I graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri (2009) with a BFA in Creative Writing and minors in music and film. I'm a five-time NaNoWriMo Participant, and one-time winner. I won Camp NaNoWriMo once in 2015 and twice in 2016.

I started writing stories when I came back from a showing of Little Women in 1994. I was nine years old, in love with books, and suddenly realized that I could write them, myself. I took pride in every writing project in school from there on. I still remember reading my stories to my class, and hearing that they liked them. It's a feeling that never gets old.

Stella Gainsbourg aka Agent Sally Golightly has lived two separate lives. One is that of a covert CIA agent facing danger and saving her country from terrorist threats. The other is that of a loving Aunt of her Sister Riley’s two little girls.

When Riley’s husband abandons her, Stella rushes to her sisters side. Despite years of keeping her personal and professional lives separate, her two worlds collide when a Russian Mob family comes looking for revenge and Stella’s two young nieces are kidnapped.

With her sister and her CIA partner David by her side Stella must face her past and try to save her family.

Sugar and Spies is the first novel for Rebekah Martin. This was intentionally written as the first in a series. I actually had a moment of “what the heck?” when the book was finished. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up. The second installment will be out later this year, I believe possibly October.

Rebekah Martin has a very pleasant writing style, it's very clean, linear easy to follow. While it didn’t grab me right away Sugar and Spies was a fun read that will have you rooting for both Stella and Riley until the very end. The character's are very likable and the story is well written and researched. While the boundaries of reality are pushed a little bit it only adds to the spirit of the story and the likability of the author.

One of my favorite scenes was when Riley steals a car, dons a gun and goes to hunt down her children and save her sister. It's totally what I would do. Well, it's what I would like to think I would do!

If you are looking for a light read with some great characters Sugar and Spies would be a great choice! Don't forget to look for the second installment in the series later this Fall.

Stella is a sweet girl. A wonderful aunt who dotes on her little niece. Also a butt-kicking secret agent.
However, kicking so many butts, someone is bound to kick back. And hard as Stella tries to keep her personal life separate, work is going to make an unwelcome intrusion...
For those who like to have a strong, female lead for a change, they will become a fan of Stella and will delight in the romantic tension between her and her partner, David.
Jumps straight into the action and the great pacing never lets up. We get a good feel for the characters without getting bogged down in descriptions, etc.
A little birdy tells me that she's going to make another appearance soon. I for one, am looking forward to it.

This was a cute, enjoyable story that passed the time well. Overall, I enjoyed the book and the characters and felt that it was a nice, fun, light read. The action scenes were written well and it did keep me wondering what was going to happen next. I assumed that it would end one way but was surprised that the writer took the ending in a different direction (no spoilers).

However, the book could have used a little more editing. There were several small typos, not nearly enough to take away from the story. Also, there were a few scenes that were confusing because certain details were left out. For example, Riley is sitting in a chair. Someone enters the room, says a few things and then takes Riley's chair and sits. But when did Riley get up? It wasn't anything that was so confusing that it kept me from wanting to read it but I did have to read a couple of things twice to make sure I hadn't missed something.

As I said, it was a good book and I did find myself looking forward to reading it. I gave it three stars because I read in order to be entertained and I felt that this book served its purpose.

Review: Sugar and Spies - Book #1 Spy Sisters - Rebekah Martin - December 2012

Sugar and Spies and all things nice make up these two stepsisters. Riley is now a SAHM who all her life has been working until recently in the local bakery department of the supermarket whereas Stella is working as a spy for the CIA. During their school years, Riley was always the peppy and popular one whereas Stella lurked in the back and kept to herself. Now Stella as found herself back at home as Riley's husband Brad was caught bonking Shannon - Riley's now ex-bff, to make matters worse Riley is due any day with Brad's second child. If that wasn't bad enough , Stella has for the past few years been on the run from the Russians and they have now discovered her full "real name". Is she jeopardizing her family's safety by coming home to support Riley ? What happens when chaos and trouble hits and you have one sister who is pregnant , hormonal and angry at all guys and the other who is a normally calm and collected spy but will do anything to protect the ones she loves ? Fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series will love this as Riley reminded me of Val and Stella of Stephanie.

Other than a few grammar errors, I thought it was a great story. I loved it. You could feel the emotion of your characters and the way you chose to end it leaves your craving more.

This book has potential. However, the story did not really begins until I am 50% through it. The first half of the book is all background story for Stella and her history leading up to the kidnapping of her nieces and the history between Riley, Brad, Stan and herself. Too much background information for a pretty short book tends to bore a reader out.

The book is actually quite well written and but unfortunately the characters does not appeals to me and the jokes doesn't make me laugh too. There are definitely lots of room for improvement.

Note: I have received the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun story of sisters who have gone their separate ways but come back together during a difficult time as only sisters can. It is a fine first edition to a series and a respectable first publication for new novelist Rebekah Martin. Looking forward to what lies ahead for the Spy Sisters as well as Ms Martin.
