Ilisha Morrison should have died the day she boarded the bullet train to Colorado. As her train collided with another, a handsome stranger saved her life, but put her in more danger than she ever imagined possible. Caught in a warring world of angels, demons, and a vengeful Death Maker who wants to destroy her, Ilisha discovers her true identity and that not everything is as it seems. Betrayal, heartache and two angels competing for her love forces Ilisha to make the hardest decision of her life.
Story telling seems to be a part of my DNA. Since childhood, I made up fantastical characters and brought them to life. Part of it was to escape the turmoils of childhood and some were just for fun. Sitting beside my couch is a constant stack of history, biographies, and compelling fiction, which means I have many overloaded bookshelves. Wouldn't that be great to have a room just full of shelves? I would love to see a wave of outstanding, self-published authors take over the market. I think it's important to own your work and take pride in it. Writing several novels and short stories, I know the trials of writing and rejection. Constructive criticism can only make you better. Never doubt yourself.
Other fun and fascinating facts about me are the fact that every year I look forward to Fall, which means football and Halloween. Pathetically, when June hits I start planning for Halloween. My dogs and bird are even forced to wear costumes. Football means don't call or Facebook me because the Browns are playing.
I love to go on adventures. Finding new images to photograph is a joy of mine. Photography is a passion coming only second to writing. I believe you can capture every moment of laughter, tears, and horror with a single click of the shutter.
I’m a huge animal lover. Having land would be a danger for me, because I would have all kinds of critters. One day I will own a pot-belly pig.
Favorite writers I can't list because the list is long, but here are a few: I love Shakespeare, Stephen King, Stephanie Meyer, Richelle Mead, Lauren Kate, JK Rowling, Dan Brown and Bram Stoker. I watch way to much of the History Channel and love Ghost Hunters and Being Human.
I have worked in health care, specifically at a children's hospital and EMT. Anything bloody and gory I'm there, but it’s all about helping people. That is a great feeling. I also have a degree in accounting, which I can't stand because you sit all day, but it made my mom happy. Love you mom.
Hmmm, what to say about this book, there is just so much... I never will go into typing what the synopsis of a book is, you can read it above.
The first about 60-ish% of this book I really loved, In fact so much that I didn't even comment to make notes for myself for a review. I just didn't want to stop reading long enough to do it. So the first part of this review is going to be on that. As is I borrowed this book and may have to buy a copy eventually, even with my mixed feelings, because it was worth the read.
General story thoughts: I enjoyed the lack of a love triangle and the play on guardian angels. The way the angels vs. fallen angels vs. demons works, is a nice different view. Same with the idea of the way heaven works. The progression of the relationship between the main and background characters and the story line flowed well together. Never did I have to say " Wait, how did I get here?" It never got too slow or too fast, just a nice steady pace. Very well written but, truth be told while the entire book reads like a YA novel, there are parts that most certainly are not YA and shift more towards adult romance type content. ( Yes it gets a bit dirty). Which leaves me a bit stumped about where it belongs in the genre scheme of things. It's like YA 18+, if that makes any sense at all.
Illisha: Illisha is a great character, I did enjoy her reactions and thought processes. She felt believable, even if she was a bit controlled in her reactions and sometimes moves forward without a backward thought, I can put myself in her shoes. She seems quick and intelligent and doesn't dwell on things excessively or seem weak or whiny, which is actually nice. My biggest issue with her is that at no point did you really get a direct answer to her age. Which I can attribute to this being a newer author, sometimes little things get missed, but it doesn't really take away from anything. My guess is that she is in her mid twenties, but can't be sure. Which is a bit frustrating, then again I may have been reading to fast and missed it so if I'm wrong please correct me.
Bram: Bram is fun to explore and figure out. Their connection was beautiful especially because it was just them. His secrets being slowly unraveled made him enjoyable, instead of frustrating like in some books where you finally want them to just get to the point. His devotion to Illisha is sweet instead of borderline creepy like in some books. His personality is quite refreshing. He doesn't fall into the typical male role of funny, goofy, trusting best friend type, or dark, mysterious, troubled soul type. He sort of encompasses both, which gives him much more depth.
