TL DR: experience-driven, backed by science, insights and tools to build greater security in school settings. Modular sections in the book so the reader can jump to whatever tools are needed to be safer in classroom the very next day. A must-have resource for educators and administrators.

An excellent resource for educators to build not only functional skills to make school environments safer from violence but also develop a deeper understanding of the underlying roots of violence. Kevin Secours puts a realistic and unapologetic spotlight on just how difficult it is to deal with violence in a school setting. There are no magic-wands or secret techniques waiting within the pages of this book to ensure safety for the educator and students. Throughout the book are sobering facts and realities about violence that reveal how difficult it can be for a teacher faced with a violent situation. Yet, the lack of sugar coating and magical thinking creates an understanding of the real threats and sets the stage for the reader to know how best to apply the many techniques and skill sets described in the book. The modular design of the book allows a reader to randomly choose nearly any portion of the book and start applying the lessons of that portion in their day-to-day practice as an educator. The book is an excellent blend of application and science. Most importantly, the author does not selectively pick science to fit his preferred techniques or advice, but instead identifies theoretical concepts and explains how those concepts drive sound approaches and skill building to optimize safety. Readers of popular self-defense and violence-prevention literature should take note that Mr Secours’ application of science in this manner is the exception and makes his book an especially valuable contribution. Any amount of reading, consideration of the content, and application of the lessons will inevitably bring some measure of increased safety not only to the individual educator but to their school as a whole.
