Lilly Vale is just an average girl, living in a tiny apartment in a rundown complex with her beloved Grandmamma. Although they often struggle get by, Lilly is blessed with the unconditional love of her grandmother and lives a happy, yet uneventful, life. For all the love and happiness she has during her waking hours, she is plagued by blood drenched nightmares almost every night. When her Grandmamma succumbs to a senseless act of violence, Lily is uprooted and must begin life again in a place she has never been, Paradise End, living with her uncle who is little more than a stranger. In Paradise End, Lilly unexpectedly becomes the most popular girl in school, and the coveted trophy girlfriend of the most desirable guy in town, Cayn. As happy as she is, it seems impossible for Lilly to escape her nightmares, nor the memory of the friend she left behind in Jude. Lilly cannot stop thinking there is more to her new group of friends and her shady boyfriend. Secrets of her mother’s death encircle her and everyone seems to know more than her. Will Lilly ever discover the secrets of Paradise End? Will the truth set her free or condemn her to the realm of her nightmares?
Rebecca Nolan has crafted an intriguing character in Lilly Vale and delivers an impressive read in “Death Lilly”, her debut novel. While I generally do not read the Young Adult genre, I found this story to immersive and the characters entrancing. Lilly’s naivety often gets her into trouble, but it is her brains and heart that gets her out of it. Like the rest of us, Lilly has to figure out life as it comes. This realism makes Lilly a character to care about, to root for, and hurt with. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel “Blood Lilly”. Lilly Vale is certainly no shrinking violet and I will certainly be buying Ms. Nolan’s next novel.