Now on to the last 40 ish %..... It took about 10 pages for me to start to hate some characters and by 2 or 3 chapters hate everyone so much I wanted them all to die!
General story thoughts: Hello love triangle, I was wondering if you would eventually rear your unfortunate ugly little head in this book, I was truly hoping not since I am so deeply sick of you!
We went from nice and comfortable to "Wait, what the hell? Are you serious? I don't quite understand... But I know I don't like this" so fast your head wanted to spin. I get speeding up while reaching a climax, but that is when all the characters are established and known for the most part. You don't just throw someone new in, rename characters ( or at it is properly name them), and completely flip the whole damn world upside down on us and then just keep speeding along, like nothing is wrong. On the other hand I never saw it coming which is such a relief! If you read through my comments on most books I tend to call all the major twists chapters before they happen... Well no problem with that here, I was so blindsided I felt like I was hit by a MAC truck. This book definitely throws you for a loop and then some! So if you like surprises this is the book for you. That being said I still wish it wasn't so, because honestly everything has changed so much I wonder what the point was to the first half of the book. It's hard to hate that which you once loved, and that's the problem with these truths revealed.
All in all it was a hell of a ride and even with my hatred of certain characters, or really all of them, I will continue to read their story, because this writer has a beautiful knack for surprising the hell out of you, and going places you never expect! I fully intend to read any and all other books by her in the hopes that they keep me on my toes like this one did. Finally I have finished my book of a review on a book! Thanks for reading it!
A woman named Ilisha boards a bullet train on her way to her grandmother's funeral. Her train collides with another and she is saved by a stranger, Bram, who happens to be her (totally-obsessed-and-in-love-with-her) guardian angel. Turns out he shouldn't have messed with her fate since the rest of the book has Ilisha running from a demon wanting to collect the bounty on her head. Oh, and there's another angel that has already laid claim to Ilisha, and he is none too pleased with Bram. What's a girl to do?
I liked this book, but it does have its issues: 1. A proper editor would be really helpful - misspellings and grammar errors abound. It was distracting. 2. The story tends to jump from one event/time/location to the next with no break between paragraphs. I found it to be jarring and it took me out of the story. 3. So. Much. Sex. Ilisha and those angels must have been really horny. "Hey, you're hot." *bonkbonkbonk* "You have an awesome smile." *bonkbonkbonk* "Did you just sneeze?" *bonkbonkbonk* "......" *bonkbonkbonk* 4. Nothing seems to faze Ilisha. Almost got killed in a horrible train wreck? No problem. Angels and demons do exist? Okey-dokey. A nasty demon wants to kill you? Whatever.
At one point 'Ilisha the Unfazed' decides to go for a jog, completely alone in a forest, knowing there's a freakin' demon waiting for his chance to kill her. Seriously, WTH.
Overall, I did like the book despite the annoyances and are-you-kidding-me moments. I'm willing to give the sequel, Wilted Wings, a shot. Please let the editing be better.
I received a free copy of Broken Butterflies from the author in exchange for an honest review.
When I read the synopsis I was rather pleased, I thought I had received something a bit different from the norm. I thought the idea that everyone has a guardian angel and that they could turn into butterflies was definitely a new take.
Unfortunately for me that was all I liked about this book. All the way through, no matter what happened and how terrible things got, Ilisha wasn't fazed by anything, not the death of her grandma, not the train wreck she was in on the way home for the funeral nor finding out about Angels.
When she does find out its like water of a ducks back. Finding out that Bram has lied to her and tricked her into believing he's her soulmate, that she's being stalked by a Death Maker, that she's really married to Damon and she used to be an Angel, I still got nothing from her. She's just so blasé about everything. And the fact that this all took place within a short period of time was also rather far-fetched.
When Damon tells her the whole truth about who and what she is, she still doesn't get upset. When he tells her she can become a full Angel again just by drinking his blood, she takes a second to think about it and then does it.
