Leaving Green Island

Rate this book
More than simply a modern love story, Leaving Green Island is a poignant yet lighthearted tale of friendship, family, and the search for a place to belong in the complex world of today's twenty-something women.

With a new job at a prestigious Chicago law firm and an engagement ring on her finger, everything seems to be falling into place for Brecken Pereira these days. However, all this perfection quickly unravels when Reed Whalen, Brecken’s first love, unexpectedly resurfaces. Despite the years that have passed since Brecken and Reed met as teenagers on exclusive Green Island in northern Michigan, Brecken has never been able to fully escape her lingering heartache over the unresolved end of their relationship.

After Reed's return, Brecken is torn between her longing for the past and the world she has carefully built for herself since Reed vanished from her life years before. Her relatable and complex relationships with her two best friends provide the backbone that supports Brecken, both as the life she knows quickly dissolves around her and as she struggles to pick up the pieces.

{This book contains underage drinking and a bit of explicit language and sexual content.}

Bios are so tough...! Let's see, I grew up outside Detroit and then went to college and grad school at the University of Michigan. After almost six years in Chicago (which I loved), I just relocated back to the Detroit-area. I'm very excited about the move back home, especially when this is such an innovative and unique time period for Detroit!

I just finished my second book, The Almosts, which is the companion novel to Leaving Green Island. I'm very excited about the January 2014 release of this book and look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on the story.

Big fan of fountain Cokes and hoodies.

I dont know what to say about this book. I finished reading it two days ago and I’ve been itching to come on here and tell you guys all about it but each time I try to put my words down I delete what I write. Nothing seems to come even close to what I thought of it. Writer’s block I suppose! Three words seem to come close – I loved it! Impeccably written, such detail I felt like I was there on Green Island with the characters. The way it jumped from past and present had just enough of each to keep me interested but not disappointed when we leave the current day to go back to the past. I was there with every emotion, the writing is really good (I know I’ve said it already but worth a mention again) not one sentence did I read and think huh?! and have to read it again.

This is definitely a book I’ll read again and again, an author to watch. I’m excited to see what comes next… a sequel maybe? This is my book of the month.

Just finished a FREE Kindle book that I downloaded two years ago and finally got to. I believe the author has only written three books, but has received a great response over this book. It was a very real richly detailed story covering a loyal friendship of dynamic women from their teenage years to late twenties, and reminded me of the best kinds of chick-lit writing like Judy Blume's "Summer Sisters" and Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed." Thoroughly enjoyed it!

5 stars not because I found it "amazing", but because I just LOVED this book! It was a Kindle Free & one of the best I ever read! Awesome writing, loved the way the author started in the present & went back in years to cover everything.. loved the characters, especially Brecken.. just a great feel good read! Some may find it a bit predictable, but I really didn't.. look forward to starting the sequel "The Almosts" next!

I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked from the beginning. I loved how the author told the story by bouncing back and forth from past to present. I thought this was a wonderful story of strong friendships and a beautiful connection in young love. I enjoyed reading how Brecken grew up to be a strong woman considering all of the challenges she's faced. Looking forward to reading The Almosts.

The story is told in first person by Brecken, who is my favorite character in the book! She is a very hard working young lawyer in Chicago, not happy with her job or her inappropriate boss, yet she is stuck and can't afford to quit. She's got a great boyfriend, an active social life and she plays in a band. She's got two great roommates, one of which is her high school best friend, the other she met in college. I loved, and even envied their friendship. Brecken's character was relatable to me in so many ways.

The Author takes you down memory lane only giving you bits and pieces over a 10 year span, somewhat revealing Reed Whalen, Brecken's first love and the-one-that-got-away. To me, this made the book so enjoyable, leaving you wondering what happened, unanswered questions making this a book hard to put down to reveal the answers. Reed is gorgeous, with a gorgeous personality to match. He is sexy, witty and charming, which is a perfect combination. He is also somewhat mysterious, which intrigued me. Before you know it, your heart is in your throat, and you are experiencing every emotion along with Reed and Brecken. I loved their story from the start, and it left me rooting for them all the way.

This book transplanted me back to the late 1990’s; I absolutely loved the pop culture references! It brought back some great memories leaving me somewhat nostalgic. Barrett’s debut novel is described as a great Chick-Lit summer read, which it definitely is! Leaving Green Island makes me want to go to Green Island and never leave! If you enjoy Emily Giffin or Jennifer Weiner, then add Em Barret to your list!
P.S. - There will be a sequel..... Which I am definitely going to read!

