactless stage clown, who manifests itself at the most inconvenient times. It takes away a player in the stage, while the rest are indifferent to this loss, having been turned numb by the unpredictability of existence. Or rather, it would be more appropriate to say that they are concerned with more immediate issues, such as finding the day’s sustenance, and meeting the familial woes of life, or even those who have it all, trying to fill something lacking in their hearts.

While we start with tales from different characters, in time the person who would serve as our window into the street is made apparent, as the newspaper salesman, Krishna Kurup, or Kurup for short, and ‘Vishamastiti’ owing to his penchant for embellishing the stories in the papers to make them sell out. Much of the stories which we spectate are either directly involving him, or have him as a spectator, much like us.

In each chapter, we learn of a new character, with different personalities, whose entire life is summarized quite briefly and snippets are given as windows into their lives. Oftentimes, their stories intersect, ending in misery for one, and fortune for the other.

The stories end as abruptly as they start, with yet another day at the street, for these tales have been advent even before we started reading, and will continue much after us. Such is the human condition.

ഈ തെരുവിൽ വേദനകൾ ഉണ്ട്, സന്തോഷമുണ്ട്, സങ്കടമുണ്ട്, കളിയുണ്ട്, ചിരിയുണ്ട്,പട്ടിണിയും പരിവട്ടവും ഉണ്ട്, പകയുണ്ട്, രക്തചൊരിച്ചിൽ ഉണ്ട്, ലൈംഗിക വൈകൃതങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട് ,സഹാനുഭൂതിയും നിസഹായാവസ്ഥയുമുണ്ട്, ഇവിടെ സ്വാതന്ത്രയവും, സമത്ത്വവും സമത്ത്വമില്ലായമയുണ്ട്.
നഗരത്തിലെ അഴുക്കുചാലുകളിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വികാരങ്ങളും വിചാരങ്ങളും വളരെ ഭംഗിയായി വരച്ചുകാട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു കുത്തൊഴുക്ക് തന്നെയാണീ തെരുവ്.... രക്തവും മാംസവും ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യജീവികൾ... ജീവിതമെന്ന നാടകത്തിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ വേഷങ്ങൾ ജീവിച്ച്‌ മരണമെന്ന സത്യത്തിലേക്ക് അന്തർദ്ധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ജീവികൾ...കാലം കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോൾ ഇവർ നിലനിന്നിരുന്നുവെന്ന അടയാളങ്ങൾ പുതിയ വേഷങ്ങൾ മായ്ക്കുന്നു... അങ്ങനെ അത് തുടരുന്നു..... തുടർന്നുകൊണ്ടേ ഇരിക്കുന്നു.......പക്ഷെ തെരുവ് ഇപ്പോഴും ഇളിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു... തെരുവിന് അറിയാം അവിടെ ചമഞ്ഞാടിയ വേഷങ്ങളെ...... ഈ പുതിയ കാലത്തു വായിച്ചാലും ഈ തെരുവിലെ കഥ നിരർത്ഥകമായി തോന്നുകയില്ല

Every nuance of their dreams, every breath of their sighs, every drop of their tears, painted so painfully beautiful by Pottekkatt.

I lived and died on every single page and resurrected with the timeless beauty of this book.

ദേശങ്ങളുടെ കഥാകാരന്‍ 1940 കളിലെ കോഴിക്കോടന്‍ തെരുവിന്‍റെ കഥ വിവരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ യഥാര്‍ത്യങ്ങള്‍ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ ചലച്ചിത്രം പോലെ ഒഴുകി നീങ്ങി. ആ കാല്‍ഘട്ടത്തിലെ ജീവിത രീതിയും, കാപട്യങ്ങളും, തെരുവിലെ അരാജകത്വവും, നന്മകളും , യുദ്ധത്തിന്‍റെ കെടുതികളും എല്ലാം മായാത്ത ചിത്രം കണക്കെ ഇന്നും ഓര്‍മയിലുണ്ട്.

This is also one of the most tragic and difficult books to read. The book narrates the premature death of each of the characters in a most difficult way. It was really difficult to go ahead and complete this book on account of above factors.