It doesn't take long for her to sleep with Bram when she meets him and she thinks she's in love with him until she meets Damon and then realises that she's in love with him instead. She gets angry for a few minutes when she realises what Bram did and when she's told demons are trying to kill her and then she's fine. Again.
I really did want to like this book but found that instead of not wanting to put it down, I just wanted it to end.
Angels seem to be a topic that many people are really getting into reading about in the paranormal genre. Of course with angels comes their counterpart, demons. This book is full of both of them, but the primary focus is a love triangle of two angels and a human. Ilisha thought she was simply getting on train to go help her mother with her grandmother's funeral, but life has a funny way of not working the way we expect. When the train she is on crashes and she somehow survives, she finds that everything she once knew has changed. She discovers a world where everyone has a guardian angel, but those angels can abandon you if you don't live up to their standards. Her angel has been deeply in love with her her entire existence and knows exactly what to say to win her heart. You would expect that from someone that has watched you your entire life. Being that she had never met Bram, her guardian, before, she had no idea what lies he might be telling her or what information he simply was leaving out. Her world turns even more crazy when Damon, another angel shows up to lay his claim on her. While trying to sort out her feelings for these two gorgeous men, she finds that a people are out to kill her. How can life get any more complicated? Well, it does. You'll have to read just to see exactly how crazy it really gets. I liked this story. I like some of Shadow Stephens's other books more, but she is a wonderful author and worth following.
Lisa's review of Broken Butterflies By Shadow Stephens
I was given a copy of Broken Butterflies by Shadow Stephens in exchange for an honest review. I first got to know Shadow when I read her first book Legion of Bats and fell in love with her writing. When I heard she had another book coming out I was sure it was going to be the second book to that series. But it was s new book entirely different from that one. Let me tell you I absolutely 100% loved this book more than I could ever say. I finished the whole book in hour. Not because it was short but because I couldn't put it down even if there was a fire I wad not stopping. Ilisha finds out that her life isn't as she knew it to be. She meets Brahm in a freak accident on a train where he saves her. But by saving her he may very well be condemning her because there was a death contract on her. Brahm and Ilishia fall into a world wind love affair. He promises to always protect her and she finds that she has never been made to feel this loved and cherished or has she. Along comes Damon who turns her world upside down and she is forced to find out what she truly is and who is her destiny and past. This is a fabulous story about angels and the good and bad in all of us when we let jealousy and dishonesty take over our better judgement. I highly recommend Broken Butterflies and also her debut novel Legion of Bats. Thank you very much Shadow for enriching all of us with your wonderful writing.
My review of Broken Butterflies by Shadow Stephens
Rating 4****
This book was provided free from tye author in exchange for honest literary review. Book on the Bright Side Spotlight author.
Ilisha's life was turned upside down on the way to her grandmother's funeral. Victim of a deadly train crash, she walks away unscathed after a stranger stepped in to change her fate. Bram was her savior who seemed to have all the right words when she found herself lost. Unfortunately Bram wasn't what he appeared to be. In fact, saving her was the worst thing that could have happened in her life. Cheating death denied Ilisha the destiny she was meant to have since the beginning of time. Bram's actions have left left running from a vicious demon who is intent on collecting her for the bounty placed on her. There is nowhere for her to hide. Bram is also carrying around his share of secrets. While he professes his love he neglects to mention that she may not be his to have. Her heart has always been destined for someone else. I liked this book. Intersting paranormal story apart from the usual. Ilisha does blossom as the story goes on seeming to find her inner warrior and becoming more decisive. Nice sophmore effort from this author. I thought the butterfly symbolism was pretty interesting as well, just to throw that in!
Broken Butterflies is the first book in the same titled series by Shadow Stephens. I'm a huge fan of her work, and have read everything she's written. In the PNR world she's brilliant and brings the stories to life. She is, at the time of this post, currently touring the second book in the series. Be sure to keep a look out for the review in a few days.
This story introduces us to Ilisha Morrison who at first appears as an ordinary human, facing the death of her grandmother. On her trip home for the funeral, she meets Bram her Guardian Angel. From here her whole world gets turned upside down in a flurry of love, revenge, and deceit.