This was a book that took me a bit by surprise. I got really involved in the story pretty early in the book. The characters were likable and the story had a good flow.

I think my favorite part of the book was seeing the past scenes. I loved reading about how Reed and Brecken fell in love. It also made me a bit nostalgic about where I grew up and my high school love.

There are a few things I would have like to have seen in more detail. Such as, the event that caused them to break up and I also would have loved to have seen their trip to Europe. I did like the current scenes too, but the past scenes really stood out for me.

There's not a whole lot I can really say in the review without ruining the story. In a nutshell, this is a story about first loves, heartbreak, and second chances. This is an adult book, so there is some sexual content, but it's not graphic. If you are a fan of women's fiction, I'd definitely recommend this one.

Call it "chick lit" or whatever you want - I don't care...this book is amazing. It's a clever and witty romantic story that any woman from 18 to 75 can relate to - the age old conflict of first love vs. new love. The story includes genuine characters with "real life" issues that will pull you in. Em Barrett's voice is similar to Jodi Picoult's or Jennifer Weiner's, but with her own unique twist, ultra-modern with just the right amount of drama. "Leaving Green Island" will be your new favorite "beach read".

This was such a fun read! TS Isaac was blowing outside my window, but I was happily vacationing in Northern Michigan. The characters were real, rational and likeable; the story wasn't too deep, but it kept me engaged from the first page to the last. A great summer read (even it was pouring outside)!

Loved this book, can't believe that more people have not rated it. I loved this author's writing style. Loved the characters, loved the way it ended. Would read more from this author...Glad that this book had a conclusion to it and because of that along with loving the book, will read any other books in this series.

Leaving Green Island is the story of a woman who, over the years, has acquired a nice life for herself. Brecken works as a junior associate at a law firm in Chicago, has the love of a man named Will, has two of the best friends anyone could ask for (who are also her roommates) and puts her talents as a violinist to good use as a member of the band Ishmael. Things seem to be going smoothly in this young woman’s life until she’s hit with a blast from the past that leaves her wanting to seek out her first love in search of unanswered questions.
Throughout the story (told from Brecken’s point of view – in the first person) we are transported from present day 2009 to the summer of 1999 and 2000. In the beginning of the novel, Brecken is shocked when she learns that her long lost love, Reed Whalen, is back in the area. Having heard nothing from him in eight years, not even a good-bye when he dropped off the face of the earth and broke her heart, Brecken is a little unsure how to process this information. A part of her desperately wants to see him, to have him answer her questions and give her some closure so she can move on with her life with Will. But the other part of her knows that if she does see Reed that it will open up the feelings she’s pushed deep down inside of her, and all that’s going to lead to is more heartbreak. Her logical side wins over her heart’s desire and she decides to put Reed out of her mind. By the end of Part 1 of this book, Brecken and Will (her longtime boyfriend) are engaged. Part 2 of this book takes us back to the summer of 1999 when Brecken’s best friend, Lizzy, asks her to accompany her and her family on their vacation to Green Island for the summer. Brecken, wanting to escape her family’s drama and recent heartbreak, talks her parents’ into letting her go. We spend the summer with Brecken and Lizzy as teenagers enjoying the lavish lifestyle that is the Green: bonfire beach parties, underage drinking, and lazy summer days. This is the summer Brecken meets Reed and although they only have the one night together before Brecken’s departure (just spent talking and getting to know one another) it is a significant night that she holds dearly to her heart. The rest of the novel revolves around Brecken actually running into Reed on the street (in present day 2009), dealing with that and the emotions she felt when it happened, then jumping back to the summer of 2000 when they fell in love and became an item, and coming back to present day 2009 where Brecken agrees to meet with Reed (per his request) and Brecken finally gets her long awaited questions answered, leaving her more confused than ever.
When I first started reading this novel I was immediately drawn towards this Reed character and instantly wanted to know more about him and his story. So the first half of the novel kind of lacked my interest a little bit because Reed was barely in it, but I did enjoy learning about Brecken and following her life as she coped with her resurfaced feelings for Reed. I absolutely loved the flash backs to her summers on Green Island. For me it kind of felt like watching an episode of Gossip Girl where all of the teenagers are left to themselves to indulge in whatever activities they choose to do. It’s that ritzy lifestyle that I have never known or personally experienced, so it was cool to have been in Brecken’s shoes as she joined that world. I also enjoyed all the references to stuff from the 90’s and early 2000’s that brought back some of my own memories (ex: Dylan and Brandon from 90210, Sex and the City, and Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall—sigh). My other favorite parts of the novel included any scene with Reed. I can’t really pinpoint one particular thing that I liked most about him, but he just seemed to be the total package: he oozes sex appeal, is ridiculously charming, has a sweet and sensitive side but also this dark and quiet side that just brought him to life and made him seem like an actual real person. I swear every time I saw his name appear on the page I got excited and couldn’t wait to read what was going to happen. I just wish he appeared more throughout the story than he did, but that’s the hopeless romantic in me. I appreciate how the author kept things real and not over the top. All of the characters in this novel were well written and I really liked all of them, except for Brecken’s boss Stan. That man got what was coming to him and I’m so happy with how Brecken handled herself with that whole scenario. All in all this was a well written book with loveable characters, fun dialogue (especially Brecken’s little side notes here and there) and a great story that ended the way I hoped it would.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a wonderful contemporary romance that I really enjoyed.

