"Isolation" by Michelle Birbeck starts out as a fun little camping trip to the sea with a group of good friends. A twice a year ritual of spending the night sitting around a campfire, getting drunk and talking, cut off from all civilisation for miles. But then the story changes into something more dark and sinister as the reader along with the characters discover the first body and what at first seems like a tragic accident pretty fast makes way to the realization that either they are not as alone as they think, or that one of them is out to kill the others in their little group.
I am the first to admit that I am a huge wuss and that horror is NOT my thing, but still I found myself compelled to not only start this little tale of blood, fright and the fight to survive but Michelle Birbeck's word left me no choice but to keep reading and to feel what the characters felt, from the absolute devastation when their first friend dies to the slow dread of realizing it was not an accident to finally the all out fight for survival against an enemy they don't know.
Isolation has all the elements of classic horror, actually it has so many of them that it could very well be written off as a walking, talking genre cliche but only a fool would dare to do so after reading this short little tale because it is anything but a cliche.
Michelle Birbeck's writing is compelling and just draws you in, even if you are like me not a fan of the horror genre and run screaming at just the mention of anything to do with it I suggest you give this a chance, if you don't mind a little bit of gore. You won't regret it.

This story suspends through suspicion who is behind the unusual events taking place in a post-college group of friends' semi-annual camping trip. Unsettling when the people you think you know well are not all as they seem.