Characters:
I loved them all, even those who probably didn't deserve it. They're real in a sense that they love, fear, and cry like us, but at the same time the intensity is on par with greatness.
World:
This took place on Earth which is quite easy to replicate in the sense of believability. However, since Angels are considered paranormal, I found their abilities and hierarchy well explained and implemented.
Overall thoughts:
Shadow Stephens writes for adults, but her messages are pure. This series is suitable for adults, due to a heft amount of sexual scenes (very tastefully written). I'd recommend Broken Butterflies to anyone who loves Angelic PNR.
I recently read Broken Butterflies by Shadow Stephens. I was not quite sure about this as I began. I love the symbolism of the butterflies. The romantic twist were not something I had figured out right away. My heart is always up for a good romance. Brahm and Damon both pose to be interesting characters.
Illisha beat fate , that day she survived on the train. She is very strangely connected to the man who saved her and is left with so many questions. She trust him almost instantly. Is this man the one she is meant to love? Good question because Shadow does a great job of putting all kinds of twist in when it comes to the romance department for this young woman. From the train to regular life Illisha finds herself in a tangled mess. A war between angels, a death maker out to get her life and a love triangle. Ilesha has lost so much does she have the strength to see this story through? You'll have to read it to find out.
Several twist, a good plot, Broken Butterflies is an enjoyable paranormal read.
disclosure: I received a Free copy of Broken Butterflies in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading Broken Butterflies. But as I got further into the story and the action kicked in from the start, it was hard to put the book (well Kindle) down.
Shadow has created an amazing story involving guardian angels, butterflies and demons.
An awful accident happens when Ilisha is on her way home for her grandmother's funeral. Right before the accident, a beautiful stranger approches and asks her a simple yet powerful question: "Do you trust me?" Ilisha's life is never the same after that she learns more about life and a life she has forgotten.
I love the start of this amazing series. It has so much promise of action, love and plot changes that it's addicting. Now onto Wilted Wings!
In many ways this book is good - great book cover, interesting premise, and I really liked the little twist in the storyline halfway through.
However, by the end of the book, I find that the reader is left with a few too many untold secrets. Maybe, if more were revealed, I would not (against my better judgment) feel so sympathetic and charitable towards the enemy. One question which popped up frequently in my mind :
I liked the beginning of this novel quite a lot but from about the middle on, it got much more violent than I care for. Basically, it was a book about warring angels and demons. The book's protagonist, Ilisha, was very appealing and the plot moved along at a nice clip. However, the excessive amount of violence was distasteful to me. Also, there were numerous editing mistakes, which were of course distracting.
Interesting book. It was a very different take on the angel/fallen angel/demon thing. I don't like giving out spoilers or doing a summary of the book in reviews. But basically, this book is about a woman, a fallen angel, another angel, and some demons. It is a very clean book, suitable for ages 13+, I would think. I would recommend reading this book.
I received a copy of this book from "Promotional Book Tours" in exchange for an honest review. Fantasy, mystery, and a different aspect on demons and angels. Do our guardian angels always have our best interest at heart? Find out if Ilishas' guardian angel saved her life or led her to danger. It kept my interest from page one and finished it within a day. I would recommend this book.
Really loved this book! The only thing I thought was "again?" after the 4th adult scene lol... not against them when they are tastefully done, and Shadow did them tastefully, but after a while I was like, "really? again? they just did it!" lol that is the ONLY hang up I had about this book... LOVED the story!
I really liked this new take on guardian angels, demons and fate. Sometimes what's seem right is wrong and looks can be very deceiving. I read this book in one sitting. It's the perfect story about good vs evil. You will be riveted by Ilisha's story.
Compelling story, competently written, very poorly proofed/edited. As this is her very first publication I won't nit pick. The story has a fast pace and kept me engaged.
This book reminded me too much of Stephens first book Legions of Bats for me. And honestly there was WAY too much adult content for me to be comfortable to recommend to anyone.