Brecken Pereira is a wonderful character. She is an Associate in a law firm, and engaged to a doctor. I liked her very much, but wanted to shake her every so often, because she made some questionable decisions. She has some wonderful friends and roommates that keep her grounded, but the sudden return of an ex has her completely confused.

Reed Whalen is a jerk! Sorry, but that's my opinion. He may be gorgeous, rich and charming, and have an excuse for his terrible behaviour, but still, if I was Brecken, I don't think I would have been as forgiving. However, he does have a few redeeming qualities.

This is a book that I would not normally have picked up if I had seen it on the bookshelf in a store; not that I've got anything against the cover, or even the blurb for that matter. However, when the author offered me the chance to read this book, I thought it would be a nice change from my usual choice of paranormal romances. I'm glad I took the chance, because this story was a delight to read. The story is told from Brecken's point of view and has several flash backs to her teen's, when she spent two magical summers on Green Island, with her best friend Lizzy.
This is not only a romance, but a story of friendship. I loved seeing Brecken and Lizzy's friendship blossom and grow. They are both lucky to still be friends into adulthood. Not many friendships survive beyond school, but these two are more like sisters than friends. I also liked the dynamics between Brecken and her other friends too, especially her other roommate, Nevada, who comes across as a bit ditzy at times, but she is actually very shrewd and insightful.
However, it is the relationship between Brecken and Reed that intrigued me. I was a little disappointed not to get to know Reed a little more. He was certainly enigmatic as a teenager, which added to his charm, but I wanted to get to know the older version better. Sadly, this was not to be. However, the author did a fantastic job in bringing their story, and all the characters to life. The only problem is that I cannot relate to this book as others may do. I was not exactly the most popular child, nor the most social party animal (and I'm still not), so I never really had a "first love" experience as such. Sad, but true. Nevertheless, I felt for Brecken when her heart was broken. The end of the story left me feeling very happy.

Em Barrett has written a heart-warming coming of age tale full of romance, love and friendship that touched me deeply. I loved her writing style which, although not as fast paced as some books I have read in the past, flowed wonderfully from scene to scene. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I don't think it will be the last.

I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to the mention of underage drinking and smoking, as well as some bad language and scenes of a sexual nature (not explicit). I do, however, recommend this book if you love Chick Lit or contemporary romances. - Lynn Worton

Leaving Green Island was a breath of fresh air. It would probably be the perfect summer read but I'd read it at any time. It was well written with the beautiful Green Island and Chicago settings. Since I'm from the Chicago area myself, I felt this book was written for me. There were so many cities, bars, radio stations, high school names, streets and other details included from the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs that I relate to. I used to listen to 104.3 oldies when I was young. New Trier High School was a rival school of the one I attended. I had visited many of the bars like the Cubby Bear and have many of those elite restaurants on my "to go to one day" list.