The novel which is written in such a humorous language that makes you heartbreak at the end for sure. The only book which made me into tears. Such a tragic ending. The language and the character names which the author uses is really a local type which we will really enjoy. As same as the title name, the story goes around a local Street and relating to the daily lives of the people in that streets. Their jokes, enjoyments, job, love, food, family, everything the author is picturizing beautifully. And we will also live as a character throughout the story. Still I can remember characters 'Radha and Omanji'. Will put in the must read books.

കേരളസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി നേടിയ കൃതിയാണ് ഒരു തെരുവിൻ്റെ കഥ. കോഴിക്കോട് മിഠായിതെരുവാണ് ഇതിലെ തെരുവ്. പക്ഷേ കാലം ഇതല്ല എന്നേയുള്ളൂ. തെരുവിന്റെ കള്ളത്തരങ്ങളും സന്തോഷങ്ങളും വേദനകളും പട്ടിണിയും കാമവും നിസ്സഹായാവസ്ഥയും അതുപോലെതന്നെ ഇതിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആ തെരുവിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കഥയാണിത്. ആ തെരുവിലെ ഓരോ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടേയും ജീവിതം ഇതിൽ പറഞ്ഞു പോകുന്നു. വായനക്കും തെരുവിലെ ഒരു കാഴ്ചക്കാരനായി നമ്മളും ഒപ്പം നടക്കുന്നു. കൗശലങ്ങളോടെ പത്രം വിൽക്കുന്ന കുറുപ്പ്, സുധാകരൻ മുതലാളി, രാധ, കണ്ണ് കാണാത്ത മുരുകൻ, ലക്ഷ്മിയേട്ടത്തി, ഓമഞ്ചി, മാലതി തുടങ്ങിയ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും അവരെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങളും നിറഞ്ഞതാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. പഴയ കാലഘട്ടത്തിനെ അനുസ്മരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു എഴുത്ത്.

The story has so many subplots and characters that could have been integrated and utilised better to create something very epic, like in the novel Lonesome Dove. SK falls short in that. However, his poignant and alluring writing style more than compensates for this and makes this book a very worthwhile read.

ഒരു മുഖ്യ കഥാപാത്രം എന്ന് പറയാൻ ആരും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും വായനക്കാരന്റെ മുൻപിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. അവയിൽ ഒരുവനാണ് കൃഷ്ണ കുറുപ്പ്. പത്രം വിറ്റുകിട്ടുന്ന അല്പം കാശുകൊണ്ട് വീട് പുലർത്തുന്നു. ഒന്നാം ഭാര്യയിൽ ജനിച്ച അച്ഛന്റെ വാത്സല്യഭാജനമായ ഒരു മകളുണ്ട്, രാധ. തന്ടെ പൂന്തോട്ടത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന കൊച്ചു സുന്ദരി: അവളുടെ കഥയാണ് വായനക്കാരിൽ ഏറ്റവും കദനം ഉയർത്തുന്നത്. മറ്റൊരു മുഖ്യകഥാപാത്രം എന്നു പറയാവുന്നവനാണ് ഓമഞ്ചി. ലാസർ സാർ എന്ന് കൂടി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒറ്റയാനായ ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതരം മനുഷ്യൻ. നാനാതരം പച്ചിലകൾ പെറുക്കി വേവിച്ചു ഭക്ഷിക്കുക, ഞാറാഴ്ച തോറും മുറവിടത്തെ എണ്ണ തേച്ചു കുളിക്കുക, ദൂരക്കുഴൽ വെച്ച് കുളത്തിൽ കുളിക്കാനെത്തുന്ന സ്ത്രീകളെ നോക്കി രസിക്കുക, മാസത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ "വ്യായാമത്തിനു" (വേശ്യ വേഴ്ചക്ക്) പോവുക, അതിന്ടെ ചെലവ് കൃത്യമായി എഴുതിവെക്കുക എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഓമഞ്ചിക്ക് പല പ്രത്യേക സ്വഭാവങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അയാൾക്കും പൂന്തോട്ടം ഒരു കമ്പമാണ്. രാധയും ഓമഞ്ചിയും തമ്മിൽ അടുക്കുവാനും അത് ഉപകരിക്കുന്നു.