The whole book made me feel like I wasn't just reading it but part of the story. The descriptions, especially of Green Island, took me to vacation with them. I could imagine how wonderful it would be to vacation on such an exclusive island and have such a relaxing, lazy summer. Reed was the perfect mysterious, attractive guy and Brecken had such a good head on her shoulders overall. It was great to see the whole story come into light with the flashbacks and they were placed in the perfect spots of the book. I'd loved seeing how Reed and Brecken met, fell in love and even some details of their love maturing.

It was sad to see the two of them spend so much time apart but second chance love is a beautiful thing and you could tell that she would just be settling with anyone else. Loved the Epilogue and how it left a lot open. Excited to read the companion book as well and appreciate the sneak peek. I'm definitely going to a watch on what Em Barrett writes next and thank her for such an enjoyable story.

I wanted to give this book 5 stars....I wanted it so much I could taste it. I snuggled in after the first couple of chapters ready to be blown away with a great romance with enough angst, romance, and tenderness to make missing the presidential debate worth it. Except, it never really happened. It came oh so close though, I could literally taste it. It's almost like it was right there but never went to the place it should have. Sound convoluted? Well to make a long story short, the romance between Reed and Brecken was simply not explored enough for me to have any real attachment to what should happen to them at the end. I could see it getting started when they met each other that second summer but it never delved into it. How can I have an investment in what happens in their relationship if I never actually get to see what their relationship was really about? The good times and bad. The sweet and tender times. They times they fought. How they shared with each other. We need that and unfortunately it wasn't explored in this novel enough for me to have any particular attachment to what happens at the end. It just needed......... more......

I hear there is a sequel in the works and I'm just wondering how that could be....the end of the novel was wrapped up pretty nicely and while I was happy with the ending overall I was just left wantin and not in a good way that would warrant a sequel.

LOVED IT! Leaving Green Island is not your typical NA book but it managed to, eventually, captivate me.

Images are a must for this one so here's my Brecken:

and here's my Reed:

What stood out most in this novel was the undeniable connection between Brecken and Reed. I mean they both had eyes only for each other and the author did a very good job passing this to the reader. The only negative thing i have to say about this book is that it was slow-paced, especially at the beginning. I managed to get hooked during Brecken's first flashback. I thought that the book had a severe lack of dialogue again especially at the beginning and that's a shame because i was really tempted to not finish it. I'm glad i gave it a try though because the storyline is incredible and so much different that what i'm used to reading.

Leavin Green Island is a solid 4 star for me and i definitely recommend it!

I have to start by saying that I have been pleasantly surprised by this book. For some wired reason I expected a story set in a white picket fence suburb environment, very early 50's style ambiance. While still on the 'burbs it is very much a contemporary plot with very likable and relatable characters, who manage to deal with life's issues head-on but without unnecessary dwelling nor drama.
The love story plot takes place throughout a number of years with Green Island as yet another character. Green Island I would consider similar to Star Island near Miami, Fl. This love story keeps the reader intrigued and anxious to continue reading in order to learn how the characters deal with whatever barriers they might perceive is in their way.

I have to say I loved, loved this book, have recommended it to many of my friends. And all ready
at 75% into "The Almosts" sequel to Leaving Green Island.

Thank You Ms. Barrett.

Awesome! Em Barrett is a natural storyteller with a keen understanding of life, love, friendship, and the magnetic pull of the past. Leaving Green Island drew me in with its subtle humor and fluid prose, and it wasn't long before I was hooked reading about Brecken Pereira's unforgettable experiences as an outsider navigating the unfamiliar world of a wealthy vacation community and the confusion she later faces when her first love from Green (as the residents call it) comes crashing back into her life as a young lawyer and musician a decade later. Barrett's captivating plot, multi-dimensional characters, and well-placed references to the sights and sounds of the late `90s Midwest and present-day Chicago make Leaving Green Island an absolutely delightful read from start to finish. Five stars - you should definitely check it out this summer!

This book is amazing. I hope that everyone will read it, because it really is that good! The writing is perfection the characters are easy to love and the storyline is fantastic. It's so much fun to read a book that draws you in from the first page. This book covers 10+ years of life and love. Em Barrett, I hope you will be writing many more books. The ending to this book is perfect, although if you wanted to write another story with these characters you wouldn't get an argument from me! Since I am a Chicago girl at heart, born and raised in Illinois I loved this book probably even more than I normally would. Plus when there is a shout out to my Alma Mater (U of I!) I loved it more! I've ready A LOT of books this summer and this one is in my top 3. Thanks for writing such a great story! :)

Being from Chicago as well, I love reading books that bring in aspects of my city. Likewise, I loved all the references to the 80s and 90s.

Getting to the story itself, I loved it. I loved reading about the description of Green Island and of her times there. I felt these chapters in the book were the best and lived reading about everything that happened.

We would get glimpsed into the relationship ( maybe 2 pages about them in Europe), but really I needed more. I couldn't get as attached to them as I wanted to because I didn't have the emotional connection with them. I think if more of the story revolved around how they feel in love and that first year, this story easily would have received 5 stars from me.

I'd like to thank the author Ms. Em Barrett for this opportunity.
Leaving Green Island is a beautiful story of true love amidst time & distance. Brecken and Reed met and fell in love in Green Island when they were in high school. A tragic accident broke them apart. 8 years after, they met again but Brecken is already engaged! Ok i'll have to stop here. You have to read it to find out what happened next!
Ms. Barrett's writing is fluid and flawless. She built up her characters well, delving into their personalities. The scenes are so vivid! I can totally imagine Green Island with all the horse carriages, lush greeneries and the tranquility of the place. It's magical! After reading this, i kept on replaying the scenes. *sigh* I so love it!❤️❤️

What an amazing story. The book bounces back and forth a lot between the past and the present, and each time it happened I got annoyed. Not because it was a bad thing, but because when they were on the present and moved to the past I wanted to know what was going to happen next with what I had just been reading! Then I'd get so caught up in the past that when she bounced back to the present I got frustrated again - it flowed so smoothly together, the author did an amazing job putting this book together and telling the story. I hope to read more books written by Em Barrett soon.

I was initially intrigued by this story because I am a Michigander who has spent a lot of time in both Northern Michigan and Chicago. Em does a great job of describing the beauty of a summer night "up north" and captures the angst of the first crush, first love and first heartbreak. Brecken, the heroine is strong and successful, she has made a life for herself after her heartbreak but when Reed shows up she begins to question whether she has made as much progress in getting over her first love as she thinks. The story was beautifully written and I cannot wait for the follow-up.

I enjoyed this book. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt like there should have been more written about Reed and Brecken's relationship, both past and present. Instead we only got bits and pieces of it and I felt like most of the book was just filler. Imean, the first half, Reed basically doesn't even come into play at all. I liked the second half of the book much better because I feel like we finally get to the meat of the story.

That being said, the book was well written and kept me interested throughout. I would definitely recommend this book.

I did not want to leave Green Island. This was a wonderful read! It was a well thought out story that really made you feel that you were right there with Brecken. The story has a lot of reflections back to previous periods within the evolution of Brecken's life, and sometimes this style can be hard to follow, but in this instance it was done extremely well. I could not wait to see what would happen next and I would actually love to know what happens after the dedication page. Love it! Highly recommend.

I received this book for an honest review

It took me a while to get into the book but once I was I found myself falling in love with all of the characters. I loved the fact that Brecken never really got over Reed and that Reed never got over her. I absolutely loved Brecken's friend because they kept the story really interesting. I laughed and laughed some more while reading this and I loved the fact that we got to go back in time and she how things started between the two I look forward to reading the next installment in this story to see what happens with Lizzy and the mess that she is in

If this was a movie - it would be a chick-flick. I frankly liked it big time. After all the action adventures I have been reading, this was a breath of springtime. Loved the story, the pace, the romance, the storytelling. The story centers on Brecken growing up and her on and off relation with handsome Reed Whalen. It would be a good book even if I didn't need a break from my usual fare. I will probably check Ms Barrett's future offerings.

I love everything about this book.

There's not much more I can say. I started this book last night and reluctantly put it down close to midnight- only because I knew I had to be up at 5:30. I found some time to finish it this morning, and I am honestly sad that it's over. There are (rare) times I identify completely with not just a character, but the whole complex entity of the book, and this happens to be one of those times. Excellent writing :)

The book was really good. I totally felt connected with Brecken and Lizzie, and felt kindred spirit to Brecken in many ways. The characters were very relatable and, while I can't say the whole books speaks to my life experience, I definitely felt that some of the thought processes and reasoning Brecken was using were definitely sound logic for my mental processes too. Overall a gret book, and I can't wait to read Barrett's new book that came out earlier this year!
